Tiny websites have always fascinated me, along with internet web portals (which haven't been a thing for many years-- at least in the way we used to know them). I'm talking a simple HTML page with just a graphic or two, and a bunch of links. Something that might resemble the early days of Yahoo, etc.
The idea for this site I made has been buzzing around in my head for a while now. It is NOT responsive, there is NO JavaScript, and there's just a TINY bit of CSS. The whole site (one HTML page) is only about 9kb!
A simple site like this one might look primitive compared to some of the huge, complicated websites we see as standard on the internet today, but this site is guaranteed to work on any browser or device.
I used links for sites/documents that I frequent or use a lot, and mixed in my own personal projects for fun. It's a super simple page-- mostly for my own usage. But I really love the design of it!
I don't have a URL set up for it other than just on my free server at freehostia, but here it is! I call it 'Mr Beamer's Old Timey Web Portal'. 😂

This is a bit nerdier blog post about my recent migration to CapRover. If you're looking for a self-hosted alternative to Heroku, either for your own project, or to try some of the self-hosted apps it supports, you should give it a try.

It's really awesome seeing all the innovation and experimenting around Mastodon, fediverse, and ActivityPub.
Some of my own work includes:
- https://fediverse-explorer.stefanbohacek.dev: browse the most recent posts by tags
- https://github.com/stefanbohacek/mastodon-tools: a Mastodon extension that adds instance switcher and profile cards (currently beta-testing, feedback welcome!)

inspired by @simon, i've started a til repository. anytime i find a funky bug that i take a while to solve, i'll post the full error message and the solution i found.
hopefully, if anyone runs into the same error, they'll be able to find my solution!
my first til is now up on my github (github.com/andrwcnln/til) as well as over at:

Tik Tok is next to tell you what kind of links you can put on your online profile.
"TikTok has begun blocking links to app stores in creators’ bios, [....] The block [...] also extends to third-party link-in-bio solutions like Linktree."
And this is why you need to own your web presence, even if it's a basic, single page hosted on https://neocities.org or https://glitch.com.

Spent some of my afternoon attempting to better implement #MicroFormats2 and schema.org #MicroData into my blog.
I think I've done a reasonable job (according to the various parsers I can check) but all in all it's just made my head hurt for no tangible benefit I can glean.
It shouldn't be this tricky right?

Hey - it’s #ADHDObsessionWednesday!
I want to hear from my #adhd peeps: what’s your current obsession or passion?
I’m still obsessed with #Mastodon, the #Fediverse, and the possibility of a better internet. So I added a bunch of #IndieWeb features to my new site.
(I was gonna do this on Monday but… I got distracted & forgot 😆)

I recently got access to the BlueSky beta, and decided to poke around to see what it's all about. I will save the details of what it is and how I feel about it for a different post. However, one of the first things you do when you sign up is choose a username that exists under the bsky.app domain. I have zero interest in another name rush where everyone tries to claim the shortest username possible, so I went with aaronpk.bsky.app rather than trying to get a or apk.

@yosh This is one of the things I like about the #IndieWeb, that it clearly separates authoring, hosting, aggregation, subscribing, reading, mentioning into different composable parts.
Good thing that it’s possible to bridge Mastodon and the IndieWeb.
Now eg clients are not built for open standards but rather a Mastodon specific one, whereas the IndieWeb has #MicroPub and #MicroSub + the ability to advertise where your such servers are similar to how you add email server discoverability to DNS

I'm glad to see that BlueSky supports custom domains! I have zero interest in sitting on a username in the bluesky namespace. Setting it up was roughly the same as pointing your own domain to a hosting provider, and a lot easier than Mastodon/ActivityPub!
