I probably wouldn\u2019t buy one, because it doesn\u2019t actually fit any of my needs as described (also IMO it\u2019s kind of fugly), but I really hope that they expand their offerings a bit. In particular, I\u2019d love to see a four-door model happen (I don\u2019t drive other people often but when I do they usually have accessibility concerns!), and the addition of power windows would be really nice as well.\n\nI do have my doubts about whether it can actually launch for the anticipated price, but they\u2019re at least getting a lot of hype right now, and I love the concept of a barebones modular vehice where you only add the stuff you actually care about.\n\nIf I were to get one I\u2019d definitely want to add a CarPlay display and audio amplifier. Fortunately there are already plenty of things on the market that could be used for this purpose, and I\u2019m sure those will be among the first things to be adapted for the Slate if/when the vehicle comes to market.\n\nI also hope that the hype around this causes other manufacturers to realize that there\u2019s a market for lower-spec EVs. "html": "<p>A short addendum to <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/articles/a-nomads-pnw-travelogue-part-i\">Part I of my Travelogue</a>:</p>\n\n<p>I realize I didn\u2019t mention much about what I\u2019m doing for work as I live the <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/nomadlifestyle\">#NomadLifestyle</a>. I\u2019m doing the same thing I\u2019ve already been doing for years, <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/freelancing\">#freelancing</a> as a software developer for my boutique web studio <a href=\"https://www.whitefusion.studio/\">Whitefusion</a>.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Working on the go isn\u2019t anything new for me.</strong> I had gone on short \u201cdigital nomad\u201d excursions on a regular basis long before hitting the road full-time. It\u2019s been a matter for pride for me that I can work in almost any conceivable environment. I\u2019ve worked in:</p>\n\n<ul><li>Planes</li>\n <li>Trains</li>\n <li>Automobiles</li>\n <li>Parks</li>\n <li>Mountaintops</li>\n <li>Libraries</li>\n <li>Boats</li>\n <li>Steps Behind a Building</li>\n <li>Coworking Spaces</li>\n <li>Caf\u00e9s</li>\n <li>Pubs</li>\n <li>AirBnBs</li>\n <li>Hotels</li>\n <li>Grocery Stores</li>\n <li>Beaches</li>\n <li>Churches</li>\n <li>Conventions</li>\n <li>Next to a Creek</li>\n <li>Athletic Clubs</li>\n <li>And Yes, Home Offices</li>\n</ul><p>In a certain sense, that last option is the least appealing to me which is why I never fully resonated with the concept <em>Work From Home</em>. For me, <em>Remote Work</em> has always had little real overlap per se with WFH. I could literally head into an office every day and \u201cwork a 9 to 5\u201d \u2014 and yet it\u2019s remote work. In fact, I\u2019ve done exactly that at times when I\u2019ve had a membership or even a dedicated desk at a particular coworking space.</p>\n\n<p>Remote work and also being a digital nomad to me simply means that nobody is dictating the <em>how</em> of my getting the job done. <strong>They simply evaluate the merits of the outcome.</strong> Whether that outcome was obtained because I did some work at an office desk or because I did some work in a yurt in the middle of the woods is completely beside the point. I\u2019m very thankful I\u2019m able to make a living\u2014challenging certainly in this crazy Tech Industry season we\u2019re in\u2014as a remote worker.</p>\n\n<p>With regards to the journey I\u2019m currently on, I definitely have to manage some logistics at times around where I\u2019ll be able to find a decent cell signal or Wi-Fi. Starbucks has certainly saved my butt now and again. I ended up joining the \u201cSip Club\u201d at Panera Bread which has also been very helpful when I\u2019m in major urban centers. <strong>Independent coffee shops in all sorts of out-of-the-way places are always a blessing.</strong> Some nicer grocery stores with seating have also worked wonders. And any chance I get, <strong>I always seek out a local library</strong>. They are truly treasures of the common good and rare examples of public spaces open to all.</p>\n\n<p>But sometimes I\u2019ve simply sat in my car seat with a little attachment that fits over the steering wheel to provide me with a \u201cdesk\u201d for my laptop while using my iPhone\u2019s Personal Hotspot feature. T-Mobile has been pretty good to me a decent amount of the time.