Tiny notes as I work on migrating my IndieWeb webring šŸ•øļøšŸ’ to a new tech stack.

Downloading the database from the glitch.com project’s .data folder was easier than I thought.

I’m also working with a slightly different schema to drop the unmaintainable emoji slugs, so learning the sqlite3 syntax for selectively dumping columns was very helpful!

Still a few rough edges to knock off, mostly around making sure I can successfully fetch folks’ pages and find the webring links on them, but it’s close!

Saying Hello

Hello world, and welcome to Greg’s Place! Since this is my first post, I’ll keep it short and just say that I’m eexperimenting with the #IndieWeb and #ActivityPub in particular in relation to how it would work with #Wordpress Crossing my fingers and hoping this goes off without a hitch… if you see this status update, please feel free to comment and say #Hello

Experimenting with Bridgy Fed

Oof, so the experiment with the ActivityPub and Friends plugins for WordPress didn’t exactly go to plan… I’m not entirely sure why things failed, but at least I have another option to experiment with known as #BridgyFed If everything goes to plan, those of you reading this via #Mastodon should be able to respond back from your preferred client using @gregsplace.net Go ahead and give it a try, as I’d like to know if Bridgy Fed actually works compared to the poor experience I got with the ActivityPub/Friends plugins.

Hi Greg, nice to see you around. I hope you have a lot of fun with your experiments šŸ™‚

Good afternoon fedisons, we’re doing Tuesday.
Before I go any further, by "fedisons", I mean all my people using Mastodon and any other ActivityPub powered software, plus the O-status and ActivityStream folks, and let’s not forget everyone using #indieweb building blocks like webmention and micropub.
Anyway …
John and I both had soup for lunch, and we have pleasantly full tummies. We got a very late start this morning. Neither of us got up until after 9, and I didn’t… https://arush.io/?p=254780

Special shout-out to @sod who has been working with us to update all the Micro.blog themes with improved Microformats markup and other fixes. A bunch have been updated already! Check your Plug-ins page every once in a while to see if there’s an update to a theme you’re using.

Having my daily ā€œwhat if I just scrapped everything and rewrote it allā€ moment.

Though, thankfully, this time it’s not because I’m working on some god awful code full of technical debt, I’m working on my own website. šŸ˜Ž (I hope my sarcasm is being conveyed by that emoji)

Does anyone else constantly have this feeling? How do you convince yourself not to do it?
I’m sure I've heard a statistic about how it’s almost always more time consuming and more effort to start over, right?

What I Want From The Internet - Christopher Butler

You can, today, still go back to the can-to-can structure that a personal website, an RSS feed, and a browser provide. It’s not perfect. It leaves an enormous amount of signal unheard. It requires more work to find things, and to be found.

But you can do it. And I hope you do, in some way.

I’m on quite a blogging roll since I started using Jekyll how it was intended – i.e. for publishing articles sans comments, webmentions etc. I seem to have settled on the 3-500 word post, which is an inbetween sort of length. Consequently, I’m posting more posts than notes šŸ¤”

I’ve got an idea for a book as well.

Eu intencionava dar uma estudada em #webmentions, mas vi um post recente de um cara com site pessoal falando que praticamente só recebia spam e que estava desativando webmentions no site dele².

VocĆŖs tĆŖm alguma experiĆŖncia com isso? Gostam? Desgostam?

Honestly I think Mastodon should remove the DM feature from the UI given the nature of the AP protocol. Even if you encrypt the message contents it is still always going to be public information that you sent something and who you sent it to, given how ActivityPub works so given the reasonable expectation of privacy that comes with a feature like DMs, which AP just can't do, remove the feature from the interface so people know to use something else for private communication.

I am confused why I got questions like "What are your weaknesses?". How about your company tell their weaknesses first? This way both of us realize that nobody is perfect.

I wrote a blog post about my opinions on the hiring process that I experienced.
