And I\u2019m dictating this post using Siri, so in a sense nothing I\u2019m doing right now has anything to do with my <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/writing\">#writing</a> workflow on my iPad or Mac.</p>\n\n<p>I contemplate how the type of post I would dictate, rather than type out, would be different. Perhaps this is me at my most raw, most unfiltered\u2026<strong>from my brain to your eyes</strong>.</p>\n\n<p><em>Actually, I\u2019m not sure who wants that\u2026</em> \ud83d\ude02</p>\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a cool thing. In Textastic <strong>I can create my own file templates</strong>. I\u2019ve created one for the <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/browse/thoughts\">Thoughts</a> category, which this post is in, and I can create other templates for categories like <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/browse/links\">Links</a> or <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/browse/articles\">Essays</a>. Because Markdown is plain text, working with it even on a small screen is quite straightforward.</p>\n\n<p>Finish the post, push it up to my repo using Working Copy, wait for <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/bridgetown\">#Bridgetown</a> to rebuild my site\u2026and we\u2019re done.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Oh I\u2019m digging this.</strong> \u263a\ufe0f</p>",

        "html": "<p>\u201cOperation Buy Local\u201d is a rousing success so far!</p>\n\n<p>A few days ago I talked about <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/20241215/radically-local\">how I was going radical on this</a>, and then today nearly by accident I wandered into a warehouse down by the river and discovered that it was <a href=\"https://www.memorydenpdx.com/\">tens of thousands of square feet of vintage goods</a> along with wares by local <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/portland\">#Portland</a> artisans. I had a chance to talk with the Creative Director there and told him it was like Ikea if Ikea was a local antique mall!</p>\n\n<p><img src=\"https://jaredwhite.com/20241218/img_5870b.jpg\" alt=\"Liminal Space\" /></p>\n\n<p><strong>I absolutely had a blast and can\u2019t wait to go back.</strong> I needed some stocking stuffers for the kids, so I ended up buying a toy, a necklace, and a couple of original art prints.</p>\n\n<p>They even have a library! <em>A library!</em></p>\n\n<p><img src=\"https://jaredwhite.com/20241218/img_5869.jpg\" alt=\"Antique radios and cool rooms\" /></p>\n\n<p>The creative director\u2019s own personal curated collection is quite something:</p>\n\n<p><img src=\"https://jaredwhite.com/20241218/img_5866.jpg\" alt=\"Nuclear bomb notice, drink Coca-Cola\" /></p>\n\n<p><img src=\"https://jaredwhite.com/20241218/img_5868.jpg\" alt=\"Casablanca and UNITED we will win\" /></p>\n\n<p><strong>Rad AF.</strong></p>",

        "text": "The vet just got back to me with the results of yesterday\u2019s tests.\n\nHer white blood count is elevated (indicating inflammation or an infection), and the radiologist says that the concerning bits on her lungs are just her asthma being especially bad right now.\n\nSo, we\u2019re giving her a short course of Prednisone and hopefully that clears things up.\n\nIt\u2019s unclear what caused the weight loss but given how enthusiastic she\u2019s been about wet food and how meh she\u2019s been about dry food, I think she\u2019s just going to get a lot more wet food going forward. That\u2019ll make it easier to give her the meds anyway.\n\nThe most important takeaway is that she is almost certainly not dying any time soon. Yay!",

You\u2019re going about your day, minding your own business, feeling good about your \u201cadulting\u201d skills, and then a cascade of events begins to unfold which leaves your schedule FUBARed and your composure in tatters.</p>\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing though. Your \u201cgood day\u201d was an illusion to begin with. You had deluded yourself into thinking you had it all together. It was taking an extraordinary amount of effort to \u201cadult\u201d in the first place, and as soon as bottom fell out of your routine, it was time for such magical thinking to dissipate.</p>\n\n<p><strong>This is actually an improvement.</strong> Your freakout is a sign that you had failed to do what you should have done from the start, which is to prepare for the truth: you\u2019ll encounter minor setbacks <em>all the time</em>. And on occasion, though we wish it were otherwise, a major setback.</p>\n\n<p>The worthy challenge isn\u2019t to delude yourself into thinking you\u2019ll be able to avoid these bumps in the road. It\u2019s to <em>expect</em> them. The faster you are willing to engage with them, face them head-on, and then <strong>move on</strong> to whatever may happen next, the more you will discover they tend to fade from view quickly and with little fuss.</p>\n\n<p>I had my freakout moment earlier today. Now, as I write this, it\u2019s water under the bridge. <strong>Problem solved.</strong> Was my schedule interrupted? Sure. Is that upsetting in the moment? Sure. Will I have to make up for lost time over the next few days? She isn\u2019t sneezing anymore, and while she\u2019s still a bit congested she snuggled up with me in bed this morning, and right now she\u2019s being super snuggly and affectionate. She\u2019s also purring super loudly, which she hasn\u2019t done in a while.\n\nI still haven\u2019t heard from the vet about her bloodwork or x-rays but I feel like there\u2019s a lot less to worry about now.",

