Game Boy Advance, e-Reader, and a pack of cards. These photos don't really convey the excitement of the moment, haha.Had a blast with Retro Dot Cards Series One for the Nintendo e-Reader from retrodotcards.com, created by Matt Greer.
That's right, new games printed on playing cards that can be scanned with a device from ~2002 using your Game Boy Advance or GameCube with Game Boy Player.
I think it's so cool that a dev community exists for these obscure devices, and that Matt has taken it so far as to write a bunch of games, produce them as cards, have them printed and packaged professionally, and sell them.
I have a nicely refurbished Game Boy Advance, but did not have an e-Reader at the time I learned of these, so I took to the e-Bay to find one. It actually took a while, and I had to pay more, to find an English version, as the original Japanese versions are more common. While you can buy Retro Dot Cards that work on any version of the reader (English, Japanese, or English-on-Japanese), if you plan to play other retro cards be aware that you need to match their language and region to your device or they won't work.
The cards and packaging from Retro Dot Cards were high quality and quirky. I enjoyed shuffling through them the first time. I cared less for trying to nicely fan them all out for a photo, above, because I wanted to get to playing them!
Each game (or app) is loaded with one to four "swipes" of a card. For example, Solitaire is a single card that you load by scanning one side, rotating the card 180 degrees, and scanning the other side. Exo Attack comes on two cards, for a total of four swipes through the reader.
The classics, like Solitaire, e-Snake, and Bomb Hunter (minesweeper) are minimalist, but well-made, colorful, and snappy to play. Exo Attack is a shoot-em-up with just one thing to shoot - the same boss with different behaviors - but it's also something of a provocation, with some quirky ship choices available. Speaking of quirky provocations: Franny Answers is like a combo Magic 8-ball and Tamagotchi with a cute and mysterious (or temperamental, or both) dog.
Some other absolute highlights include Scavenger Hunt (an achievements-based meta game!?), Exo Attack's code-based online leaderboards, and the old school instruction booklet online for each game.
The whole thing feels a bit like an invitation, too. To understand more about this old hardware, of course, but maybe also to make more things. Lurking in the footer of the Retro Dot Cards site is a Tools page with many e-Reader resources, including common sprites and backgrounds already present on the e-Reader that you can use in your own games and apps. Matt has also released the source code for e-Reader Solitaire, licensed MIT, and if that's not an invite I don't know what is.
Portlandia not only struck comedy gold, but also quickly established itself as one of the best sketch comedies in recent years. The show holds an impressive 81% audience score and 94% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Verne Gay wrote for Newsday that the series [leads] “Brownstein and Armisen move so effortlessly between characters, then execute their riffs, tics, styles and voices with such skilled abandon that before long this doesn’t seem like satire any longer but a fun house mirror reflection of intensely real people.”

The show also received high praise from sitcom great Jerry Seinfeld, who told Vulture in 2014, “It’s just too beyond brilliant…I think that’s the best comedy on TV right now, and it’s easily one of the best comedies of all time.”

The most mid-2010s Millennial cultural comedic touchstone I can think of, other than perhaps Girls, is Portlandia. And now you can put birds on things once more because The Dream of the (18)90s is Alive in #Portland (and also Netflix)!!!

I remain an unabashed fan of this sketch #comedy which took the world by storm in its heyday. As I once wrote a mere two months into 2020 before Covid hit, Portlandia had been a major factor in piquing my interest in this city and eventually moving here. And now, five years and one global pandemic later…well, I remain every bit the fan I was of both the show and the city which inspired it.

If you haven’t yet had the distinct pleasure of enjoying every single episode of this uproariously off-the-wall show and the myriad of kooky characters which pop up at alarming frequency…well then run, don’t walk over to your television set and press PLAY on Portlandia."

The Vision for W3C has been officially published as a ratified W3C Statement: https://www.w3.org/TR/2025/STMT-w3c-vision-20250729/
As one of the editors, along with Chris Wilson (@cwilso.com @cdub@mastodon.social), I’m both proud of this multi-year W3C Advisory Board (AB) effort, and grateful to everyone who contributed and gave feedback that helped improve the document.
Writing down and openly publishing our collective values and principles is an important step forward for W3C. We now have a shared reference to both guide our priorities and cite to help resolve differences in opinion (rather than having to appeal to authority).
The AB (@w3.org/wiki/AB @ab@w3c.social) has prioritized work on the Vision project for many years (https://www.w3.org/wiki/AB/Vision), and personally, co-leading this project during my time on the AB has been inspiring, challenging, and a source of many lessons learned. Lots more to share on all that. For now, happy to take a moment to celebrate this milestone.

I watched Shiny Happy People S2 about Teen Mania. I thought it was a good overview and done well. I think I’m going to write more about my experiences from my current perspective. Most of my writings on it are from early 2000s and a lot has changed. Ask me anything!

An IndieWeb meme, quoted from Tantek in the #indieweb-meta chat.
Just a friendly reminder that we don’t have to rank different levels of independence and there’s no One Way to Be Indie™. There are always tradeoffs with the web, but hopefully we are moving towards more individual control of the things we create. I think the IndieWeb community does a good job embodying that in the principles.

Gripe: I got a parking ticket for being within 20ft of a crosswalk. It was right in front of my place where I’ve parked for years and was not in the red zone. That doesn’t matter, though, because I learned the California “Daylighting” law (CVC 22500) does not require painted curbs to be cited. So, heads up out there.
I think the 20ft rule is good, but this implementation of it sucks. It went into effect January 1 and supposedly they had a grace period of 60 days where they issued warnings, but I never received one.
