Also I didn’t take this photograph of Mt. Hood. (Wish I did!)

My journey began February 28. I handed in the keys. My car was packed. My storage unit was stuffed. I was ready to hit the road*.

* (To a certain degree. It was my weekend with the kids, so I actually drove partway to where they live with their mom and we stayed at a fun hotel in Corvallis, Oregon…a lovely little college town next to the Willamette River.)

Note: Most of these photos & videos are raw and unedited, right out of my iPhone Pro camera.

I'm excited to be back at the Riverfront—and done with my @#$@$#*% move!

A captivating sunset near Harrisburg
After the weekend festivities, my first true car camping excursions were in and around the Eugene & Springfield area—also a nice (larger) college town next to the Willamette River. And when I say next to the river, I really mean it embraces the river (much in the same way that Portland does).

Left: Looking east over the river with the University of Oregon nearby.
Right: Sunset at Alton Baker ParkAutzen Canal Bridge over the Willamette River
Alas—from an urbanist perspective, there are some truly questionable aspects of this region. Yes, they’ve made strides to build out a bike network as well as a BRT line called EmX. For cyclists, the paths on either side of the river are fantastic, and if you’re a tourist you can easily rent a bike from many downtown kiosks.

But stray a ways away from “the good places” and it gets bad real fast—especially West Eugene which I tried (and failed) to avoid. Imagine the worst of East Portland, and that’s West Eugene.

Thankfully, the good places are good indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed a combination beer hall & food cart pod in Eugene called Beergarden, as well as a cutesy coffee shop just a smidge south of the main thoroughfare called Meraki Coffee & Co.

Left: Me enjoying a pint! Er, maybe more than a pint…
Right: A yummy scone, probably marionberry which is the absolute BEST
Beyond the city center(s), I thoroughly enjoyed the areas near the river or up in the hills and found some lovely parks, such as Dorris Ranch in Springfield.

A picturesque location indeed
Also shoutout to Shotgun Creek Recreation Site which is BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land in the hills northeast of Springfield where there are plenty of places to park and unwind as well as a staging area for OHVs (Off-Road Vehicles) if you’re into that sort of thing.

Shotgun Creek, Presumably
A Note About “Car Camping”

You may be wondering what I mean when I say car camping. For me, it’s basically the stripped-down version of “hashtag Van Life”. My car is my home. I travel in it, work it in, eat in it, relax in it, and sleep in it (I’m pleasantly surprised how cozy my bed is after some initial effort getting the right combo of a bottom board and foam mattresses). I stay in places where overnight parking is permitted…my favorite locations of course being real campgrounds or “dispersed camping” areas (on public lands like state or national forests or BLM), but highway rest stops are also a (mostly) decent option. In-town street parking in a pinch, yes, but that’s a real mixed bag and I try to avoid it if I can.

There are also “AirBnB but for camping” apps out there such as Hipcamp (more on that in future installments), and you can also get connected with the Van Life community to find some more out-of-the-way places which cater to the nomadic community in particular. I’m just starting to learn about a lot of this myself!

I’ll have more to say about the mechanics of car camping in later installments…such as what you do when you need to brush your teeth and you’re super tired and don’t feel like putting pants back on and crawling out of your vehicle and stumbling through the cold and the dark in an unfamiliar campground just to find a sink. 😅

Back to Portland (The Highlights)

The following week I had some business in Portland to attend to, so I hightailed it back to my old stomping grounds…but now with a new perspective of being a traveler. It’s always fun to pretend to be a tourist in your own town, and now I could really do it! A few highlights:

Left: The first cherry blossoms have finally arrived!
Right: Super fab loaded nachos by Bravos Tacos food cart

A great day to ride my scooter along Rock Creek Trail on the westside

Left: Screengrab from this video by Sarah Berkowitz
Right: I found the exact same spot in real life!

