I don't get #IndieWeb. It seems like #ActivityPub but with a different name and reliant on cloud services.

WOOHOOO! https://marigold.town/ is LIVE! <3 the webhost with a small-town vibe is up and residency applications are open!
i hope if you have any interest in personal websites, #indieweb, or #webdev, you'll give it a look over and check out all of our amazing residents! :) they put in a lot of work to get their shops up by launch, but we did it! :')
thank you to everyone who's participating so far and those who have been interested. i'm so glad there's so many people who are interested in bringing some whimsy back into the #internet <3 i hope they inspire you to create your own whimsical personal website, if even it's just about something you enjoy.
this project has been super fun to launch, and there's more coming! residency applications are open, if you're game! :)

On Bluesky and others, Evan writes:
\n
\n
We get exponential growth based on having one protocol, not a half dozen. @kvuzet I've seen multiple web rings from Gen z folks. It gives me hope. A lot of people are looking to #indieweb and #smallweb stuff. An economy based on surveillance and advertising can only live for so long before people stop accepting it. The companies won't take it easy but it's going to keep shifting

Thanks to some creative wget and command line-fu I now have a local copy of the Thoreau.eserver.org materials. I had linked to so much of Thoreau's writing on the eserver site from my journals, I was bummed to lose all the links so updating the journal to point to my local mirror. You can't rely on remote data being around. Own your data!

The combination of taking more time (as longer form writing encourages) and publishing on a domain associated with your name, your identity, enables & incentivizes more thoughtful writing. More thoughtful writing elevates the reader to a more thoughtful state of mind.

#introduction
Hi, I'm David.
I design, create, and write about things. I was raised in the UK but now live in Luxembourg with my wife, two kids, and a number cats.
I started programming when cpus had 8 bits and V.32 was new. I've worked with blue chip titans to small code shops. I’m currently involved with #IndieWeb and have implemented IndieAuth, TicketAuth, Micropub, Microsub, and WebSub; development in #GoLang on the server and #GoLang and #SwiftUI on the client.

Tomorrow I'll be interviewing @pfefferle for the Press This podcast. We'll talk about his #ActivityPub plugin for #WordPress and his Open Web Lead at #Automattic.
Do you have any questions you'd like me to ask Matthias tomorrow about his plugins, the #IndieWeb, or the #fediverse? Let me know and I'll try to include them.

Is there any downside to using #LetsEncrypt's #certbot to get free SSL certs for my sites? Like, are they considered "good" certs? I really don't have anything too sensitive going on on my sites, save for a git repo, so I'm not too pressed about the quality. But, is there some gotcha I'm missing?
