"text": "The 2018 IndieWeb Summit\u00a0is now less than a week away, and I'd like to personally invite you, (yes, you!) to join us there.\nIWS kicks off with a pre-party on Monday evening at the Pine Street Market where you can enjoy some great handmade food and drinks. More importantly, you can meet and befriend some of the most earnest and clever folks I know when it comes to having fun being yourself on the web. You're likely to share stories about how awful silos like Facebook and Twitter have become, get inspired to build things you didn't even know you wanted to put on your website, and hatch schemes for what you'd love to learn, discuss, and build over the next two days.\nTuesday is a day of discussions and, while there will be some extremely great keynote talks\u00a0and a chance to show off your favorite feature on your own site, most of the day is reserved for discussions chosen by the folks who attend. I've seen sessions range from the extremely technical (build a Micropub server in 40 minutes) to the extremely personal (what is the meaning of identity on the web?). If you've got burning questions, you can volunteer to lead a session on a topic even (especially?) if you're not an expert. If you're not sure sit in on whatever feels interesting to you! There is no pressure to be clever.\nWednesday is all about creating. Take something you learned from Tuesday, or just something you've been meaning to do, and build it! Mai an dem Post!)\n\nAm 27.06. fand, im Rahmen des Karlsruher WordPress Meetups, eine kleine 15 Jahr feier statt. Lucas Radke (der leider keine eigene Webseite besitzt) hat zu diesem Anlass, die WordPress Highlights der letzte 15 Jahre\ufeff pr\u00e4sentiert. Ich fand die Idee ganz scharmant und habe die letzten Wochen mal recherchiert wie meine WordPress Geschichte seit 2002 aussieht.\n\n\n2002\n\nFast genau ein Jahr (29.05.2002) vor dem WordPress Fork hab ich das erste b2/cafelog (der Vorg\u00e4nger von WordPress) Weblog aufgesetzt.\n\npfefferle.org in 2003Damals hab ich die Entscheidung volgenderma\u00dfen begr\u00fcndet:\n\n\n\tDurch einen ungl\u00fccklichen Zufall kam ich an 50 mb Webspace (mit PHP und MySQL Datenbank) und die Dom\u00e4ne jsjsjsj.de (lange Geschichte). Wegen go\u00dfem Ideenmangel, viel Webspace und nachdem ich schon etwas PHP gelernt hatte beschlo\u00df ich einfach mal testweise ein phpNuke zu installieren\u2026\n\n\tNachdem der Webspace nach einem Jahr auslief, ich die jsjsjsj.de Dom\u00e4ne endlich wieder los war und erkannte das ein Content Management System etwas zu \u00fcberdimensional f\u00fcr eine Privatperson sei, habe ich mir so meine Gedanken gemacht, wie die neue Seite aussehen solle.. Irgendwann kam ich zuf\u00e4llig auf die Seite webfroot.co.nz und war begeistert von der Weblog Idee.\n\n\n2003\n\nAnders, als ich bisher angenommen habe, bin ich nicht 2003 auf WordPress umgestiegen, sondern erst ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter. Nichts desto trotz hab ich mich intensiv mit dem neuen Projekt besch\u00e4ftigt, immerhin war die Zukunft von b2 damals nicht wirklich klar!\n\n\n\tMy logging software hasn\u2019t been updated for months, and the main developer has disappeared, and I can only hope that he\u2019s okay.\n\tWhat to do? Well, Textpattern looks like everything I could ever want, but it doesn\u2019t look like it\u2019s going to be licensed under something politically I could agree with. Fortunately, b2/cafelog is GPL, which means that I could use the existing codebase to create a fork, integrating all the cool stuff that Michel would be working on right now if only he was around. The work would never be lost, as if I fell of the face of the planet a year from now, whatever code I made would be free to the world, and if someone else wanted to pick it up they could. I\u2019ve decided that this the course of action I\u2019d like to go in, now all I need is a name. What should it do? Well, it would be nice to have the flexibility of MovableType, the parsing of TextPattern, the hackability of b2, and the ease of setup of Blogger. Someday, right?