        "text": "Short version: Adding the rel=canonical URL in your web pages is important for more than just search results. It can also impact link previews in other Google products like Docs.\n\nI recently ran into a weird edge case with link previews in Google Docs. A work client has an online directory and each profile has a unique permalink. Someone pasted their link in a Google Doc and clicked on it, which brought up a card preview showing the title. The title was showing the name of someone else\u2019s profile, though!\n\nMy first thought was something with Google\u2019s cache of the link preview, although the other person\u2019s name had never appeared at that link, so that didn\u2019t make much sense. I tried adding the link with a query string at the end: ?v=2026-10-02. With caching, that usually is seen as a unique URL and can avoid the cached response. Docs showed no preview initially, but after a couple minutes, it showed the same (incorrect) title.\n\nMy next thought was that these permalinks did not include a rel=canonical tag. The contents of the profile pages are largely similar except for the person\u2019s name and list of credentials. I didn\u2019t think that should be an issue, though, because the permalinks all contain a unique, 32-character identifier and no query strings. The links are very distinct and it did not make sense how Google would be picking another, seemingly random profile.\n\nI was pretty stumped at that point but decided to check Google Search Console. It reported \u201cPage is not indexed. Duplicate without user-selected canonical.\u201d It explained that since we had not specified the canonical URL, they had selected another permalink as the canonical. I went searching at Star Typewriters yesterday for a nice mid-century Adler Universal. As if he knew I was coming, Helmut had this lovely Royal/Triumph-Adler R 700 sitting right up front on the counter. It's essentially a Royal-badged version of the Adler Universal 200 which was manufactured under the Litton regime. It's a solid standard with some nice speed hiding under the hood. Helmut has added some nice touches of what he calls "lipstick" to zhuzh it up.

        "text": "Unexpected Game Revival\n\n\n\nA while back, there was this mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. It had a pretty decent story and the central conceit of the play mechanic was also pretty nice. The art and music was good for a mobile game. They had a gacha system that was reasonably generous, though as time went on and they continued to need to release new characters, the power creep became super real. It shut down back in 2024 (the Japanese servers went until 2025, but did eventually also close). Kind of a shame, it was pretty fun for what it was.\n\n\n\nWell, it\u2019s back, as Final Fantasy Resonance. They took the story and art and music and cleaned it all up, got rid of the gacha system (while adapting the \u201cvision\u201d system the game had introduced to explain the gacha system, since it\u2019s kind of central to the story), and fleshed out the world map and dungeons, and so now it\u2019s a full fledged standalone 2D-HD Final Fantasy title. I played through the demo (which is the entire first chapter of the game, so the save carries over when the full title comes out), and it was a really pleasant JRPG experience. So, y\u2019know, kudos to the development team for seeing the bones were good and not throwing them out, just because the online service had to close. Good work, and I hope you\u2019re rewarded for it.\n\n\n\nThe Block System Sucks\n\n\n\nWe recently migrated Simone\u2019s site, and it was the first opportunity I had to really dig into WordPress\u2019s block editor system. I can certainly see why they bothered creating it \u2013 you can do a fair bit of customization with just their built in site editor, without having to touch a line of HTML, PHP, CSS, or Javascript. If you want to make creating your own site more accessible, it makes a ton of sense. I also kind of hate it.\n\n\n\nI realize some of this may be me being a curmudgeon and having gotten used to the old system, but it all ends up feeling disjointed to me, where it\u2019s not very clear where you make a distinction between a template, a part, a pattern, or a page. And what\u2019s worse, is it\u2019s super non-obvious where any of those customizations live on your server (answer: in your database, and all the stuff like font and color changes are tied to that specific theme). If you started customizing a default theme and have now decided to turn it into either a child theme or its own theme, good luck getting those settings migrated (even though it\u2019s super easy to start messing with stuff without realizing you run the risk of screwing things up if the theme gets an update). \n\n\n\nSo let\u2019s say you want to export all those customizations you\u2019ve made. Where do you do it? It\u2019s not in the export settings, it\u2019s not an easy link on the main page of the site editor. Answer: it\u2019s on some editor pages if you go to a menu and look for an \u201cexport site\u201d link, which downloads a zip that you can then modify and manually upload. It\u2019s fucking stupid. Like, you\u2019re all too happy to add a link for resetting any style customizations you\u2019ve done on the style page, but not an \u201cexport/import styles\u201d link? Did you even stop to think about the user experience, or that people might want to back things up, or that by making it easy to import, export, and share styles, people would be more willing to experiment?\n\n\n\nI\u2019d been debating making a new theme for this site using the new block editor, but nah. As I was scrolling along yesterday, a post about the lovely Professional Elite typeface popped up in my feed on Reddit. It linked back to Tom Fasano's website, so I read the original there. I noticed a syndication icon at the bottom and stopped dead in my tracks! Had I run into a fully featured IndieWeb website in the wild?!? I peeked at the code and saw a Webmention endpoint hiding in there and nearly fell over. Webmention is a web standard that allows any website to talk directly to any other website as if they were social media peers on the same platform.  I immediately fired up my new-to-me 1959 Olympia SM3 which also has a Professional Elite No. 41 typeface to dash off a note to Tom and his typewriter. I posted it to my website as a typecast reply. But most importantly, my website sent a webmention (think @mention/notification) to Tom that I had replied to his post. Voila! My reply was in his comments section just moments later, as if by magic.  I've only done this a few times as there aren't many typewriter collector/typecasting bloggers out there who've added the technology to their sites yet, but this certainly opens up a new space for typewriter social networking by way of the web rather than just via post. The careful observer will also notice that because Tom syndicated his original post to Reddit and included a syndication link, he's getting replies from Reddit back into his website via Webmention using a service called Brid.gy. So if you want to type up a reply to his post, or even this one, and post it to the Reddit thread you can participate that way (if your website doesn't have the capability yet.)