</p>\n\n<p>I could greatly level up my \u201coff-grid\u201d work opportunities if I purchased Starlink, but do I want to hand a single penny over to Space Karen? <em>Aw HELL naw!</em> So I make do.</p>\n\n<p>That\u2019s pretty much the gist of it. And when I say next to the river, I really mean it <em>embraces</em> the river (much in the same way that Portland does).</p>\n\n<a href=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6650.jpg\">\n <img src=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6650.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6650.jpg\" /></a>\n <a href=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6661.jpg\">\n <img src=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6661.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6661.jpg\" /></a>\n \n Left: Looking east over the river with the University of Oregon nearby. <br />Right: Sunset at Alton Baker ParkAutzen Canal Bridge over the Willamette River<p>Alas\u2014from an urbanist perspective, there are some truly questionable aspects of this region. Yes, they\u2019ve made strides to build out a bike network as well as a BRT line called EmX. For cyclists, the paths on either side of the river are <em>fantastic</em>, and if you\u2019re a tourist you can easily rent a bike from many downtown kiosks.</p>\n\n<p>But stray a ways away from \u201cthe good places\u201d and it gets bad real fast\u2014especially West Eugene which I tried (and failed) to avoid. Imagine the worst of East Portland, and that\u2019s West Eugene.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Thankfully, the good places are good indeed.</strong> I thoroughly enjoyed a combination beer hall & food cart pod in Eugene called <a href=\"https://www.beergardenme.com/\">Beergarden</a>, as well as a cutesy coffee shop just a smidge south of the main thoroughfare called <a href=\"https://www.drinkmeraki.com/\">Meraki Coffee & Co</a>.</p>\n\n<a href=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6663.jpg\">\n <img src=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6663.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6663.jpg\" /></a>\n <a href=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6672.jpg\">\n <img src=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6672.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6672.jpg\" /></a>\n \n Left: Me enjoying a pint! Er, maybe more than a pint\u2026 <br />Right: A yummy scone, probably marionberry which is the absolute BEST<p>Beyond the city center(s), I thoroughly enjoyed the areas near the river or up in the hills and found some lovely parks, such as <a href=\"https://www.willamalane.org/places/dorris-ranch\">Dorris Ranch</a> in Springfield.</p>\n\nA picturesque location indeed<p>Also shoutout to <a href=\"https://www.blm.gov/visit/shotgun-creek-recreation-site\">Shotgun Creek Recreation Site</a> which is BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land in the hills northeast of Springfield where there are plenty of places to park and unwind as well as a staging area for OHVs (Off-Road Vehicles) if you\u2019re into that sort of thing.</p>\n\nShotgun Creek, Presumably<h3>A Note About \u201cCar Camping\u201d</h3>\n\n<p>You may be wondering what I mean when I say car camping. For me, it\u2019s basically the stripped-down version of \u201chashtag Van Life\u201d. My car is my home. I travel in it, work it in, eat in it, relax in it, and sleep in it (I\u2019m pleasantly surprised how cozy my bed is after some initial effort getting the right combo of a bottom board and foam mattresses). I stay in places where overnight parking is permitted\u2026my favorite locations of course being real campgrounds or \u201cdispersed camping\u201d areas (on public lands like state or national forests or BLM), but highway rest stops are also a (mostly) decent option. In-town street parking in a pinch, yes, but that\u2019s a real mixed bag and I try to avoid it if I can.</p>\n\n<p>There are also \u201cAirBnB but for camping\u201d apps out there such as <a href=\"https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US\">Hipcamp</a> (more on that in future installments), and you can also get connected with the Van Life community to find some more out-of-the-way places which cater to the nomadic community in particular. I\u2019m just starting to learn about a lot of this myself!