        "text": "This week I finished up a fun and challenging screen printing class at the Gowanus Print Lab!\nTucked away in the giant maze of brick buildings that is Brooklyn's Industry City, Gowanus Print lab is a small space, mightily equipped for paper and fabric screen printing projects.\nOur instructor (and the proprietor) Todd took me and three other students through four 3-hour sessions: a hands-on instruction session introducing the basics of screen printing on apparel, an open apparel-printing lab where we could bring our own project of up to about 30 pieces, an instruction session on two-color paper printing (featuring our own designs), and a final do-what-you-want lab with the option to do a single-screen apparel run or up to three screens for a paper project.\nI consider myself a person with little in the way of art skills, so with three opportunities to design basically whatever I wanted, I struggled a lot with anxiety and trying to push various software to turn half-imagined ideas into simple designs. I also had an \"A-student mentality\" kick in, driving me to maximize each session, which led to way more angst about deciding what to make than necessary. \ud83e\udee0\n\n  Anyway, here are some photos of my finished projects!\n\n\n    Eternal Caturday shirt featuring a spiral of Lolly cats surrounding a large image of her making big owl eyes. It's a lot of steps, but they're all about using careful prep to make things easier when it's time to start pulling the squeegee and churning out prints.\n\n  In terms of moving forward, I'd say the biggest thing I need to work on is a design practice - regularly pushing my skills with design software techniques. I'm in a bit of a negative cycle of having vague ideas combined with not enough skills to quickly sketch them out. I learned some new techniques in Inkscape (soo good for layout!) and the GIMP (newsprint filter and color managment!) but need to challenge myself to improve.\n\nThat said, I also need, uh, facilities?? A home setup feels pretty far out of reach given limited space and the potential for mess. I\u2019d already resolved to boycott Amazon, and at this point I don\u2019t feel too good supporting Shopify either (though that\u2019s different in that many independent online retailers use Shopify for their e-commerce websites).</p>\n\n<p>But when I talk about going radically local, I don\u2019t mean just going to a local store even if they\u2019re a Big Box retailer. I mean buying things <em>made</em> locally. Right here in <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/portland\">#Portland</a>.</p>\n\n<p>Every day I carry my iPad and other gear in a backpack made locally. (So local in fact, I can walk to the manufacturer/storefront from my house in 5 minutes. \ud83d\ude02) And that\u2019s just the beginning. My next clothing purchase will be locally-made. I\u2019ll start with shirts because that\u2019s pretty straightforward and see where it goes from there.</p>\n\n<p>And I love shopping at locally-owned markets and will prioritize food items from local suppliers.</p>\n\n<p>If MAGA wants to claim with a straight face they\u2019re \u201cAmerica First\u201d, I\u2019m here to tell you I\u2019m \u201cOregon First\u201d. Delays and SSGs, Oh My