\nMatt Mullenweg: The Blogging Software\u00a0Dilemma\n\n\n2004\n\nWordPress installiert!\n\n\n2005\n\n\n2005 hab ich mir die Domain notizblog.org registriert um ein neues WordPress Blog aufzusetzen.\n\n\n\n\tnotizBlog.org gibt es seit Mitte 2005 und ist mein privater Blog. Angefangen hat alles mit einem Blog auf pfefferle.org, daraus hat sich das Ettlinger Weblog \u201cMadLog\u201d entwickelt, welches recht schnell zu nem Gemeinschafts-Blog oder sowas in der Art geworden ist. Da ich aber in dem Bereich Neue Medien bzw. Online Medien studiere, dachte ich es sei nicht schlecht ein eigenes Weblog zum Testen und Ausprobieren zu besitzen.\n\t\nAu\u00dferdem wollte ich nat\u00fcrlich ein Teil vom Web2.0 sein \ud83d\ude00\n\n\n2006\n\nMein erster Versuch ein Theme zu bauen!\n\nMehr f\u00e4llt mir dazu nicht ein \ud83d\ude09\n\n2006 hab ich au\u00dferdem mein WordPress.org Profil angelegt um 2007 dann auch mein erstes Plugin zu ver\u00f6ffentlichen.\n\n\n2007\n\nMein erstes WordPress Plugin war Simple-CoComments. Es war/ist so \u201ekomplex\u201c, dass man problemlos den kompletten Quellcode hier ver\u00f6ffentlichen k\u00f6nnte \ud83d\ude42 \n\n\nMein erstes gro\u00dfes Projekt in 2007 war aber das APML Plugin, wor\u00fcber ich (das erste Mal) auch ein wenig Aufmerksamkeit in gleich zwei Communities bekam: WordPress & DataPortability.\n\n\n2008\n\n2008 hatte ich einfach nur total bock aufs bloggen. Im Durchschnitt kam ich auf 0,7 Artikel pro Tag, das sind derzeit 37% aller bisherigen Artikel!\n\n2009\n\n2009 entstand das ActivityStreams Plugin f\u00fcr WordPress, was dann auch der Start zu den diversen OStatus Plugins und meiner arbeit an dem OStatus Plugin war.\n\n2010\n\nIm Februar 2010 kam Pepijn auf mich zu, ob ich ihn nicht bei der Entwicklung eines OStatus Plugins f\u00fcr WordPress unterst\u00fctzen wolle\u2026\n\n\nAre you pfefferle on WordPress.org?\n\nTogether with a few other individuals I'm working on a distributed social network plugin for WordPress.\nI've been following the social-discuss mailing list for a while, and it seems to me that OStatus is considered a good candidate for a protocol.\n\nAccording to this page, OStatus is basically a collection of extensions to Atom.\nhttp://status.net/wiki/OStatus\n\nSince you are the author of both an Activity Streams plugin an a Portable Contacts plugin -- among a few other interesting and probably related plugins -- I would like to inform you about our efforts.\n\nMaybe we could share some code, or even join forces?\n\nGroeten,\nPepijn de Vos\n\n\nDie Arbeit am OStatus-Plugin hat bisher am meisten Spa\u00df gemacht! Von allen Plugins, ist es das einzige, das ohne gro\u00dfe \u00c4nderungen immer noch funktioniert. Mittlerweile habe ich das Plugin mehr oder weniger \u00fcbernommen, bzw. bin ich aktuell der einzige aktive Maintainer.\n\nDas Besondere an dem Plugin sind die 100.000 Installationen, die es zu einem der Top 100 Plugins auf WordPress.org machen!\n\n\n2012\n\nMein erstes ernstzunehmendes Theme: SemPress!\n\nI\u2019ve made a WordPress Theme\u2026 kind of\u2026\n\n2013\n\nEin Jahr sp\u00e4ter hat es SemPress dann in das offizielle Theme Directory von WordPress.com geschafft!\n\nSemPress auf WordPress.com\n\n2014\n\n2014 habe ich das OStatus Plugin geklont und einen ersten Prototypen eines IndieWeb Plugins ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Das IndieWeb Plugin ist bis heute eine Art Installer, der User bei der Installation und Einrichtung der verschiedenen IndieWeb-Plugins unterst\u00fctzen soll. Mittlerweile ist die IndieWeb WordPress Community gut gewachsen und seit letztem Jahr ist das Plugin Teil des offiziellen IndieWeb-Repos, in der Hoffnung, dass es dort mehr Pflege bekommt.\n\n2015\n\nMeine erste \u201eCore Contribution\u201c. F\u00fcr WordPress 4.4 habe ich Pascal Birchler bei der Entwicklung des WordPress oEmbed Providers geholfen.