As a result we have stopped wasting time with creating Facebook events, and linking people to a source of negative social media distractions.

The Micro.blog experience and a few thoughts on the open web (Beardy Guy Musings)
I write this and mull it over from the perspective of a creator and as a longer-term user of the “old web”. I have, at least, a basic grasp of the ideal (and importance of) the open web, ownership and access. I write it as someone frustrated with the nastiness of the business practices of the corporate entities that own the big social media as well as the lack of moderation on those sites making them potentially dangerous places. But even amongst the relatively tech fluent (and likely, financially affluent) community of tech/apple oriented users that I follow on Twitter, there is little impulse to move to alternatives such as Micro.blog or Mastodon. I’ve seen evidence of an almost complete lack of interest.
As one of those "old web" guys who has been blogging for almost two decades, I understand this anguish over the open web. I've seen the rise and fall of alternative like app.net and despite what others may think, micro.blog's success isn't ensured. The lack of diversity, both cultural and economic, is perhaps why the "relatively tech fluent (and likely, financially affluent) community of tech/apple oriented users" ignore micro.blog. It's one of the reasons why, despite having backed the Kickstarter project, I chose to let my hosted micro.blog lapse and use micro.blog more like Twitter.
I've documented my issues in several blog posts.
I prefer the approach advocated by the IndieWeb and have also written about the issue of discovery for independent blogs who don't use social media.

Not 100% sure why (as it turns out that the logs didn't persist) but turns out that my webserver ( https://caddyserver.com/ ) hadn't been configured to restart post-boot, but all the other services had. Woops! Glad I didn't have a tonne of content to push, but it was a bit worrying having no way to resolve it, as I had no laptop to SSH and diagnose.

"text": "I have reached the final post for National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) 2019!\n\nI am surprised how easily the writing flowed this month. It was nice to get back in a groove. Many times I just started writing without a firm idea and I was pleased with most of the results. That\u2019s a good reminder for an overthinker like me. I didn\u2019t complete NaBloPoMo 2013 and subsequent 100 words challenge partly due to overthinking.\n\nI feel like some of the posts served as a good intro that I can expand upon later. I want to write more about refugees and asylum, for example. Having those posts out there will help when I\u2019m looking through the archives for inspiration. I may try to stick to a more regular posting schedule now. Once every two weeks seems like a reasonable starting point.\n\nNow on to December! There is the annual IndieWeb Challenge where we collectively try to ship something each day that benefits the community. I would like to get a new version of the PHP microformats parser released as part of that. There is also the new year commitments. I wrote about mine yesterday.\n\nThanks for reading along and commenting this month!",

"text": "I decided in late October that I want to be off Facebook by the new year. I think the company is awful for a lot of reasons. At that time, the most recent reasons were Zuck saying Facebook wouldn\u2019t prohibit political ads with outright lies in them. They also took down some pro-vaccine ads while letting anti-vax conspiracies through. Cool. Cool cool cool.\n\nFor the last several years I have primarily used Facebook for the private groups and to share some of my blog posts. At this point there is only one private group that I will really miss. Hopefully I can help convince them to move to another platform like a private Discourse forum, though. As for blog posts, well, I think most people who want to read my stuff know where to find me.\n\nI am starting to archive my Facebook posts on my site and delete the originals, so my Facebook timeline will dwindle. In the next week or so I will have a signup form for people who want to get weekly/monthly digest emails of my posts, photos, and whatnot. I will still occasionally need a Facebook developer account for work. I haven\u2019t decided if I\u2019ll use my current account for that or create a new one. Either way, I don\u2019t intend for the account to have friends or interact.\n\nI believe the web worked pretty well before Facebook and can continue without it. There are many good innovations social sites like Facebook have introduced, but I believe those can be implemented on the open web, giving people more control of their identity and content. That\u2019s why I love the indieweb community.",

"text": "I just finished adding OPML export to Dobrado, a.k.a how to get your follow list out of a reader. I've been trying to switch my daily reading habits from my old account on unicyclic.com, to my new website at mblaney.xyz, but the new way of reading is via a Microsub client which has been quite buggy up until now!\n\n\nI've been using both every day for a few weeks to get the kinks out of the new code, and I'm pretty happy with it. The only thing that was missing was that I hadn't bothered following all the same feeds again, I decided to leave that until I could export them properly from my old account and import them to the new website.\n\n\nAround the same time I was chatting with Chris, who has a mammoth following page with links to his OPML files. He recently had a go at importing them into unicyclic.com, which didn't get very far, but this was good timing as I was already working on it. There are still a few issues with network requests timing out but I think it's much better.\n\n\nDobrado now exports a similar OPML file to what Chris has created, which groups feeds by category. The import function now checks for categories and will use them to create Microsub channels as required.",