        "text": "Apologies for the delay between posts \u2014 it\u2019s not for lack of topics or interest, just a matter of time and energy. I\u2019ve been spending time trying out different static site generators for a potential move off WordPress (at least for some projects), and that\u2019s been eating into what spoons I have spare for writing. At this point I\u2019ve been fiddling mostly with 11ty and Astro, and while I\u2019m not 100% happy with either of them, it\u2019s been a worthwhile learning experience regardless. I may also end up taking a stab at Hugo, but we\u2019ll see. The main issues I have mostly boil down to opinion \u2014 every framework is opinionated to one degree or another regarding how to structure things, how to format things, and so on, and I don\u2019t agree with those opinions all the time. Then it becomes a matter of how hard it is to override those defaults to work more how I want to work.\n\n\n\nFor instance, a lot of these frameworks/generators feel that any images you include should be optimized, and when optimizing, the file paths should become arbitrary hashes. I don\u2019t mind the optimizing part, but I fuckin\u2019 hate when the filename gets mangled into a hash like that. You\u2019d think that\u2019d be a matter of just passing a parameter as part of the image processor config, but in several of these frameworks, you\u2019d be wrong. At least in 11ty I found some instructions in their docs to override things, but in Astro I was just out of luck, unless I wanted to store my images separately in the \u201cpublic\u201d folder.\n\n\n\nAnother recurring gripe I have is that the default markup is just markdown. Frequently either GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) or CommonMark. These are fine as far as markdown goes, but they\u2019re kind of limiting when you want to do anything more nuanced than basic formatting. Even things as common as changing the alignment for an image don\u2019t have a generally agreed process. At which point, the question becomes: how hard is it to extend things to let you do stuff you want to do? 11ty lets you mix in a whole pile of different templating tools (Nunjucks, Handlebars, Liquid, etc), and extend things to add your own shortcodes and filters to let things work how you want. Astro gives you a few different markdown flavors, so you can go with markdown, MDX, or markdoc. From there, both MDX and markdoc have methods to extend your behavior. Personally, I\u2019m actually more inclined to use a different markup entirely, and write everything in AsciiDoc, which I\u2019m very comfortable with from work, and is designed to let you do the various bits of formatting you\u2019d want to do in documentation (or a blog post, or an article/essay). The options for SSGs that support AsciiDoc, though, are quite a bit more limited \u2014 I\u2019m aware of basically just two, Antora (which is oriented around documentation, not around blogging), and Hugo (which I should really give another shot).\n\n\n\nSo yeah, that\u2019s basically where all that is sitting. Frankly none of the things I just griped about are all that important, but it\u2019s been taking up that headspace I\u2019d be usually using for writing on here, so figured I\u2019d share. Well If It’s Entertainment You’re Kraven…

        "html": "<p>I haven\u2019t had the slightest bit of interest in the weird phenomenon that is the <a href=\"https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony%27s_Spider-Man_Universe\">SSU</a> (Sony\u2019s Spider-Man Universe). I never saw any of the Venom films. Never saw Madame Web. And it\u2019s definitely not <em>Morbin\u2019 Time</em> for me.</p>\n\n<p>But then I started hearing some buzz around the footage Sony released recently directly from the start of <em>Kraven the Hunter</em>, so I gave it a look and what I saw impressed me. The story genuinely sounded interesting, and Aaron-Taylor Johnson is a beautiful, beautiful man.</p>\n\n<p>So I headed out to my local movie theater and watched <em>Kraven the Hunter</em>.</p>\n\n<p>Is this a great film? No. Is it an extraordinary <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/scifi\">#scifi</a> superhero romp? Also no. Is it fun &amp; entertaining if you\u2019re ready to simply switch your brain off and enjoy the ride for a couple hours? <strong>Very much so!</strong></p>\n\n<p>I had a good time with it, and I think it <em>could</em> have been an excellent movie in the hands of more competent filmmakers. The action was quite exciting, and I liked all the <em>actors</em>.         "text": "I haven\u2019t had the slightest bit of interest in the weird phenomenon that is the SSU (Sony\u2019s Spider-Man Universe). I never saw any of the Venom films. Never saw Madame Web. And it\u2019s definitely not Morbin\u2019 Time for me.\n\nBut then I started hearing some buzz around the footage Sony released recently directly from the start of Kraven the Hunter, so I gave it a look and what I saw impressed me. The story genuinely sounded interesting, and Aaron-Taylor Johnson is a beautiful, beautiful man.\n\nSo I headed out to my local movie theater and watched Kraven the Hunter.\n\nIs this a great film? No. Is it an extraordinary #scifi superhero romp? Also no. Is it fun & entertaining if you\u2019re ready to simply switch your brain off and enjoy the ride for a couple hours? Very much so!\n\nI had a good time with it, and I think it could have been an excellent movie in the hands of more competent filmmakers. The action was quite exciting, and I liked all the actors.
