        "text": "After having eaten a bunch of wet food last night and having had three doses of antibiotics, Fiona\u2019s getting back to her usual cuddly/climby self. She isn\u2019t sneezing anymore, and while she\u2019s still a bit congested she snuggled up with me in bed this morning, and right now she\u2019s being super snuggly and affectionate. She\u2019s also purring super loudly, which she hasn\u2019t done in a while.\n\nI still haven\u2019t heard from the vet about her bloodwork or x-rays but I feel like there\u2019s a lot less to worry about now.",

It feels ludicrous to yet one more time offer thoughts and prayers, talk about what a terrible tragedy this is, wave hands up in the air about how teenagers shouldn\u2019t have access to guns, etc., etc.</p>\n\n<p>All I can say is, this <strong>Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Statistic</strong> should be on air 24/7. It should be shoved in politicians\u2019 faces. It should be plastered all over telephone polls in all the major cities. This, <em>this</em> is the America we\u2019re asking our children (the ones who survive) to inherit.         "text": "This week I finished up a fun and challenging screen printing class at the Gowanus Print Lab!\nTucked away in the giant maze of brick buildings that is Brooklyn's Industry City, Gowanus Print lab is a small space, mightily equipped for paper and fabric screen printing projects.\nOur instructor (and the proprietor) Todd took me and three other students through four 3-hour sessions: a hands-on instruction session introducing the basics of screen printing on apparel, an open apparel-printing lab where we could bring our own project of up to about 30 pieces, an instruction session on two-color paper printing (featuring our own designs), and a final do-what-you-want lab with the option to do a single-screen apparel run or up to three screens for a paper project.\nI consider myself a person with little in the way of art skills, so with three opportunities to design basically whatever I wanted, I struggled a lot with anxiety and trying to push various software to turn half-imagined ideas into simple designs. I also had an \"A-student mentality\" kick in, driving me to maximize each session, which led to way more angst about deciding what to make than necessary. \ud83e\udee0\n\n  Anyway, here are some photos of my finished projects!\n\n\n    Eternal Caturday shirt featuring a spiral of Lolly cats surrounding a large image of her making big owl eyes. It's a lot of steps, but they're all about using careful prep to make things easier when it's time to start pulling the squeegee and churning out prints.\n\n  In terms of moving forward, I'd say the biggest thing I need to work on is a design practice - regularly pushing my skills with design software techniques. I'm in a bit of a negative cycle of having vague ideas combined with not enough skills to quickly sketch them out. I learned some new techniques in Inkscape (soo good for layout!) and the GIMP (newsprint filter and color managment!) but need to challenge myself to improve.\n\nThat said, I also need, uh, facilities?? A home setup feels pretty far out of reach given limited space and the potential for mess. I have a couple of places to try (textile arts center and Manhattan Graphics Center (when they're done moving to Brooklyn lol) and look forward to posting future projects if and when I try it out.\nA fun thing that I feel is solved is where to get stuff (particularly, apparel) to print on! I\u2019d already resolved to boycott Amazon, and at this point I don\u2019t feel too good supporting Shopify either (though that\u2019s different in that many independent online retailers use Shopify for their e-commerce websites).</p>\n\n<p>But when I talk about going radically local, I don\u2019t mean just going to a local store even if they\u2019re a Big Box retailer. I mean buying things <em>made</em> locally. Right here in <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/portland\">#Portland</a>.</p>\n\n<p>Every day I carry my iPad and other gear in a backpack made locally. (So local in fact, I can walk to the manufacturer/storefront from my house in 5 minutes. \ud83d\ude02) And that\u2019s just the beginning. My next clothing purchase will be locally-made. Delays and SSGs, Oh My

