I’m testing Calckey to improve compatibility with Micro.blog. Some of the UI is quite busy and not for me, but I love how they are showing ActivityPub usernames, with the profile photo and dimmed domain name. Might borrow this.

Screenshot of Calckey with usernames.

@tchambers @decius Also: #BlueSky, #Fediverse _and_ the #IndieWeb can learn from one another. The IndieWeb’s focus on plurality and composition of independent standards is worse from a PR perspective but better from a resiliency and innovation perspective

Can anyone tell me what the #indieweb is?

My first new blog post since 2021. 😅

Notes: This moment isn't about decentralization

WordPress is celebrating its 20th anniversary today!

https://wordpress.org/news/2023/05/celebrating-20-years-of-wordpress/

I moved my personal site to it 5 years ago. From my blog post:

"I am also interested in exploring other open web technologies, like ActivityPub and OStatus. I’m not 100% convinced that Mastodon will take over Twitter, but there is a lot of promise in the ideas and technologies behind it."

There sure is!

Seems unlikely that we’ll end up with a single unified social web platform. I like Mastodon’s focus on communities. I like Bluesky’s thinking on distributed moderation. I like the IndieWeb’s principles of ownership. I like Nostr’s private messaging. How will we tie all of this together? Blogs.

I just reached two hundred original posts (excluding boosts and replies) on #Fediverse! Took me six months. I have them all archived on my website https://abnv.me/mb, something which I couldn't do when I was on Twitter. #indieweb

I love fiddling around with my website

#WebSites #PersonalSites #IndieWeb

@ubergeek I've been going back and forth between the idea of a second Fediverse account on something like #WriteFreely, firing up my own instance of something (maybe #WordPress, it has decent #ActivityPub integrations), or just firing up an #IndieWeb website with blog and microblog capabilities and using https://fed.brid.gy. I did look at implementing AP myself, but it's fiddly and I don't have the time.

@vortex_egg I was gonna use #IndieWeb (https://indieweb.org/Category:PostType) and BibTeX types.

I also have had this damn tab open for ages: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Decimal_Classification for creating the directory structure on my storage drives. :blobshrug:

#indieweb uses a set of standards such a microformats and webmentions. With those things in place it can be part of the Fediverse via ActivityPub with a little help from briding services such as Bridgy Fed https://fed.brid.gy/
@jeremiahlee.com (@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold) you’re right that the #IndieWeb is more of a movement. It’s a community based on shared values & principles¹, one of which is plurality², explicitly prioritizing interoperability over any “particular piece of technology”.

As to “subdomains as usernames using #ActivityPub?”, myself and others are using our (sub)domains as usernames, e.g. via the #BridgyFed service³. Mine should be self-evident in the header of this post wherever you’re reading #fediverse posts.

Completely agree that “a link that also works as a mention name is obvious / intuitable”, have been practicing that for a while, and wrote up some notes about how & why:

* https://tantek.com/2023/011/t1/indieweb-evolving-at-mention
* https://tantek.com/2023/014/t4/domain-first-federated-atmention
* https://tantek.com/2023/018/t1/elevate-indieweb-above-silo
* https://tantek.com/2023/019/t5/reply-domain-above-address-and-silo

which I should organize into a longer blog post at some point.

@reiver My understanding is that #IndieWeb is more of a movement than a particular piece of technology. Can you point me to an implementation of subdomains as usernames using ActivityPub?

@Jeremiah

The #IndieWeb people have been using subdomains for usernames for many years.
