"text": "Over at Vox, Allie Volpe has a piece talking about a perennial topic for me: \u201cIf you want to belong, find a third place\u201c. Third spaces and their role in fostering a sense of connection and community I feel is pretty well understood at this point, yet despite the clear value for people (and the community), these sorts of spaces are constantly defunded and deprioritized. The way things are economically, there is a real sense that if you\u2019re not maximizing your profitability (reduce lingering, high customer rotation), you\u2019re not going to make it. (It\u2019s not an entirely unreasonable assumption, unfortunately.) Further, even public spaces (or semi-public \u2014 plaza courtyards, malls, et cetera) are set up to actively discourage spending time in them, and then get defunded when people stop using them precisely because the space has become hostile to humans.\n\n\n\nIt\u2019s all a bit maddening. But the article isn\u2019t all doom and gloom, and points out a number of actions people are taking to identify, use, and encourage third places. "text": "I guess it was in early 2019 when Google announced they would be breaking thousands of development and test environments by making the \".dev\" domain a thing (archive link to announcement).\nFour years later they sold their entire Google Domains operation to Squarespace (archived).\nAnd, yeah, I have two of these \".dev\" domains registered and so this has now become my problem. And remains my problem! Here's the timeline so far.\nApril 1, 2024 - I receive my first \"<domain> is now available in your Squarespace Domains account\" email. I grudgingly sign in and confirm that this is real. I decide to wait until all (2) of my domains are in their system to do anything about it.\n April 23, 2024 - 22 days later I received the second and final \"is now available in your Squarespace Domains account\" email.\n May 9, 2024, I'm guessing 7pm-ish EDT - I start the process of migrating both domains to another registrar. The new registrar helps walk me through the process of unlocking the domain at Squarespace and requesting the required transfer code. To my annoyance, Squarespace informs me that they may take up to 24 hours to send the transfer code.\n May 9, 2024, 11:15pm EDT - Squarespace sends the transfer codes.\n \n May 10, 2024, 12pm-ish EDT - I enter the codes at the new registrar and pay for the transfer. About 15 minutes later, the new registrar lists the transfer as \"Awaiting release from previous registrar.\" According to discussions I found in searching, this usually means there is a button to push on the old registrar's dashboard to approve the transfer. Going through an emotional rough patch earlier this week, and then (in an unconnected happenstance) watching Gran Turismo (I’d missed seeing the movie when it first came out in theaters), it started to dawn on me how much I’ve begun to value my “offline identity” relative to my “online identity”. Online, I talk about all the things I pontificate about on social media, blogs, podcasts, etc., and I write lots of code. Offline, I walk/cycle/scoot ( #micromobility has become very important to me!), meet new people, enjoy live music, and engage in a variety of activities with my #family in and around #Portland.
Somehow, the “juice” I get out of life is trending in that direction: IRL. The reason Gran Turismo got me musing on this is because prior to this year, I’d never thought of myself as an “athlete”…never thought of myself as a “fitness buff”.
I think that’s changing. And for this once-chubby nerd, it’s super weird! 😅 But super fun.
