Indieweb Summit 2019 Thoughts

        "html": "<p><img src=\"https://aperture-proxy.p3k.io/3e8863cb681e905c7d0fdb13a9641462b6b27015/68747470733a2f2f696e6469657765622e6f72672f746869732d7765656b2f696d616765732f323031392d30372d30352f623663323536363236653133373638323465653162353162383065356338323462353565666261332e6a7067\" alt=\"Day 1 Pic\" /></p>\n\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"https://aaronparecki.com/\">Aaron Parecki</a>, the <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/Schedule\">Indieweb Summit 2019 videos have been posted to the Internet Archive</a> which includes the day 1 keynotes, intros and sessions and the day 2 sessions and <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/Demos\">demos</a>.</p>\n\n<p>I really enjoyed the teamwork of the <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/indiewebfutures\">Possible Futures</a> session as we broke out into 4 groups and our group had the opportunity to discuss surveillance capitalism.  I also enjoyed talking with <a href=\"https://upon2020.com/blog\">Johannes Ernst</a> about the latest plans for <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/UBOSbox\">UBOSbox</a>.  I also attended the <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/alltheauth\">AutoAuth</a> session but private posts, although important, don\u2019t seem like a natural fit with Indieweb building blocks to me.  I could be wrong.  After day 1, some of us attended <a href=\"https://datnight.org/\">Dat night</a> which was great.</p>\n\n<p>There were a lot of good day 2 <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/Demos\">demos</a>.  Displaying a live list of sites you subscribe to with your reader which was done by <a href=\"https://cleverdevil.io/\">Jonathan Lacour</a> looked great.  For my demo, I made this site available on the Dat network which you can access with Beaker browser at <em>dat://herestomwiththeweather.com</em>.  I have installed a <a href=\"https://docs.datproject.org/docs/dat-server\">Dat service</a> on my rackspace server which will keep a copy of my site on the Dat network:</p>\n\n<pre><code>$ dat store dat://b8ffbddeac2c7eec8b60f1d33774f515f47affe4bef0ad6fec15bc0c6cb1ad78\n</code></pre>\n\n\n<p>Indieweb Summit seemed even better organized this year and I mentioned some of what I considered improvements at Austin Homebrew Website Club this week for consideration at the next IndiewebCamp Austin.</p>",

