At a minimum its presence poses questions for anyone unfamiliar with it. Why is it so damaged? How did that happen? Why has it not been repaired or rebuilt? All of which inevitably serve as a reminder of WWII. Perhaps it helps discourage a return to the horrors of war.

I’m almost done with my Star Trek TNG rewatch; I’m on the penultimate S7 ep.
Every time Star Trek does an espionage ep it is cringe-worthy. It goes all the way back to when Kirk stole the cloaking device from the Romulans. I’m on S2 of DS9, too. Trek can’t do spies at all.
