        "text": "It\u2019s that time of year again! No, not awards season\u2026Bridgy stats time!\nLooking at the graphs, the elephant in the room is clearly the Facebook shutdown. It was Bridgy\u2019s second largest silo, numbering 1477 users when we were forced to disable it on August 1. Bittersweet.\nOn the plus side, I rearchitected in March and moved polling to a separate background service, which helped App Engine\u2019s scheduler handle our workload much better. We now consistently run on one backend instance and one frontend instance, which brings costs down from $70-100/month to a very predictable $35-40. Winning!\nLet\u2019s go to the numbers. Since launch in December 2013: 3793 users, 1.22M webmentions sent successfully to almost 2000 unique domains, 12.8M responses handled (likes, comments etc), 42K POSSEs published, total cost back down to ~$.01/user/month (from ~$.02 a year ago).\nData,\nmethodology,\npreviously,\npreviously,\npreviously,\npreviously.",

        "text": "Baltimore's second Homebrew Website Club of November met at the Digital Harbor Foundation Tech Center on November 27th.\nHere are some notes from the \"broadcast\" portion of the meetup:\n\n  jonathanprozzi.net \u2014 Spent quiet writing hour writing a post about his 2018 and 2019 commitments! He wants to finish some personal writing tasks, capture some of the things he's been working on recently, and do some development.\n  \n\n\n  rhearamakrishnan.com \u2014 Edited a poem during our writing time. Nice! Been reflecting on HWC and how it allowed her to use the web and her website to focus and promote her work and writing. Has a lot of new material to edit together before publishing. Just went to an intensive writing workshop in New York and generated a lot of new writing to work through.\n  \n\n\n  Rosco \u2014 Working on a browser-based game for students at DHF to learn programming concepts. Thinking about starting with physical versions of the game first, maybe translating to the web later. \n  \n\n\n  ashturner.net \u2014 Also working the programming tutorials and experiences for teaching computing concepts. Arrays and for-loops are particularly tricky for beginners. Ash discussed some inspirational single-purpose websites for teaching concepts, like The Be\u0301zier Game, and KERNTYPE. Has a personal website built on Adobe Portfolio, but interested in moving off of that because she doesn't want to pay for Creative Cloud anymore.\n  \n\n\n  martymcgui.re \u2014 Doing lots of unseen plumbing work on his site, nearly read to flip over from a Jekyll-powered site to a Hugo-powered site. It's likely that no one will notice the difference! Also been playing a lot with iOS Shortcuts (formerly Workflow) and built a Workflow to take an iOS Live Photo, turn it into an animated GIF, turn that into a looping video, and post the video to his site. Here's an example post. Being able to do this helps him feel less anxious about having Live Photos on his phone and feeling like they're inaccessible.\n  \n\n\n  derekfields.is \u2014 Been going to conferences and talking to companies about jobs. Also working on his LED backpack for cyclists startup. Accelerometer detects braking, turning. Been playing with WebUSB a bit, like with gamepad controllers.\n  \n\nOther discussion:\nCommitments to complete before 2019\n  GitHub Pages for hosting. Rhea built her site there, using some tutorials from Codecademy.         "text": "2018 is drawing to a close and wow, what a year. It feels like it has, by turns, both crawled and raced by on its way. Tonight I'm at my final Homebrew Website Club as an organizer before the moving truck comes tomorrow and we begin our transfer to NYC. If all goes well we should be living our lives there by this time next week!\nEven amidst this turmoil, the IndieWeb community, and Homebrew Website Club in general, has been helping me periodically bring my focus back to the things I want to work on for my personal site. Each year, community members challenge themselves to deliver something new to their site by the end of the year, and there are a lot of commitments already up.\nMy site is currently built with the static site generator Jekyll. As I'd added posts and features, Jekyll builds started taking 1 to 2 minutes or more. This became excruciating for simple edits or wanting to quickly syndicate a post from my site to Twitter or Facebook.\u00a0 So, in the last year (or more!) I've been refactoring my site and porting over my templates to Hugo, a very fast static site generator written in Go.\n\n  I think the last piece I am missing before launching is some updates to my Micropub endpoint to create and edit posts in Hugo-specific locations and with Hugo-specific metadata (seriously, why can't Go parse ISO 8601 dates without a seconds field?).\n  \n\nSo, I am committed to finish putting the pieces together and relaunch my site on Hugo before 2019-01-01.\nHow will you know that I've finished it? I'll have to tell you! Because, ideally, the site should look and work the same as before, with a few improvements in markup and a couple of non-obvious new archive pages.\n\n  Trust me, I'll let y'all know here on this site!",

