"text": "An article from The Guardian that\u2019s been sitting in my backlog for a while (it was published back in January, 2021), Eleanor Morgan discusses \u201cLost touch: how a year without hugs affects our mental health\u201c. It\u2019s not a particularly long read, but does have some good links to research and other information about the impact not having enough human contact in your life can have.\n\n\n\nAs adults, we may not comprehend the importance of touch even when it disappears. \u201cWe might begin to realise that something is missing, but we won\u2019t always know that it\u2019s touch,\u201d says Prof Francis McGlone, a neuroscientist based at Liverpool John Moores University and a leader in the field of affective touch. \u201cBut when we talk about the problem of loneliness, we often ignore the obvious: what lonely people aren\u2019t getting is touch.\u201d\n\n\n\nCertainly strikes true to me.\n\n\n\n\u201cTouch is a modulator that can temper the effects of stress and pain, physical and emotional. We have seen in our research that a lack of touch is associated with greater anxiety,\u201d says [Dr. Katerina] Fotopoulou. \u201cIn times of high stress \u2013 the loss of a job, or a bereavement, for example \u2013 having more touch from others helps us cope better, particularly in calming\u00a0the effects of [the stress hormone] cortisol.\u201d Even if we\u2019re used to not being touched a lot, after a while the need can feel very physical \u2013 sometimes described as \u201cskin hunger\u201d or \u201ctouch hunger\u201d.\n\n\n\nI also thought it was interesting to hear about CTs \u2013 nerves we have that are keyed for gentle contact:\n\n\n\nThe\u00a0two square metres of skin that contain us are teeming with nerve fibres that recognise temperature, texture and itch, etc. One set of fibres exists purely to register gentle, stroking touch: the\u00a0C tactile afferents (CTs). I'm sitting in my hotel room eating this müsli with yogurt and strawberries thinking "wow these strawberries sure don't have much flavor" ...and then it hit me...
I opened up Thursday's leftovers of extremely pungent lentil salad with blue cheese and it doesn't smell like anything either.
The only thing I can smell is the hand sanitizer which frankly was way too smelly before, that and a hint of coffee.
