I just learned something new today. The word "boogey" as in "boogey woogie" has a west African etymology. Just like the banjo and everything else American music.....#literacies

Jordan, known as the "King of the JukeBox" helped to invent jump jazz and bring Black music traditions of the South and make them front in center in Hollywood and out west.
Jump Jive kept the 2/4 beat with the piano as the lead. Carl Hogan, the tympany guitar player though laid down riffs that would lead to the guitar replacing the piano as lead in R&B and Rock and Roll.

Bob Willis took the influence of Bessie Smith and Emmit Tiller and gave rise to the Country Swing that would mix with Texas/Chcago Blues and jump blues to become rock and roll.
We can hear this evolution in his rendition of Ida Red.
Ida Red was an American folk song with no known origin. Willis recorded it in 1938 using the 2/4 Dance beat common in jazz and blues.
The same beat that traces its roots in slave fields and back to West Africa.

I wish more of the free software community gave a level of the same shits that Apple did about their environments. I think the only one that seems to is ElementaryOS. I’ve been trying it out and I think that I might end up moving away from KDE/Plasma towards it.

Ruby geek talk:
I'm increasingly plumbing the depths of ActiveSupport looking for things that will give @bridgetownrb a leg up, and I'm realizing that so much of what I love about Rails (and even Ruby) I owe to ActiveSupport in particular.

Funny thing I am so legit proud of the student for his cunning and activisim. I told Fox News when a reporter emailed me that the class was about networking and political activism.
I let them know how proud I was of the student for getting me to consent to record "to help him study" and then turn it into fuel for an online harrassment attack (he didn't really know what would happen) ..which I called "political activism."
Same time I am proud. I want political activism no matter student beliefs....within reason. Trump crosses the Racism and rape culture lines. I have no problem respecting my students right to be wrong if they believe otherwise.
Luckily the story didn't get national steam. Fox never ran it. Maybe because I believe in my students. Wanting to get involved in governmentand politics is great.
Still I think my pride watered down hopes for a juicy story. No national news story. Just a few weeks of internet trolls pinging every where I lived online and flooding inboxes with nonsense.
I didn't make much hay. Didn't have tenure at the time...but now I kinda think it belongs in the file. Research or Teaching?