Reflections on IndieWeb Summit 2019 pt 1

        "text": "I had a wonderful time at @IndieWebSummit last weekend.\u00a0 Meant to write up some thoughts on the event sooner, but I\u2019ve been enjoying some time away from my computer this week.\nThat said, I\u2019d like to note some highlights.\nJune 28: Pre-summit social\nThis was my third IndieWeb summit in as many years, and over the past year I\u2019ve gotten to know several people in IndieWeb\u2019s community by chatting on IRC, working together on software (mostly on GitHub), and long conversations on Skype.\u00a0 So, whereas my first IndieWeb was marked by a lot of introductions, this year felt like getting to see old friends.\u00a0 Not too much to say about the pre-summit social, except that it drove home the value of IndieWeb\u2019s community. Behind IndieWeb\u2019s specs and technical building blocks are some really interesting people committed to building a positive space.\n\u00a0\nJune 29: Talks and unconference sessions\nToday began with explanations of IndieWeb\u2019s code of conduct, as well as Mozilla\u2019s community participation guidelines since the summit took place at Mozilla\u2019s Portland office.\nWe then moved on to a series of excellent keynotes. The keynotes stuck with me, so I\u2019ll spend a bit of time with them.\u00a0 Below are some summaries on parts that stood out to me, and in some cases tangents where they led to me to related trains of thought:\n\u00a0Tantek \u00c7elik \u2014 State of the IndieWeb\nTantek ran through a number of accomplishments and changes from the past year. Specifically, Facebook severely restricted its API,\u00a0 preventing tools like Bridgy from automatically syndicating between one\u2019s personal website and Facebook account. And WordPress (the CMS running this very blog) continues to present numerous challenges.\u00a0 I\u2019m of the opinion that it\u2019s worth investing time to improve the IndieWeb experience on WordPress.\u00a0 And I think we\u2019ve made big leaps forward in the past year. A lot of people have contributed to WordPress\u2019s IndieWeb ecosystem, and particularly appreciation is warranted to David Shanske and Matthias Pfefferle.\n\n\u00a0Kitt Hodsden \u2014 On Contractions & Expansions\nKitt\u2019s keynote was a beautiful and captivating oration about contractions and expansions through life, and how these connect to our online lives. I don\u2019t think I can do it justice in a summary, but here\u2019s an excerpt and it\u2019s well worth checking out the full talk:\n\nWhen we own our own data, We can look back at who we were who we thought we were. We can see who we really were, who we are, and, most importantly, the trend of our becoming who we want to become. Since there are so many ways to do different things with IndieWeb tools, I found it really useful to learn by Marty\u2019s example.\n\n\n\u00a0Jacky Alcin\u00e9 \u2014 Making the IndieWeb for All\nJacky engaged squarely with what I think is one of the most urgent questions for any sort of decentralized web: How do we make this accessible for everyone? It\u2019s common for a bunch of like-minded people to build something they find useful for themselves, but which struggles to meet the needs of people with different backgrounds. Lots of meet in this talk, and well worth watching. One thing that stood out to me was Jacky\u2019s recommendation for \u201cmore anthropocentric (less tech knowledge) demos.\u201d Marty\u2019s mobile demonstration right before this was a great example, and Jacky spent part of the summit working a page on his site describing how he interacts with the IndieWeb.\n\nThis struck a nerve with me based on some reading I\u2019ve been doing lately about activity theory. Specifically, Kaptelinin and Nardi use an example of driving lessons to describe learning processes from an activity theory lens:\nFor instance, when new drivers start learning to drive a car in a specially equipped training car, they may appear responsible for the driving (since they carry out basic operations such as pressing pedals and turning the steering wheel). But much of the driving may in fact be done by the instructor, who sets the direction, monitors the overall situation, and makes most decisions. With time, the learner can assume responsibility for more and more tasks and eventually develop the ability to drive on his own.\nMy first attempt to Indiewebify my site was aided by a rich technical infrastructure. Since I run WordPress I could easily install a variety of plugins and a theme that took care of many of the technical details. And I could verify that things were working using IndieWebify.me. However, it took me some time to understand how to use my website\u2019s newfound powers. In other words, it was like getting in a fully loaded new car, but not having a sense of how to make decisions with it. Where should I go? Which lane should I take? etc.\u00a0 IndieWeb\u2019s wiki is full of examples, and many people have written blog posts, but this sometimes led to too much information.\u00a0 Peronsal demonstrations (here\u2019s how *I* do it, here\u2019s what *I* would do) are really useful for helping people learn to make decisions.         "html": "I had a wonderful time at @IndieWebSummit last weekend.\u00a0 Meant to write up some thoughts on the event sooner, but I\u2019ve been enjoying some <a href=\"https://jackjamieson.net/15937-2/\">time away from my computer</a> this week.\n<p>That said, I\u2019d like to note some highlights.</p>\n<h2>June 28: Pre-summit social</h2>\n<p>This was my third IndieWeb summit in as many years, and over the past year I\u2019ve gotten to know several people in IndieWeb\u2019s community by chatting on IRC, working together on software (mostly on GitHub), and long conversations on Skype.\u00a0 So, whereas my first IndieWeb was marked by a lot of introductions, this year felt like getting to see old friends.\u00a0 Not too much to say about the pre-summit social, except that it drove home the value of IndieWeb\u2019s community. Behind IndieWeb\u2019s specs and technical building blocks are some really interesting people committed to building a positive space.</p>\n<p>\u00a0</p>\n<h2>June 29: Talks and unconference sessions</h2>\n<p>Today began with explanations of <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/code-of-conduct\">IndieWeb\u2019s code of conduct</a>, as well as <a href=\"https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/governance/policies/participation/\">Mozilla\u2019s community participation guidelines</a> since the summit took place at <a href=\"https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/contact/spaces/portland/\">Mozilla\u2019s Portland office</a>.</p>\n<p>We then moved on to a series of excellent <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/Schedule#Keynotes\">keynotes</a>. The keynotes stuck with me, so I\u2019ll spend a bit of time with them.\u00a0 Below are some summaries on parts that stood out to me, and in some cases tangents where they led to me to related trains of thought:</p>\n<ol><li>\u00a0Tantek \u00c7elik \u2014 <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/state-of-the-indieweb\">State of the IndieWeb</a>\n<ul><li>Tantek ran through a number of accomplishments and changes from the past year. Specifically, Facebook severely restricted its API,\u00a0 preventing tools like Bridgy from automatically syndicating between one\u2019s personal website and Facebook account. And WordPress (the CMS running this very blog) continues to present numerous challenges.\u00a0 I\u2019m of the opinion that it\u2019s worth investing time to improve the IndieWeb experience on WordPress.\u00a0 And I think we\u2019ve made big leaps forward in the past year. A lot of people have contributed to WordPress\u2019s IndieWeb ecosystem, and particularly appreciation is warranted to <a href=\"https://david.shanske.com\">David Shanske</a> and <a href=\"https://notiz.blog/\">Matthias Pfefferle</a>.</li>\n</ul></li>\n<li>\u00a0Kitt Hodsden \u2014 <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2019/on-contractions-and-expansions\">On Contractions &amp; Expansions</a>\n<ul><li>Kitt\u2019s keynote was a beautiful and captivating oration about contractions and expansions through life, and how these connect to our online lives. I don\u2019t think I can do it justice in a summary, but here\u2019s an excerpt and it\u2019s well worth checking out the <a href=\"https://kitt.hodsden.org/talks/indieweb_summit_2019_keynote\">full talk</a>:<br /><blockquote>\n<p>When we own our own data, We can look back at who we were who we thought we were.
