I don't consider companies like #adobe or Hasbro as anything other than gigantic corporate diseases, so far removed from their founding vision that they've become a behemoth better off slain.

@deerbard how about having a personal website, or use some place in the #fediverse (like mastodon.art or some #pixelfed instance) to call home to store your art ?
We have room at the #cipherbliss instance i manage, and i have quite a lof of history in drawing stuff.
You would be welcome here. Beware, we have lot of French speaking people around :D but they are lovely

Blogging is kinda social

I’ve always liked the idea of a CMS-agnostic (!) Microsub/Micropub client, but I’d want to host it myself, because what if it goes down, and so on. But I’d then have to host the Microsub server, too.

This way, I’ve only ever got to keep one (!) app running, one I was running already—my own site! (How’s that for sticking it to 3rd-party platforms?) Hooray

Hey, I'm research for a personal project I'm hoping to do this year. What is everyone favourite site from the years 2000 - 2013ish.
Personally I want study Y2K and Frutiger Aero aesthetics but all are welcome. Boosts are appreciated. I'll Start with some of my favs. Good old newgrounds, ytv, and the old xgen and miniclip sites to name a few.

@jeremy perhaps, although I feel like blogs and comments need to be more dynamic. Integrating #ActivityPub + other #IndieWeb elements could be a nice way to add a little more connectivity between everything.

@tantek.com I really like the phone company comparison for choosing a domain registrar... It's the most finicky part of #IndieWeb , unfortunately :/

I'm streaming working on my site again today.

If you're interested in Next.js the #IndieWeb, or watching me code, come say hi.

I think I need to do an #indieweb #mastodon #introduction for myself - I'm a #webdev, #guitarist (messing around with #synths and #keys lately too), and have a background in #environmental studies.

I worked as a field #biotech combating #invasiveSpecies before I got tired of the seasonal job hunt and switched to a childhood passion of tinkering with computers.

Lately I've been trying to combine all of my passions - mainly by way of #FOSS, such as #iNaturalist and #audacity.

Say hi!

If you can’t play with horizontal scrolling on your personal home page, where can you? #CSS #indieweb https://kevinyank.com/

Choosing a domain name is a key step toward getting your own #IndieWeb site. Like choosing an account name (chat, email, Mastodon) but global, feels more personal, and like more of a commitment. Six tips:

1. Use some form of your name (given & family), so you have a chance of having your site and posts show up when people search for you
2. Or a made-up nickname that fits you now and into the future
3. Something easily memorable, speakable, & spellable to better tell people in-person or on the phone (i.e. avoid "cute" or "weird" spellings like dropping vowels)
4. Use https://domai.nr/ to quickly try variants
5. Try to get a .com .net or .org, which are still seen as more legitimate. A .me is ok, as is your country/region (e.g. .us .uk .eu etc. see https://indieweb.org/ccTLD for more examples)
6. Shorter is better for many reasons: https://indieweb.org/short-domains

Once you find an available name, choose a domain registrar, which is like choosing a phone company, except there are more of them. Some recommendations: https://indieweb.org/personal-domain#Domain_Registrars

Got questions, or want more tips & opinions?

Ask in https://chat.indieweb.org/ — you’ll get a lot of sympathy & support as nearly everyone there has gone through this process, and many are eager to share their experiences to make it easier for new folks.

https://indieweb.org/naming is hard, it’s ok to ask for help.

While diving ever deeper into the #yesterweb / #indieweb and the #fediverse and having just rediscovered #knoppix with its #compiz composer and its own style i realise that we -while having gained power- have lost one thing for a long time in the computer hobby: FUN

Creating things not to promote oneself or build a marketable portfolio but just because it can be done and doing could be fun.

I am glad to have (re-) discovered that.

"would you like some cancer and tracking with your website"

- every time a damn site full of text won't load on my crummy third world pre-paid internet SIM

it should just be text! 2023 on the web is hell.

Content warning: capitalism, bad design, death

I’m so old, I was already alive back in the days when #indieWeb folks would cite #Google products as examples of good #UX.

Well, there only was one product, of course, a web page with a logo, an input field and two buttons.

I’m not an optimist myself, and thought it bad design to have a 50% #CTA redundancy on your homepage even back then.

Also, please be advised that if you are an optimist you will probably be dead by easter.

Yesterday I added more than 300 more blogs to https://indieblog.page/ which I got from https://bringback.blog/ - if you want to discover new #blogs to read you might want to check out both projects.

Subversive toot of the day: bring back website buttons and link pages: https://sadgrl.online/projects/88x31-button-maker #indieweb #smallweb #cozyweb #links #webdev

I follow several #webcomics, generally getting notification of their updates via #RSS (one of the few #indieweb holdouts despite GAFAM's attempt at its suppression, with Mozilla's complacency and assistance) from their self-hosted websites. I noticed that many of them (spot checks, I haven't collected stats) use #WordPress, and in fact more specifically #ComicPress.

I started a new living-document style blog post on kins that I think are red flags in men. It's mostly meant for-fun, and entirely subjective to my world view. I'll be posting about updates to it as they happen.