A captivating sunset near HarrisburgAfter the weekend festivities, my first true car camping excursions were in and around the Eugene & Springfield area—also a nice (larger) college town next to the Willamette River. And when I say next to the river, I really mean it embraces the river (much in the same way that Portland does).

Left: Looking east over the river with the University of Oregon nearby.
Right: Sunset at Alton Baker ParkAutzen Canal Bridge over the Willamette RiverAlas—from an urbanist perspective, there are some truly questionable aspects of this region.

Right: A yummy scone, probably marionberry which is the absolute BESTBeyond the city center(s), I thoroughly enjoyed the areas near the river or up in the hills and found some lovely parks, such as Dorris Ranch in Springfield.

A picturesque location indeedAlso shoutout to Shotgun Creek Recreation Site which is BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land in the hills northeast of Springfield where there are plenty of places to park and unwind as well as a staging area for OHVs (Off-Road Vehicles) if you’re into that sort of thing.

Shotgun Creek, PresumablyA Note About “Car Camping”

It's in Forest Park along Cornell Rd

The latest Portland food hot spot: Flock

Left: Flock is in the new Ritz-Carlton building
Is this the bunny version of Deadmau5?I’ll be real honest. I didn’t totally dig Flock at first…it felt very rich tourist-oriented and wasn’t giving off those authentic “Keep Portland Weird” vibes. But then I read this article about the push for diversity in this new food hall and how all the vendors are BIPOC-owned, so that made me feel better.

And finally…

A super burrito of some kind at my favorite Mexican restaurant in Portland (Hillsdale): Casa ColimaTip of the Northern Oregon Coast

Because the weather in Oregon in early March was pretty wet and cold-ish, it took me a while to start getting out to “awesome places” (not that Portland and there areas thereabouts aren’t awesome!).

One major exception: Fort Stevens State Park.

It’s located right at the tip of land west of Astoria and Youngs Bay and south of Baker Bay and Cape Disappointment on the Washington State side of the Columbia River. I regret that I only stayed here one night, because even with the wind and the rain, it was absolutely gorgeous. A beautiful campground easily accessible, yet once there you felt like you were in the middle of a quiet coastal forest (because you were!). We should have listened to Stevie Nicks.
Last year, she released this powerful call to action. We should have listened to her. We should have fought harder.
I just pray it’s not too late.
The Lighthouse (excerpt)
I have my scars, you have yours
Don’t let them take your power
Don’t leave it alone in the final hours
They’ll take your soul, they’ll take your power
Unless you stand up and take it back
Try to see the future and get mad
It’s slipping through your fingers, you don’t have what you had
You don’t have much time to get it back
In the midnight hour, they’ll slam the door
Make you forget what you were fighting for
Put you back in your place, they’ll shut you down
You better learn how to fight, you better say it out loud

And when I did buy new things, much of the time it was because (a) it was cheap, and (b) I needed it. Utility above all else.

Then in my late 20s, I got married. Suddenly I had a ton of things in our house, many of which I had absolutely no say over because obviously they were the property of my wife. Moving forward, our stuff was an amalgam of things I wanted, things she wanted, and things neither of us wanted but we hadn’t bothered to remove or replace. Add kids into the mix, and the lines are blurred even further (and the clutter accumulates exponentially!).

Then, in my late 30s, I got divorced. And in somewhat of a similar fashion to my previous decade, I ended up with a hodgepodge of items some of which were mine, some of which were my ex-wife’s that she wasn’t partial to—and of course, some of which were my kids.

Fast forward to the beginning of this year when I made the decision to transition to the #NomadLifestyle for a season. Since I knew I would be renting a not-terribly-large storage unit and anything not coming along with me for the ride would have to fit into that unit, I began the serious process of downsizing. And in that process, and even now as I still ponder this new leg of my life’s journey, I’ve realized something rather horrifying:

There was hardly anything in my possession I truly loved.

What is Valuable

In the past, I might have brushed off this thought entirely. After all, perhaps that’s a good thing! I should “value experiences” or people over material things. Or perhaps it was simply a sign of me being thrifty: why spend a bunch of money on a fancy-pants table napkin when a sponge works just fine?

