For example, Boston is possibly starting an IndieWeb Meetup (https://twitter.com/Dries/status/1049071136791826437) and some virtual IndieWeb meetups (https://twitter.com/jgmac1106/status/1049785385482641409)
Currently, existing meetups will continue to be called HWC as to not confuse previous attendees. New meetups have the option to call themselves IndieWeb meetup or HWC. Either way it gets included in the events calendar (https://indieweb.org/events/2018-10-10-homebrew-website-club#Vancouver) Notice the only reason Vancouver is linked to another page here is because it’s meeting on a Tuesday rather than Wednesday which is the usual. Both IndieWeb meetups and HWC will be included in the weekly newsletter, and the routine podcasts (This Week in the IndieWeb Audio Edition and My Url Is). I don’t foresee any visitors being confused by it being called an IndieWeb meetup, in fact, I think you might have more visitors because people who are familiar with IndieWeb but NOT the HWC name will still be interested in attending.

Sounds like a great time! Glad you all had fun! Also, don’t feel pressure to rename it to Homebrew Website Club. At the last Organizers Meetup, IndieWeb Meetup was actually discussed as a likely possible rebranding of HWC, so you all might just be ahead of the curve! When I relaunch my local meetup, I’ll be calling it IndieWeb Meetup as well!

I learned a lot helping organize IndieWebCamp Austin last year. We’re doing it again in early 2019. Planning is underway now with possible dates on the wiki.

Super excited!! 🎉🎉 This is something I’ve actually been thinking about since July and it just took some time to plan, get the equipment and the tech workflows and decide to actually do it! And this first episode with @aaronpk was actually recorded almost two months ago as a test episode. It’s just been sitting around waiting to be released once I had a great list of guests to go after him

Thanks! I definitely am excited about having more IndieWeb podcasts. The component that I thought was important was to make sure we had a variety of “types” of IndieWeb podcasts. There’s already a microcast @aaronpk, newscast @schmarty, long tech podcast @dshanske and @c so hopefully a guest podcast will help add to the variety and help create more opportunity for new voices in the IndieWeb community 🙂

Launched a new podcast this week! You can find the first episode on the site or by following @MyURLIs. Each episode is <30 minutes and features a different person on the IndieWeb. This week was @aaronpk and I’ve got more really interesting guests on the way!

This is a rather beautiful piece of writing by Tom (especially the William Gibson bit at the end). This got me right in the feels:
Web 2.0 really, truly, is over. The public APIs, feeds to be consumed in a platform of your choice, services that had value beyond their own walls, mashups that merged content and services into new things… have all been replaced with heavyweight websites to ensure a consistent, single experience, no out-of-context content, and maximising the views of advertising. That’s it: back to single-serving websites for single-serving use cases.
A shame. A thing I had always loved about the internet was its juxtapositions, the way it supported so many use-cases all at once. At its heart, a fundamental one: it was a medium which you could both read and write to. From that flow others: it’s not only work and play that coexisted on it, but the real and the fictional; the useful and the useless; the human and the machine.

"text": "Baltimore's first Homebrew Website Club of October met at the Digital Harbor Foundation Tech Center on October 3rd.\nHere are some notes from the \"broadcast\" portion of the meetup:\n\n jonathanprozzi.net \u2014 No updates since last time for his personal site. Was burned out after a lot of frustration with Gatsby + WordPress headless. Got to the point of feeling helpless and like he couldn't figure out how to progress. Started porting to Next.js and has some renewed energy because he is making progress and enjoying it.\n \n\n\n martymcgui.re \u2014 Went to IndieWebCamp NYC! Didn't do anything new for his site, but did manage to write a post full of project ideas that he came away with. Really interested in using free services like Glitch (for server-side processing), Neocities (static file hosting), and Cloudinary (make thumbnail images from those giant originals) to make IndieWeb building blocks that people without coding experience could combine to make their own sites. Currently thinking of building a Micropub Media Endpoint that handles dynamic image resizing to see how this approach works.\n \n\nOther discussion:\nIdeas from the IndieWebCamp NYC Organizer's meeting about \"messaging\" for Homebrew Website Clubs. The name is often confusing or off-putting for newcomers, and oddly self-selecting for those that \"get it\". Thinking about rebranding to \"Indie Web Meetup\" \u2013 evokes \"independent web\" and a meetup is more inviting than a \"club\" which might have membership requirements.\n Talked a lot about how many folks who come to HWC are WordPress users and how we might do better by them if we made it more clear that we are here to help them power up their WordPress sites.\n Or even go a step further and simply offer to get people started with or improve their existing personal site. If we can get people to the meetups, no matter the skill level, we can get them started: sign-up for micro.blog to get going right away, put a simple static HTML page up on glitch or GitHub, dive into WordPress, etc.\n First steps may be to think of it more like an open hours help desk. The \"price\" of getting help can be to write up all the steps followed, as a way of documenting steps for future folks who might need it. The goal would be to have folks come and actually leave with something accomplished.\n \n Also talked about difficulties with estimating the limitations of tools before you invest a bunch of time in learning to use it and understand it deeply. Jonathan's experience with Gatsby was a prime example \u2013 ultimately he needed it to do something it didn't support well, but it took a lot of frustration to find out that the issue was with the tool being a bad fit for the problem.\n \n\nLeft-to-right: martymcgui.re, jonathanprozzi.net\n This ended up being a very organizer-y meta meeting. It was nice to be able to check in with ourselves about this meetup and its future. We are excited to continue to evolve! We look forward to seeing you at our next meetup on Tuesday, October 16th at 7:30pm!",