\n\nNew Embeds Feature in WordPress 4.4\n\n2016\n\nMein erstes WordCamp und mein erster Vortrag auf einem solchen\ufeff. Thema war das IndieWeb\u2026 Was auch sonst \ud83d\ude09\n\n\n\n\tSoziale Netzwerke haben meistens nur eine begrenzte Lebenszeit. Posterous wurde von Twitter gekauft und eingestellt, Google Buzz durch Google Plus ersetzt und MySpace hat seine Blogging-Plattform geschlossen. Alleine mit Geocities wurden 2009 knapp 23 Millionen Seiten unwiderruflich vom Netz genommen. Jeder dieser Schritte ist mit einem Datenverlust verbunden. Die IndieWeb Bewegung versucht diesem Trend entgegen zu wirken. Inhalte werden nur noch auf der eigenen Seite ver\u00f6ffentlicht und erst dann \u00fcber die Socialen Netzwerke geteilt. Aber nicht nur Artikel, sondern auch Bilder, Videos und Kommentare. WordPress bietet ideale Voraussetzungen um sich unabh\u00e4ngig von den sozialen Medien zu machen und dennoch dessen Vorteile und Reichweite zu nutzen. Welche M\u00f6glichkeiten gibt es aktuell, um Inhalte automatisch zu teilen oder Reaktionen im Netz einzusammeln und wie l\u00e4sst sich mit WordPress eine Art dezentrales Social Network bauen.\n\n\n2017\n\nIch bin gro\u00dfer Fan von Gutenberg, DEM neuen Editor von WordPress, und arbeite seit 2017 daran, mein aktuelles Theme ZenPress m\u00f6glichst kompatibel zu machen.\n\n2018\n\n2018 war ich das erste mal auf einem WordPress-Meetup und bei meinem ersten Hackathon zum Thema WordPress\ufeff.\n\n\n\u2026\n\nEs hat spa\u00df gemacht, die alten Sachen heraus zu kramen \ud83d\ude42\n\nAuf die n\u00e4chsten 15 16 Jahre!",

Wegen go\u00dfem Ideenmangel, viel Webspace und nachdem ich schon etwas PHP gelernt hatte beschlo\u00df ich einfach mal testweise ein <a href=\"https://web.archive.org/web/20031225023627/http://www.phpnuke.org/\">phpNuke</a> zu installieren\u2026<br /></p>\n\t<p>Nachdem der Webspace nach einem Jahr auslief, ich die jsjsjsj.de Dom\u00e4ne endlich wieder los war und erkannte das ein Content Management System etwas zu \u00fcberdimensional f\u00fcr eine Privatperson sei, habe ich mir so meine Gedanken gemacht, wie die neue Seite aussehen solle.. Irgendwann kam ich zuf\u00e4llig auf die Seite <a href=\"https://web.archive.org/web/20031225023627/http://www.webfroot.co.nz/\">webfroot.co.nz</a> und war begeistert von der Weblog Idee.</p>\n</blockquote>\n\n<h2>2003</h2>\n\n<p>Anders, als ich bisher angenommen habe, bin ich nicht 2003 auf WordPress umgestiegen, sondern erst ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter. Es war/ist so \u201ekomplex\u201c, dass man problemlos den kompletten Quellcode hier ver\u00f6ffentlichen k\u00f6nnte \ud83d\ude42 <br /></p>\n\n<p>Mein erstes gro\u00dfes Projekt in 2007 war aber das <a href=\"https://notiz.blog/projects/apml-for-wordpress/\">APML Plugin</a>, wor\u00fcber ich (das erste Mal) auch ein wenig Aufmerksamkeit in gleich zwei Communities bekam: <a href=\"https://notiz.blog/tag/apml+wordpress/\">WordPress</a> & <a href=\"https://groups.google.com/d/topic/apml-public/6ZWW1AtVXtg/discussion\">DataPortability</a>.<br /></p>\n\n<h2>2008</h2>\n\n<p>2008 hatte ich einfach nur total bock aufs bloggen. Das <em>IndieWeb Plugin</em> ist bis heute eine Art Installer, der User bei der Installation und Einrichtung der verschiedenen <a href=\"https://github.com/orgs/indieweb/teams/wordpress/repositories\">IndieWeb-Plugins</a> unterst\u00fctzen soll. Mittlerweile ist die <a href=\"https://github.com/orgs/indieweb/teams/wordpress/members\"><em>IndieWeb WordPress Community</em></a> gut gewachsen und seit letztem Jahr ist das Plugin Teil des offiziellen IndieWeb-Repos, in der Hoffnung, dass es dort mehr Pflege bekommt.</p>\n\n<h2>2015</h2>\n\n<p>Meine erste \u201eCore Contribution\u201c. F\u00fcr <a href=\"https://wordpress.org/news/2015/12/clifford/\">WordPress 4.4</a> habe ich <a href=\"https://pascalbirchler.com/\">Pascal Birchler</a> bei der Entwicklung des WordPress oEmbed Providers geholfen.