But this is the year when I’ve been carefully and methodically revisiting all of my life’s choices and giving heed to anything about my habits, routines, even personality I feel no longer serves my best interests now and in the future. And a singular thought has begun to dawn for me:

What if every one of my possessions were actually extremely valuable?

Now this begs the question: what is valuable? I don’t merely take this to mean expensive. In some cases, yes, that may very well be the case. But when I say valuable, I mean this item is valuable to me. It is meaningful. It is appreciated. It has a story. It has presence. In other word, it’s got a vibe.

And to a certain degree, it is exclusive. Put simply: I would rather own one really, really, really, really great fork than own a dozen crappy forks. Extrapolate that to nearly everything else. Instead of a bunch of shirts I don’t particularly care for—have just a handful of awesome shirts I love to wear, that are meaningful to me in some real way. Instead (once I am permanently housed again) of a bunch of paintings and photos hanging on walls most of which I don’t particularly fancy at this point, I have one or two art pieces which are striking and inspiring. Instead of a bunch of cheap-ass chairs none of which are particularly attractive or comfortable, maybe I only own one chair which is the best damn chair ever.

I think you get the point.

Rather than pride myself on my lack of care in the material world I surround myself with, like somehow I’m more spiritual or more practical that way, I have come to realize I want the exact opposite. I want to stop being cheap. I want to purchase things even that are expensive—not because of the status of it, but because it’s well-made, perhaps even handmade, sourced with high-quality materials and crafted with real artistry.

In lieu of being rich, however, this new approach definitely requires a degree of sacrifice. I’m OK with that. I would rather live in a small dwelling that’s mostly empty—but what is in it is fabulous—than live in a large house filled with disposable nonsense and cheap garbage. I found it quite depressing, in fact, as I was putting the stuff I did end up keeping into my storage unit, that the vast majority of items I was storing had virtually no value. Nobody else would care to spend any real money acquiring these items. You could poof most of those items out of existence, then replace them with similar items from the usual national chains and discount stores, and nobody really could tell the difference.

Honestly, I was aghast. How could I, as an “artist”, as a creative person, as someone who ostensibly cares deeply about aesthetics and fit and form and finish, stand to surround myself with total crap?

It started to make me wonder if this had been a real drag on my mental health for some time and I hadn’t even realized it until now. The only explanation I could come up with (other than just not wanting to or not being able to spend a lot of money) is that I’ve spent so much of my life caring deeply about the digital world, and not so much the physical world. The boundaries of my artistic sensibilities had been set mainly to the confines of my screens, and thus to a fair degree everything beyond suffered.

Ultimately, I had become my own worst enemy. By continuing to place myself—to be perfectly honest—in a slobby mess of an abode, I was slowly crushing my own spirit.

A Total Reset of My Physical World

There’s a host of reasons I’m now rocking the nomadic lifestyle, living as a true minimalist, but one of the reasons it seems I’ve discovered in hindsight and wasn’t necessarily part of my original plan. And that is the chance to reset what I choose to surround myself with.

I’m done with the hand-me-downs.

I’m done with the detritus of past relationships and failed endeavors.

I’m done with the stuff that’s lazily obtained and cheaply made.

I’m done with anything that isn’t imbued with real meaning and artistry and “good vibes”.

And yes, this does mean it may take a long time—years even—to slowly and methodically build up an inventory of a household once again. But I am confident I will be far happier and far more appreciative of what I have and will have as I embark on this totally new philosophy.

Past me might have scoffed at the idea I might one day spend several thousands dollars on a single table (handcrafted by a local artisan). I’m pissed off. “tHe lAw AnD OrDeR pArtY” said they’re ignoring the Supreme Court’s order to return Abrego Garcia to the US. They kidnapped him from his wife and kid and sold him off to a torture prison in El Salvador. They can do this to anyone and it’s your word against theirs. No due process.
