        "text": "Transitions is (finally) almost done. There\u2019s just a couple of little tweaks left to do (like, super duper minor things, decibel-level adjustments and slight timing tweaks and a little bit of vocal tuning). It\u2019ll be really nice to finally have this album done after all this time. The oldest song on this was first recorded in 2001! And my first attempt at making an album of this stuff was back in 2003! This album is legally old enough to drink in the United States.\n\nI\u2019ll probably stick to my original preorder release date of November 20, 2024, as that\u2019s Trans Day of Remembrance. Deadnames has also been done and ready to release for a while, and it will also be coming out on whatever day Transitions comes out.\n\nThese are the release dates for Bandcamp and itch and such; streaming will come later, as a proper streaming release has a two-week lead time. So it\u2019ll probably be November 29 for those platforms. (Streaming users can wait, anyway. Anyone who\u2019s following me closely knows to buy my music, right? Right.)\n\nI\u2019ve also written some fun visualizer code which will be used to put a full-album video on my YouTube channel. Audio visualizers are super annoying and awkward on every code platform I know of these days, so I just went to Get It Done by modifying Wavemaker, a tool built by my friend John. Someday I want to build a better framework for this stuff but Good Enough is good enough.",

Making a webfinger request to well.com for the mentioned user returned a 500 Internal Server Error so a WebFinger::BadRequest exception was thrown.  What was going on?</p>\n\n<p>Fortunately, <a href=\"https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-webfinger/issues/28\">an issue in the activitypub-webfinger</a> had the answer:</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p>Looks like some are using this host-meta redirect to use a custom domain for actors which is different to the actual domain of the server.</p>\n</blockquote>\n\n<p>And that is what was happening:</p>\n\n<pre><code>curl https://mastodon.well.com/.well-known/host-meta\n&lt;?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?&gt;\n&lt;XRD xmlns=\"http://docs.oasis-open.org/ns/xri/xrd-1.0\"&gt;\n  &lt;Link rel=\"lrdd\" template=\"https://mastodon.well.com/.well-known/webfinger?resource={uri}\"/&gt;\n&lt;/XRD&gt;\n</code></pre>\n\n\n<p>A response in the issue notes</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n  <p>The use of host-meta as a \u201csecond layer of indirection\u201d is something that mostly a holdover from the OStatus days, IIRC. Most projects that aren\u2019t Mastodon or Pleroma will not check host-meta at all, and will instead always skip straight to the /.well-known/webfinger endpoint. I don\u2019t think it makes sense to unnecessarily pressure everyone into adopting host-meta or supporting variable LRDD endpoints</p>\n</blockquote>\n\n<p>I can\u2019t argue with that so I just <a href=\"https://github.com/herestomwiththeweather/irwin/commit/10a8d622e022bc48521afd11e63fb3962fce71f4\">handled the exception without setting the custom domain</a>.</p>",
        "text": "Today, a post in my feed included a mention and its webfinger verification threw a WebFinger::BadRequest exception:\n\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  WebFinger::BadRequest (Bad Request):\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM \nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  app/models/account.rb:79:in `fetch_and_create_mastodon_account'\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  app/models/account.rb:367:in `block in create_status!'\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  app/models/account.rb:364:in `each'\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  app/models/account.rb:364:in `create_status!'\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  app/lib/activity_pub/activity/create.rb:20:in `perform'\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  app/controllers/accounts_controller.rb:148:in `process_item'\nNov 08 09:18:49 AM  app/controllers/accounts_controller.rb:75:in `inbox'\n\n\nThe activitypub actor document resided on mastodon.well.com but when a reverse discovery was performed, the hostname of the subject in the webfinger response was well.com instead of mastodon.well.com.  Making a webfinger request to well.com for the mentioned user returned a 500 Internal Server Error so a WebFinger::BadRequest exception was thrown.  What was going on?\n\nFortunately, an issue in the activitypub-webfinger had the answer:\n\n\n  Looks like some are using this host-meta redirect to use a custom domain for actors which is different to the actual domain of the server.\n\n\nAnd that is what was happening:\n\ncurl https://mastodon.well.com/.well-known/host-meta\n<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?>\n<XRD xmlns=\"http://docs.oasis-open.org/ns/xri/xrd-1.0\">\n  <Link rel=\"lrdd\" template=\"https://mastodon.well.com/.well-known/webfinger?resource={uri}\"/>\n</XRD>\n\n\n\nA response in the issue notes\n\n\n  The use of host-meta as a \u201csecond layer of indirection\u201d is something that mostly a holdover from the OStatus days, IIRC. Most projects that aren\u2019t Mastodon or Pleroma will not check host-meta at all, and will instead always skip straight to the /.well-known/webfinger endpoint. I don\u2019t think it makes sense to unnecessarily pressure everyone into adopting host-meta or supporting variable LRDD endpoints\n\n\nI can\u2019t argue with that so I just handled the exception without setting the custom domain."