</p>\n\n<p>I\u2019ll have more to say about the mechanics of car camping in later installments\u2026such as what you do when you need to brush your teeth and you\u2019re super tired and don\u2019t feel like putting pants back on and crawling out of your vehicle and stumbling through the cold and the dark in an unfamiliar campground just to find a sink. \ud83d\ude05</p>\n\n<h3>Back to Portland (The Highlights)</h3>\n\n<p>The following week I had some business in Portland to attend to, so I hightailed it back to my old stomping grounds\u2026but now with a new perspective of being a traveler. It\u2019s always fun to pretend to be a tourist in your own town, and now I could really do it! I didn\u2019t totally dig Flock at first\u2026it felt very <em>rich tourist-oriented</em> and wasn\u2019t giving off those authentic \u201cKeep Portland Weird\u201d vibes. But then <a href=\"https://bridgetownbites.com/2025/01/30/flock-food-hall-first-look-portland-oregon/\">I read this article</a> about the push for diversity in this new food hall and how all the vendors are BIPOC-owned, so that made me feel better.</p>\n\n<p>And finally\u2026</p>\n\n<a href=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6744.jpg\">\n <img src=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6744.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6744.jpg\" /></a>\n \n A super burrito of some kind at my favorite Mexican restaurant in Portland (Hillsdale): <a href=\"https://casacolima.com/\">Casa Colima</a><h3>Tip of the Northern Oregon Coast</h3>\n\n<p>Because the weather in Oregon in early March was pretty wet and cold-ish, it took me a while to start getting out to \u201cawesome places\u201d (not that Portland and there areas thereabouts aren\u2019t awesome!).</p>\n\n<p>One major exception: <a href=\"https://stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=129\">Fort Stevens State Park</a>.</p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s located right at the tip of land west of Astoria and Youngs Bay and south of Baker Bay and Cape Disappointment on the Washington State side of the Columbia River. I regret that I only stayed here one night, because even with the wind and the rain, it was absolutely <em>gorgeous</em>. A beautiful campground easily accessible, yet once there you felt like you were in the middle of a quiet coastal forest (because you were!). And I did!</p>\n\n<a href=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6790.jpg\">\n <img src=\"https://intuitivefuture.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/travelogue/2025/IMG_6790.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6790.jpg\" /></a>\n \n In nearby Hammond, my wish was granted at the delightful <a href=\"http://www.southjettybar.com/\">South Jetty Dining Room & Bar</a> where I had a glass of wine and <em>fantastic</em> clam chowder<p>I\u2019m definitely going back, although as the weather rapidly improves I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll start to be harder to find camping sites to reserve. I handed in the keys. My car was packed. My storage unit was stuffed. I was ready to hit the road*.\n\n* (To a certain degree. It was my weekend with the kids, so I actually drove partway to where they live with their mom and we stayed at a fun hotel in Corvallis, Oregon\u2026a lovely little college town next to the Willamette River.)\n\nNote: Most of these photos & videos are raw and unedited, right out of my iPhone Pro camera.\n\n\n \n \n I'm excited to be back at the Riverfront\u2014and done with my @#$@$#*% move!\n \n \n A captivating sunset near HarrisburgAfter the weekend festivities, my first true car camping excursions were in and around the Eugene & Springfield area\u2014also a nice (larger) college town next to the Willamette River. And when I say next to the river, I really mean it embraces the river (much in the same way that Portland does).\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Left: Looking east over the river with the University of Oregon nearby. \nRight: Sunset at Alton Baker ParkAutzen Canal Bridge over the Willamette RiverAlas\u2014from an urbanist perspective, there are some truly questionable aspects of this region. Yes, they\u2019ve made strides to build out a bike network as well as a BRT line called EmX. For cyclists, the paths on either side of the river are fantastic, and if you\u2019re a tourist you can easily rent a bike from many downtown kiosks.