In the midst of going through my mom Deborah’s old papers, I found a typed-out poem of sorts attributed to an anonymous “85 year old woman”. I appreciated the sentiment, and I wondered what it meant to my mom—who unfortunately never got to live to the ripe old age of 85.
I was about to post it here without further comment, but then I realized Aha! I have the Internet! I can search for a phrase from the poem and perhaps learn more about it!
And that’s when I discovered…this wasn’t written by an 85 year old woman at all. 😱
At first it seemed to be attributed to one “Nadine Stair” so I thought maybe she was the 85 year old woman. But then I found this Wikipedia page about the poem, titled Moments, which explains that it was originally published under the title I’d Pick More Daises and written by Don Herold, who was a humorist and cartoonist who…also didn’t live to 85 but died at the age of 76. And there was never any Nadine Stair—that name was invented so the poem could be republished in a slightly modified form for a female audience.
There’s also a version in Spanish wrongly attributed to Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges.
I think maybe I now regret looking this up on the Internet. 😂

It all sounds <em>batshit crazy</em>. I feel like I\u2019m spouting off insane conspiracy theories. It sounds like speculative fiction written in a fever dream by an author who\u2019s been dropping acid much too frequently.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Department of Government Efficiency</strong>, or D.O.G.E, because <em>DOGE</em> ha ha get it? ha ha. That doesn\u2019t sound like real life. That sounds like something you\u2019d come across in a particularly screwy episode of <em>Helluva Boss</em>.</p>\n\n<p>\u201cAccidentally\u201d firing hundreds of people overseeing the <strong>NUCLEAR ARSENAL</strong> of the United States of America\u2026and then struggling to figure out <em>HOW TO CONTACT SOME OF THEM TO UN-FIRE THEM??!!?!</em></p>\n\n<p>This wouldn\u2019t even end up in a work of fiction. The editor would take a red pen to it because this stuff\u2019s not only far too outlandish, it sounds stupidly stupid and dumb, dumb, dumb. <em>So dumb.</em></p>\n\n<p>I keep telling my teen this isn\u2019t <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/politics\">#politics</a> as usual under any circumstances. <strong>I apologize, over and over again, that they\u2019re coming of age</strong> in an age of sheer lunacy, idiocy, and fashy buffoonery\u2026that the optimism of youthful Millennials believing they were ushering in a 21st Century filled with technological wonders, abundant resources, and pluralistic freedom in a spirit of inclusion had quickly\u2014shockingly\u2014given way to, well, the usual suspects of the dregs of history: <strong>Greed. "html": "<p><strong>PSYCH!</strong> \ud83d\ude1c</p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/20241207/daily-blogging-in-2025\">I announced back on December 7</a> I\u2019d be daily blogging throughout 2025, and then <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/20250104/first-four-weeks-of-daily-blogging\">on January 4</a> I offered an initial assessment as to how things were going (as I\u2019d actually started right then and there in December as a trial balloon).</p>\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what I think now, two months in:</p>\n\n<p><strong>I love it! But I wish I\u2019d given myself a \u201cget out of blogging free\u201d card I could use once, perhaps twice a month.</strong></p>\n\n<p>The Good: the imperative that <em>I simply must do it</em> every day solves a ton of scheduling headaches. No need to keep track of when I last posted or when I should post next if it\u2019s every day like clockwork! And the drive to have to do this frequently means I\u2019ve covered a much wider range of topics than I might have otherwise.</p>\n\n<p>The Bad: like I said, I do wish I\u2019d given myself the occasional \u201cout\u201d. Every now and then, when I am ill or extremely tired or life just gets in the way, I\u2019d love to be able to say \u201coh well, better luck next time\u201d instead of having to half-ass cobble something together at the last minute (and I mean <em>literally like 11:59 at night</em> on an occasion or two!).</p>\n\n<p>I think, when this challenge is over, I\u2019ll come up with a system along those lines. Yet the core habits I\u2019m forming now \u2014 <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/writing\">#writing</a> on a daily basis come hell or high water \u2014 will serve me well long into the future.</p>\n\n<p>While I work during the day as a web programmer, I consider myself first and foremost a <strong>web publisher</strong>. This is my calling in life, even if it\u2019s not my principal vocation, and it feels ever more true as time passes. Some day, my career as a programmer may draw to a close. But writing? <strong>I\u2019ll keep doing that until such day the breath leaves my body.</strong></p>",
