I was already partway there, but following on Ryan Barrett’s excellent suggestion, I spent a few minutes today and added several of my favorite Twitter lists to my feed reader. I spend less and less time in Twitter because all the notifications come to me via my own site and webmentions. I’m not unfollowing people to completely clean out the timeline just yet since there are a few people who have private accounts and I’d need to refollow or do something unique to cover them.

I do wish someone had a simple method of following the one or two people who have blocked me (I’m presuming they did so accidentally or I’ve been rolled up in a larger block list and they weren’t aware.) I was half-hoping that some API and list workarounds would work, but I’m stuck with creating another account and following separately or manually revisiting their feeds at scheduled intervals. I don’t need to interact with them so much as I have to read their excellent work. If anyone has ideas to fix this, I’m open to suggestions.

Later today, Jared Pereirah will be interviewing me about my website BoffoSocko.com as part of his course Learning with Personal Websites within the Hyperlink Academy.

Join us this afternoon on a live stream at 3PM EST / 12PM PST to chat and ask questions about my website, how I use it as a digital commonplace book, and the IndieWeb movement.

My website is closing in on 17,000 posts (this one will make it 16,998), so I was looking at the gargantuan size of my database. When you’ve got this many posts and 17,160 comments, I’m thinking that just my Akismet (anti-spam) meta data is somehow actually larger in size than some people’s  entire blogs. I’ve backed it all up and am going through and cleaning out some unused digital exhaust to give me some room to grow.

Who knew that in owning your own data you could accumulate so much of it?!

I thought I had done it ages ago, but gRegor Morrill’s post reminded me and upon checking I realized that I hadn’t made the update. So tonight I’ve added my pronouns to my profile card on my website.

I remember grabbing an identity button at a recent fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. That night I think I talked about 10 others into wearing them after emphasizing the importance of helping to normalize proper pronoun use.

Sonia Solin; Chris Aldrich; Kerry Ayazi; Spencer Kook at the Planned Parenthood Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley fundraiser in 2019. Sonia and Spencer are wearing their pronoun buttons; I haven’t gotten to Kerry before we took the photo.

Like gRegor said so well:

This removes any ambiguity and helps normalize the practice of sharing our pronouns. Not everyone uses pronouns that match the gender they present as and some people use non-gendered pronouns. If only those people shared their pronouns, it would make them feel “other.”

For those having issues with Kinja this week, know that IndieWeb.org may have some useful ideas and solutions for the possible site-death.
There are lots of ideas for back up at https://indieweb.org/archival_copy, including Ben Welsh’s savemy.news which will help you to quickly archive your pages.

I’ve been seemingly “away” from my online presence for several months, but felt it’s time to come back to posting publicly a bit more frequently. Some of the hiatus has been set aside for crafting some new workflows for posting more content privately for a slightly different version of my commonplace book.

While I’ve learned a lot in my experiment, I’ll have to ruminate on it a bit longer before writing any specific takeaways. One of my favorite portions has been some work to pull more data out of the books I’m reading in terms of highlights, notes, and marginalia for research purposes.

In general, not much has changed here directly, but I will have to get used to the the posting interface and some of my old workflows again. I’ll also need to get around to some general updates and fixes that I’ve let slide for far too long. I’ll also have to catch up on some change logs for things that have improved since my hiatus began.

I will say that while I’ve been very productive during my hiatus, which has included stepping away significantly from other forms of social media consumption as well, I also very much miss interacting with a lot of my online friends and colleagues on a more regular basis. It’ll be good to ease back into my feed reader and see what everyone has been up to for the past several months.

Lol, not surprised. Most of the biggest push for new technologies comes from “malicious” actors. infoq.com/news/2019/10/W… (v2.jacky.wtf/post/6913e51e-…)
Can't I just follow you in a single place? Maybe just your website? (BTW, it's possible to turn your WordPress site into a Federated/Mastodon-like instance using Activity Streams. wordpress.org/plugins/activi… boffosocko.com/2019/11/14/557…
Facebook has a soft spot for white nationalists. Like very spot.
WOW: @facebook has just decided that this ad that we bought to run on their platform aimed at Facebook employees somehow does not meet their ad standards. Wonder why?
