I had a lengthy post written about strategies on how to browse the internet without distraction. But after writing it I realized that it in essence it boiled down into two practices:

  1. Consume all of your web content through RSS feeds. 1 2
  2. Set aside time to read your RSS feed once or twice a day. 3

That’s it. No more infinite scroll, no more FOMO, no more clickbait, no more distraction, no more provocation.

  1. If a website doesn’t offer RSS, don’t bother trying to read it. Don’t surrender your time and attention to anyone who doesn’t value it, or worse, is trying to commodify it. I know it will feel like you’re missing out, but there is a pretty clear correlation between websites that offer RSS and websites with content worth your time. ↩︎

  2. Even social media. If your social media platform of choice doesn’t offer RSS, it’s not worth your time. Not being able to “interact” with posts is a feature, not a bug, of RSS. I put “interact” in quotes because tapping an icon on a screen is hardly a real interaction anyway. A reply is always better, but comment boxes and social media replies encourage more volatile reactions due to how easy they are to send. An email, webmention, or blog post is always a more thoughtful interaction. ↩︎

  3. I’ve uninstalled my RSS reader on my phone as I found I felt I was refreshing my feeds whenever I had a spare moment wherever I was. ↩︎

@ourcornishfarm totally agree! A lot of people on the fediverse also have their own blogs. It's all part of the indieweb and it totally rocks

Love this experimental web stuff (#indieweb adjacent).

Trying to work out what this #hugo code is doing:
https://github.com/pmichaillat/pmichaillat.github.io/blob/main/layouts/partials/author.html

Ideally I want to pass it something like
author: ["D. Mills (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=uF8WxbAAAAAJ)"]

and have it output a html link with my name and the link to the google page.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I finally made my webmention-server public 🥳

https://github.com/CobyPear/webmention-server

This was fun to build and I learned a lot. The main goal was to build something from a spec which I had never done before, but seemed like good practice. I use it on my blog.

Read a bit more about it here:

As a starting line for my #indieweb run, I've benchmarked my site using the IndieWeb.org #indiemark spec https://shellsharks.com/indiemark-score.

Currently sitting at Level 0 (of 6-ish total levels). I got a lot of fun work ahead of me!

@amino @james I think that you should be able to do that natively with #webmentions, there are at least 4 Hugo themes that are webmention #indieweb ready out there..

A short piece on my discovery of the #indieweb. Love the entire concept and excited to join the movement. https://shellsharks.com/indieweb

Does anyone have experience with the #Ghost publishing platform? Or opinions about it?

I’m thinking of starting a (very) small news service in our village to cover council meetings and events. Probably a newsletter and podcast.

Just posted a new episode of Core Intuition all about the Threads launch. Misunderstandings about ActivityPub, judging the leadership of Meta and Twitter, and whether Threads will beat Tumblr to supporting this open standard.

aside from this little fedi friends page i'm actually going to start a legit webring for personal websites (not just websites people here run) so hmu if you want to join that, will be probably be implemented on my website in a couple days

Do you know an IndieWeb directory ?

I want to discover more independent websites.

Person giving a talk about the IndieWeb at, FOSSY, an open source conference in Portland Oregon

Remember when Tumblr showed interest in #indieweb, then ended up doing nothing, then showed interest in #activitypub, then ended up doing nothing?

Maybe there’s still stuff going on there but I’m not terribly optimistic.