</p>\n\n<blockquote><a href=\"https://make.wordpress.org/core/2015/10/28/new-embeds-feature-in-wordpress-4-4/\">New Embeds Feature in WordPress 4.4</a></blockquote>\n\n<h2>2016</h2>\n\n<p>Mein erstes WordCamp und mein erster <a href=\"https://github.com/pfefferle/wcfra-2016-talk\">Vortrag auf einem solchen\ufeff</a>. Thema war das <em>IndieWeb</em>\u2026 Was auch sonst \ud83d\ude09<br /></p>\n\n<blockquote>\n\t<p>Soziale Netzwerke haben meistens nur eine begrenzte Lebenszeit. Posterous wurde von Twitter gekauft und eingestellt, Google Buzz durch Google Plus ersetzt und MySpace hat seine Blogging-Plattform geschlossen. Alleine mit Geocities wurden 2009 knapp 23 Millionen Seiten unwiderruflich vom Netz genommen. Jeder dieser Schritte ist mit einem Datenverlust verbunden. Die IndieWeb Bewegung versucht diesem Trend entgegen zu wirken. Inhalte werden nur noch auf der eigenen Seite ver\u00f6ffentlicht und erst dann \u00fcber die Socialen Netzwerke geteilt. Aber nicht nur Artikel, sondern auch Bilder, Videos und Kommentare. WordPress bietet ideale Voraussetzungen um sich unabh\u00e4ngig von den sozialen Medien zu machen und dennoch dessen Vorteile und Reichweite zu nutzen. Continuing my baby steps towards equipping Grav, which runs this, my main website, with a Micropub endpoint, it took me almost half a day to remember where I had got to. And about ten minutes to undo all my good work. Like the proverbial snail, though, I am now a little bit closer than I was, even if I had to drop down a bit to get here. And i (re)learned two important lessons: git; and small steps.

Mildred Marianne asked How do you define #IndieWeb? and a couple of us weighed in. My own brief answer concluded "More a state of mind than a thing, I'd say" but Chris Aldrich went into a lot more detail. His piece is well worth checking out in detail, as it offers a bird's eye view of all the different things the IndieWeb is and could be. I might take issue with singling out the country of America for his metaphor as being a tad parochial, but one could choose any reasonably democratic place instead.
I want to respond to a little thing. In questioning the closed nature of the big silos, Chris asks parenthetically: Would you use your phone to only call friends who use AT&T?

"text": "Baltimore's first Homebrew Website Club of June met at the Digital Harbor Foundation Tech Center on June 13th!\n \n\nHere are some notes from the \"broadcast\" portion of the meetup:\n\n derekfields.is \u2014 Thinking about ESP8266 + WebAR to make, e.g. a painting with AR overlays in mobile browsers. Working on CSS Grid stuff for his site, now. Trying to be consistent.\n \n\n\n jonathanprozzi.net \u2014 Mainly been working on stuff for DHF, but it overlaps w/ personal projects. Working on a \"headless WordPress\" setup as a data source for a Gatsby or Next static site that can be taken to schools w/ super slow internet. Been learning how to use Gatsby \u2013 the GraphQL queries for WordPress have been tricky. Got it working on his own site first, then managed to get a handle on how to pull lessons for specific courses from the set of all courses. Now digging into more GraphQL (like debugging w/ GraphiQL) and issues like differences in how WordPress handles whitespace (processing newlines into paragraph and break tags) vs stuffing the content into a React component (no special whitespace processing by default). For personal stuff, feels like Gatsby + headless WP is too heavy. Interested in an IndieWeb-starter version of the Gatsby starter site, which doesn't even have semantic HTML at the moment. Also looking into WordPress + Next... next, because it seems simpler.\n \n\n\n dariusmccoy.com \u2014 Went to NOMCON\u00a0and helped build the We the Rosies sculpture. Will be working on a new project for DHF for managing 3D Print Shop.\n \n\nmartymcgui.re\u00a0\u2014 Installed grant.codes' PostrChild plugin for Chrome.
