Morning @scsu cooking up a Little Miles Davis this morning as I start providing feedback on student work: youtube.com/watch?v=4VIkQ6… (quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/s/17mP4y)

It’s Friday so here’s my check-in!

  • I consult in software with/via https://black.af (and I’m open to new leads so definitely reach out!). It’s been okay but a bit slow given the state of the world.
  • I got a PinePhone recently and I’m experimenting with different applications to work on for it. Right now, that’s mainly ActivityDesk - think Pidgin for social networks! It’s written in Rust and Qt so if anyone knows of a SSB port of Rust or wants to help me work on it, let me know!
  • I’m currently experimenting with ideas around collecting payments for apps I work on so people can directly support me or foundations. I’ve seen a few things like Paypal links and the likes but I am curious how much further we can push with. With the very real advent of mobile Linux being accessible to people (for $200 USD!), I think more user abstractions should be made.

What’s up with you?

YES RAIN DADDY BRING IT RAIN ALL OVER DIRTY PORTLAND
For what it’s worth, I’m a white evangelical who believes that systemic racism is real, every single person has a right to high quality free health care, that trans women are women, and that our President and his party are a cancer. So, it’s not hopeless, but that ratio is tough.
White evangelicals don’t seem to have much of a grasp on their own savior’s teaching. Do better.

Nonreligious voters were 30% of the electorate in 2018. They're also overwhelmingly likely to vote for Democratic candidates. Yet they mostly get ignored by the party. ...
The first four eps of Woke are worth the slog to ep 5
THE air in Portland is only “unhealthy” instead of hazardous and the sun is no longer red!!!! There are even SHADOWS. Shadows! (Okay the shadows are orange but they do exist now)
Testing to see if I can post on my website, use Brid.gy publish, and not @ mention @schnarfed. (boffosocko.com/?p=55777062)
All hail sovereign immunity
A nugget buried in this piece: The City Attorney's Office is requesting an additional $210,000 this fall to cover the salary of an additional attorney to help the city ...

Has anyone managed to properly seal their devkit version of the PineTime? I’m interested in taking it on more real world situations (health tracking, sleep monitoring, etc) and my toy Rust apps can only go so far.

Meeting author @ainissaramirez tonight @QuarantineBook and look forward to listen to narrate her new book The Alchemy of Us about materials science (I checked it out from @LAPublicLibrary)

This is TONIGHT. I can’t wait to chat with you. Let’s get together virtually. twitter.com/QuarantineBook…
Okay this is extremely good. Nice work @powells.

Rest aggressively during eternal Caturday.

I do not understand how you can call yourself pro-small business and entrepreneurship and think the US system of health care is better than single payer.
Big Sur is very pretty and Safari is an improvement. My complaint is items on the menu bar are hard to see and not very accessible.
I’m downloading Big Sur while watching Tour de France stage 14. First time, I’ve beta tested a macOS. No @ malarkey involved.