\n\nBut stray a ways away from \u201cthe good places\u201d and it gets bad real fast\u2014especially West Eugene which I tried (and failed) to avoid. Imagine the worst of East Portland, and that\u2019s West Eugene.\n\nThankfully, the good places are good indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed a combination beer hall & food cart pod in Eugene called Beergarden, as well as a cutesy coffee shop just a smidge south of the main thoroughfare called Meraki Coffee & Co.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Left: Me enjoying a pint! Er, maybe more than a pint\u2026 \nRight: A yummy scone, probably marionberry which is the absolute BESTBeyond the city center(s), I thoroughly enjoyed the areas near the river or up in the hills and found some lovely parks, such as Dorris Ranch in Springfield.\n\nA picturesque location indeedAlso shoutout to Shotgun Creek Recreation Site which is BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land in the hills northeast of Springfield where there are plenty of places to park and unwind as well as a staging area for OHVs (Off-Road Vehicles) if you\u2019re into that sort of thing.\n\nShotgun Creek, PresumablyA Note About \u201cCar Camping\u201d\n\nYou may be wondering what I mean when I say car camping. For me, it\u2019s basically the stripped-down version of \u201chashtag Van Life\u201d. My car is my home. I travel in it, work it in, eat in it, relax in it, and sleep in it (I\u2019m pleasantly surprised how cozy my bed is after some initial effort getting the right combo of a bottom board and foam mattresses). I stay in places where overnight parking is permitted\u2026my favorite locations of course being real campgrounds or \u201cdispersed camping\u201d areas (on public lands like state or national forests or BLM), but highway rest stops are also a (mostly) decent option. In-town street parking in a pinch, yes, but that\u2019s a real mixed bag and I try to avoid it if I can.\n\nThere are also \u201cAirBnB but for camping\u201d apps out there such as Hipcamp (more on that in future installments), and you can also get connected with the Van Life community to find some more out-of-the-way places which cater to the nomadic community in particular. I\u2019m just starting to learn about a lot of this myself!\n\nI\u2019ll have more to say about the mechanics of car camping in later installments\u2026such as what you do when you need to brush your teeth and you\u2019re super tired and don\u2019t feel like putting pants back on and crawling out of your vehicle and stumbling through the cold and the dark in an unfamiliar campground just to find a sink. \ud83d\ude05\n\nBack to Portland (The Highlights)\n\nThe following week I had some business in Portland to attend to, so I hightailed it back to my old stomping grounds\u2026but now with a new perspective of being a traveler. It\u2019s always fun to pretend to be a tourist in your own town, and now I could really do it! A few highlights:\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Left: The first cherry blossoms have finally arrived! \nRight: Super fab loaded nachos by Bravos Tacos food cart\n \n \n A great day to ride my scooter along Rock Creek Trail on the westside\n \n \n \n \n Left: Screengrab from this video by Sarah Berkowitz \nRight: I found the exact same spot in real life! It's in Forest Park along Cornell Rd\n \n \n The latest Portland food hot spot: Flock\n \n \n \n \n Left: Flock is in the new Ritz-Carlton building \nIs this the bunny version of Deadmau5?I\u2019ll be real honest. I didn\u2019t totally dig Flock at first\u2026it felt very rich tourist-oriented and wasn\u2019t giving off those authentic \u201cKeep Portland Weird\u201d vibes. But then I read this article about the push for diversity in this new food hall and how all the vendors are BIPOC-owned, so that made me feel better.\n\nAnd finally\u2026\n\n\n \n \n A super burrito of some kind at my favorite Mexican restaurant in Portland (Hillsdale): Casa ColimaTip of the Northern Oregon Coast\n\nBecause the weather in Oregon in early March was pretty wet and cold-ish, it took me a while to start getting out to \u201cawesome places\u201d (not that Portland and there areas thereabouts aren\u2019t awesome!).\n\nOne major exception: Fort Stevens State Park.\n\nIt\u2019s located right at the tip of land west of Astoria and Youngs Bay and south of Baker Bay and Cape Disappointment on the Washington State side of the Columbia River. I regret that I only stayed here one night, because even with the wind and the rain, it was absolutely gorgeous.