        "text": "2018 is drawing to a close and wow, what a year. It feels like it has, by turns, both crawled and raced by on its way. Tonight I'm at my final Homebrew Website Club as an organizer before the moving truck comes tomorrow and we begin our transfer to NYC. If all goes well we should be living our lives there by this time next week!\nEven amidst this turmoil, the IndieWeb community, and Homebrew Website Club in general, has been helping me periodically bring my focus back to the things I want to work on for my personal site. Each year, community members challenge themselves to deliver something new to their site by the end of the year, and there are a lot of commitments already up.\nMy site is currently built with the static site generator Jekyll. As I'd added posts and features, Jekyll builds started taking 1 to 2 minutes or more. This became excruciating for simple edits or wanting to quickly syndicate a post from my site to Twitter or Facebook.\u00a0 So, in the last year (or more!) I've been refactoring my site and porting over my templates to Hugo, a very fast static site generator written in Go.\n\n  I think the last piece I am missing before launching is some updates to my Micropub endpoint to create and edit posts in Hugo-specific locations and with Hugo-specific metadata (seriously, why can't Go parse ISO 8601 dates without a seconds field?).\n  \n\nSo, I am committed to finish putting the pieces together and relaunch my site on Hugo before 2019-01-01.\nHow will you know that I've finished it? A tale of two principles.\n\nPreparing a conference talk. The four steps I took in putting together a presentation.\n\nPrototypes and production. Don\u2019t build prototypes with a production mindset. Don\u2019t release prototype code into production.\nA lot of my writing in 2018 was on technical topics\u2014front-end development, service workers, and so on\u2014but I should really make more of an effort to write about a wider range of topics. I always like when Zeldman writes about his glamourous life. Maybe in 2019 I\u2019ll spend more time letting you know what I had for lunch.\n\nI really enjoy writing words on this website. I\u2019ve had it stored in Pocket for far too long. I\u2019m glad I took the time this morning while drinking my coffee to read it. It is very good. It includes many things I think about most; the open web, how tech giants are so important in what the future will look like, and what we can do to mitigate the downsides of them owning the future.</p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http://cdevroe.com/2011/05/17/bitcoin/\">Since 2011</a>, I\u2019ve been asked about Bitcoin and blockchain from time-to-time. <a href=\"http://cdevroe.com/2017/12/13/please-bitcoin-party-no/\">My advice to people</a> (including myself) is to recommend people do their own research.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been buying BTC lately. Partly because the price is rather low at the moment but also partly because I have a completely different goal in 2019. I\u2019m not prospecting. If my wallet\u2019s value appreciates, excellent. If it doesn\u2019t, I don\u2019t care. My goal in 2019 is to use crypto currency (likely Bitcoin or Ether?) to pay for some every day mundane things. My goal is to transact the equivalent of around $10,000 USD in some form of crypto during the course of the year. That could be accepting crypto or spending crypto. It is my hope that by not being a <a href=\"https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hodl\">hodlr</a>, and also not trying to get rich, that I will help the crypto financial ecosystem in some small way.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going back to Johnson\u2019s piece. He writes a lot about the open web and the open protocols that are in place and how on top of those certain companies own things like our identity. He doesn\u2019t quite go so far as to mention <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/Category:building-blocks\">the Building Blocks of the indie web</a> but I wish he had. But I think we\u2019re starting to see decentralization on many fronts happen. I think 2018 was a big year for this and I think the shift is only going go accelerate.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not going to make any predictions specifically for 2019 since I believe it will take longer than that.         "text": "For the past week or so, I've been getting a series of Pingbacks from a spam blog that reposts a blog post a couple times a day as a new post each time. It's up to about 220 copies of the post, each one having sent me a Pingback, and each one showing up in my reader as a notification, which also causes it to be sent to my phone.\n\n  Since I use webmention.io to handle my incoming Webmentions (and Pingbacks), this would be the best place to block the site, rather than filtering it out in my reader or my website.\u00a0\nWebmention.io previously had no way to actually completely block a domain. As Webmentions have started growing in popularity, it's become obvious that we need more tools to combat spam and abuse. While this site was actually sending me Pingbacks, the same applies to Webmentions.\nToday I added a new feature to webmention.io to allow people to entirely block a domain, and delete any webmentions received from that domain.\u00a0\n\n  From the dashboard, you can click the \"X\" on any recent webmention, or you can paste a URL from one you've received in the past. You'll be taken to this screen where you can either delete just the one webmention, or entirely block the domain.\nOnce you've blocked the domain, it will show up in your blocklists page!\n\n  I hope this helps others keep out spam as well! I'm sure looking forward to never seeing that notification on my phone again!",