        "text": "Apologies for the delay between posts \u2014 it\u2019s not for lack of topics or interest, just a matter of time and energy. I\u2019ve been spending time trying out different static site generators for a potential move off WordPress (at least for some projects), and that\u2019s been eating into what spoons I have spare for writing. At this point I\u2019ve been fiddling mostly with 11ty and Astro, and while I\u2019m not 100% happy with either of them, it\u2019s been a worthwhile learning experience regardless. I may also end up taking a stab at Hugo, but we\u2019ll see. The main issues I have mostly boil down to opinion \u2014 every framework is opinionated to one degree or another regarding how to structure things, how to format things, and so on, and I don\u2019t agree with those opinions all the time. Then it becomes a matter of how hard it is to override those defaults to work more how I want to work.\n\n\n\nFor instance, a lot of these frameworks/generators feel that any images you include should be optimized, and when optimizing, the file paths should become arbitrary hashes. I don\u2019t mind the optimizing part, but I fuckin\u2019 hate when the filename gets mangled into a hash like that. You\u2019d think that\u2019d be a matter of just passing a parameter as part of the image processor config, but in several of these frameworks, you\u2019d be wrong. At least in 11ty I found some instructions in their docs to override things, but in Astro I was just out of luck, unless I wanted to store my images separately in the \u201cpublic\u201d folder.\n\n\n\nAnother recurring gripe I have is that the default markup is just markdown. Frequently either GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) or CommonMark. These are fine as far as markdown goes, but they\u2019re kind of limiting when you want to do anything more nuanced than basic formatting. Even things as common as changing the alignment for an image don\u2019t have a generally agreed process. Then it becomes a matter of how hard it is to override those defaults to work more how I want to work.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, a lot of these frameworks/generators feel that any images you include should be optimized, and when optimizing, the file paths should become arbitrary hashes. I don\u2019t mind the optimizing part, but I fuckin\u2019 <em>hate</em> when the filename gets mangled into a hash like that. You\u2019d think that\u2019d be a matter of just passing a parameter as part of the image processor config, but in several of these frameworks, you\u2019d be wrong. At least in 11ty I found some instructions in their docs to override things, but in Astro I was just out of luck, unless I wanted to store my images separately in the \u201cpublic\u201d folder.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another recurring gripe I have is that the default markup is just markdown. The story genuinely sounded interesting, and Aaron-Taylor Johnson is a beautiful, beautiful man.</p>\n\n<p>So I headed out to my local movie theater and watched <em>Kraven the Hunter</em>.</p>\n\n<p>Is this a great film? No. Is it an extraordinary <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/scifi\">#scifi</a> superhero romp? Also no. Is it fun &amp; entertaining if you\u2019re ready to simply switch your brain off and enjoy the ride for a couple hours? <strong>Very much so!</strong></p>\n\n<p>I had a good time with it, and I think it <em>could</em> have been an excellent movie in the hands of more competent filmmakers. The action was quite exciting, and I liked all the <em>actors</em>.         "text": "I\u2019ve been procrastinating about posting which means tabs have been accumulating. \ud83d\ude41\nWe got a new, overpowered-for-home-use 3D printer, the Bambu Labs X1C. With the fancy Automated Material Switcher (AMS) that must be powered by forbidden magics.\nAfter setting it up and letting it run through its literal shake-out calibration, I printed these things and was really impressed with the results!\nThe classic benchy boat. This was actually included in the memory of the machine, but I\u2019m linking to what looks like the version on Bambu\u2019s MakerWorld.\nThese print-in-place fold-flat phone/tablet stands which I believe was suggested by the Bambu mobile app that I used to set up the printer. I started my 3D printing journey with a MakerBot Cupcake CNC kit back in ~2009 so print-in-place mechanical stuff still feels magical to me when it works. These came out nice and sturdy!\nCraving more print-in-place, this articulated axolotl is pretty cute and moved well straight off the printer, despite what I would describe as \u201cflimsy-looking\u201d joints between the parts.