@marcelweiss

A little #IndieWeb thing that I'd forgotten about…

I'm fairly certain, but will never be 100% certain, that I was responsible for #Bandcamp adding `rel="me”` links to artist profile page URLs. Verified links to Bandcamp profiles on the artist's Mastodon account. 🥳

Webmention are not working well this month.

How to fix the internet | MIT Technology Review

We’re in a rare moment when a shift just may be possible; the previously intractable and permanent-seeming systems and platforms are showing that they can be changed and moved, and something new could actually grow.

The fix for the internet isn’t to shut down Facebook or log off or go outside and touch grass. The solution to the internet is more internet: more apps, more spaces to go, more money sloshing around to fund more good things in more variety, more people engaging thoughtfully in places they like. More utility, more voices, more joy.

This made me think about finally adding “card” metadata to my pages after me resisting these non-open standards for ages.

Of course, the Twitter dev docs have a Not Found in the middle of their Summary Card example: https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-for-websites/cards/overview/summary

Hello WordPress

Setting up my personal website to be a bigger part of the #IndieWeb and I'm still horribly confused over webmentions. If I, quite literally, don't want to have your data or even sell your data, is there a way people can comment on my blog without me having to host *their comments?* like, maybe they could comment on a Mastodon instance and my site just pulls it in? I still don't get web mentions at all VS Comments. Ah well, time to play with kittens! In the meantime, if someone can point me to a nice novel about web mentions VS comments, link me!

Try to set up a bare bones #ActivityPub server has proved a touch harder than I was expecting. Anyone have any good up-to-date guides? Preferably one with solid examples.

All I'm looking to do is making something that can be followed, and make posts that can be interacted with from #Mastodon at least.

Thinking about how to publish machine-friendly updates for my blog. I was trying to compare RSS vs Atom and I noticed ActivityStreams is a superset of the domain. Does ActivityStreams supersedes RSS/ATOM?

Community Guidelines for Kottke.org

I like Jason’s guidelines—very in keeping with The Session’s house rules.

And I really like his motivation for trying out comments:

The timing feels right. Twitter has imploded and social sites/services like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon are jockeying to replace it (for various definitions of “replace”). People are re-thinking what they want out of social media on the internet and I believe there’s an opportunity for sites like kottke.org to provide a different and perhaps even better experience for sharing and discussing information. Shit, maybe I’m wrong but it’s definitely worth a try.

As I said in my comment:

Yes! More experiments like this please! Experiments that aren’t just “let’s clone Twitter”.

My misadventures with ActivityPub continues!

So, this morning I posted a blog post on DramaTea, my blog for CDramas and Kdramas.

In a weird twist, my older posts are now appearing in the Fediverse version of the DramaTea blog and my new post is not appearing 😂 And even more mysteriously, my brid.gy integration which has never worked before started to work! Haha! What’s going on?

What can I say? The wordpress.com and Activitypub integration with the Fediverse is still a little rough around the edges.

Comments are also not reliably appearing either. I’ve posted a query on WordPress.com’s support forums, and it’s so far crickets!

Looks like I am not moving away from brid.gy anytime soon. Hope it improves and the team doesn’t ignore the problem.

Let’s see if this post appears on @elizabethtai.com

Implemented liking/favoriting of #Mastodon posts via Bridgy Fed on my site! (Actually of any post on any site that #BridgyFed can discover an #ActivityPub endpoint to send likes to.)

Tested it by liking @evanp.me (@evan@cosocial.ca @evanpro)’s reply¹ confirming that he received a notification from my prior post². I sent a #Webmention from my like post³ to Bridgy Fed, and it #federated the like to Evan’s server, which subsequently showed up in the "favourites" list of Evan’s post:

Every step that connects heterogenous #socialWeb systems & protocols feels like progress.

I really enjoy the ideas behind #IndieWeb and want to actively plan on being a part of it and bringing my sites and work into the fold. Putting this here for accountability :)
