It is primarily intended to help you own your data by posting directly to your own site with Micropub. If your site does not support Micropub yet, you can still post to your indiebookclub profile.\n\nI\u2019m keeping the functionality simple to start. You can select a read status of \u201cWant to read,\u201d \u201cCurrently reading,\u201d or \u201cFinished reading.\u201d Then enter the title, authors (optional), and ISBN (optional). All posts on indiebookclub are public. If you are using Micropub, your posts will be linked to the canonical copy on your site.\n\nI have no plans to make this a complex social network, but I might add some features to help discover new books, like a page of newly-added books. There’s one thing I disagree with in your list, and one from the original, that I think is worth unpicking:
1. “Learn a bit of HTML.” I don’t think that should be necessary; a world where anyone who publishes is using HTML isn’t achievable or even necessarily desirable. And it creates a situation where people with technical skills have elite status over people that don’t.
2. “Make tools for yourself.” The premise is flawed. Made-up personas are certainly a bad idea, and creating software without having a user in mind is also terrible. But if we all just build for ourselves, the result is software for technical people. That’s kind of boring, but also counter to the mission of the indieweb as I see it. Instead, I’d propose: “Make tools for real people you care about.” That could be you; it could be your partner, or your family, or a community you want to support. It turns indieweb into an outward-facing, open endeavor instead of an introverted one, while staying true to the ideal of building for real people.

"text": "Using the HTML <input type=\"url\"> field is normally a good idea when you're asking the user to enter a URL. It doesn't make a huge difference on desktop browsers, but makes it a lot easier on mobile browsers. On iOS, when you've focused on a URL input field, the keyboard switches to a slightly different layout with different keys optimized for entering URLs.\n\nThe URL type keyboard on iOS provides easy access to special characters used in URLs.This is great for things like web sign-in where you're asking the user to enter their domain name to sign in. However, for some reason, browsers have implemented the URL validation a bit too strictly. If you don't enter a URL scheme, you'll get an error like the below if you try to submit the form.\n\nThis is pretty irritating because it forces the user to enter the URL scheme http:// or https://, which ironically on the special iOS URL keyboard, requires tapping the \"123\" button in order to get to the screen to type the \":\" character. It doesn't make a huge difference on desktop browsers, but makes it a lot easier on mobile browsers. However, for some reason, browsers have implemented the URL validation a bit too strictly. If you don't enter a URL scheme, you'll get an error like the below if you try to submit the form.</p>\n\n<img src=\"https://aperture-media.p3k.io/aaronparecki.com/f592f25e187293ba2303685f1433014faa906a9e55cd05bdd9859c6b77a62877.png\" alt=\"\" /><p>This is pretty irritating because it forces the user to enter the URL scheme <code>http://</code> or <code>https://</code>, which ironically on the special iOS URL keyboard, requires tapping the \"123\" button in order to get to the screen to type the \":\" character.