\nFor a first \u201cuseful\u201d print, I selected this one-piece Aeropress wall mount. It\u2019s in the same lineage as my sliced-in-half Aeropress wall mount that I cut into two parts to fit on my printer of the day.\nPhotos would only get in the way of finishing this post, so I\u2019m afraid you\u2019ll have to use your imagination.\nThe new printer meant I was well set up to contribute to the latest We the Builder\u2019s project - Charon\u2019s Boat, which is rapidly being finished by builders all over the world.         "html": "<p>In the <em>very-online</em> cultural discussion around masculinity, the toxic/tonic masculinity divide seems to be getting us absolutely nowhere.</p>\n\n<p>I really thought that perhaps the Tim Walz-ian \u201ctonic masculinity\u201d upswell would have a major influence on America\u2019s body politic\u2026offering a sort of \u201creset\u201d on the kinds of discussions we have around \u201chow to be a man\u201d.</p>\n\n<p>Seems that amounted to a hill of beans. The \u201cmanosphere\u201d won, and the bro vote kept right on bro\u2019ing.</p>\n\n<p>Maybe they\u2019re right! Maybe it\u2019s time to retire toxic/tonic masculinity. But not because the bros are awesome, because they most certainly are not. However, I wonder if we simply need to elevate the conversation past \u201cgender norms\u201d entirely.</p>\n\n<p>As a person who has wrestled with <em>performative masculinity</em> their whole life\u2014and I\u2019m currently working on an entire blog series about my history in this space\u2014I must admit I\u2019m just a wee bit sick of measuring who\u2019s angrier today: <strong>men who hate women, or women who hate men</strong>.</p>\n\n<p>Somehow I think it\u2019s entirely possible to be a good human and exhibit good qualities regardless of assigned <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/gender\">#gender</a> at birth. Can\u2019t we find a way to talk about how to demonstrate humility, compassion, and resolve, how to be one of the \u201chelpers\u201d (as Fred Rogers would say), without \u201cgender\u201d having anything to do with it? Even when well-meaning men talk about what they hope are good qualities of a \u201cman\u201d, I can\u2019t help but wonder why those aren\u2019t equally good qualities of a woman. By the same token, I can\u2019t help but wonder why good qualities of a \u201cwoman\u201d can\u2019t also be exhibited by a man. Men can\u2019t be sensitive caregivers? Women can\u2019t chop wood?</p>\n\n<p>And the more I think about it, the more I find the \u201ctonic masculinity\u201d of Tim Walz always rang hollow for me. It\u2019s not his fault! But here\u2019s the thing: I have zero interest in many of the things people were joking about when they were meme-posting about him. I\u2019m not about to fix up rare jalopies or dress in buffalo check on a wilderness expedition. Why is any of that considered \u201cmanly\u201d in the first place?</p>\n\n<p>I forget exactly where I heard this, but it was a revelation for me: <strong>as a man, whatever you do is what men do</strong>. In other words, if I identify as a man (and that\u2019s a whole other question if I do any longer\u2026), then <strong>\u201cmanly things\u201d are the things I do</strong>.</p>\n\n<p>At the end of the day, performative expressions of socially-expected gender norms in order make other people feel comfortable at your own expense <em>sucks</em>, plain and simple. Now people will have the ability to actually find something in my vast sea of content!\n\nI still need to finish tagging a bunch of stuff to make it useful but having the functionality in place gives me motivation to do so.\n\nI\u2019ve also improved the \u201cbuy box\u201d and added way more streaming providers to the sources (which of course requires more content to be filled out, too), and there\u2019s a bunch of other functionality like being able to browse lyrics and song notes and such from album pages.\n\nThe really neat thing is that most of this stuff, even the dynamic stuff, is done using pure CSS! There\u2019s a little bit of Javascript for a couple of things but I have some ideas about how I can remove that stuff, and it\u2019s not like the javascript is particularly heavyweight anyway.\n\nAt some point I should release the templates as Publ samples, so that others can use this as a basis for building their own music sites too. I thought it had canceled my registration, so I kept trying.
