This post from @mia@void.rehab will ring true to anyone who has actually implemented an ActivityPub server. We talk about ActivityPub as if it’s a fully-formed spec, but it’s really a suite of specs, and trial and error. I’d love to see the specs streamlined without breaking compatibility.

Webmention are not working well this month.
Sender : webmention.app ❌
Receiver : webmention.io ❌
We’re in a rare moment when a shift just may be possible; the previously intractable and permanent-seeming systems and platforms are showing that they can be changed and moved, and something new could actually grow.
The fix for the internet isn’t to shut down Facebook or log off or go outside and touch grass. The solution to the internet is more internet: more apps, more spaces to go, more money sloshing around to fund more good things in more variety, more people engaging thoughtfully in places they like. More utility, more voices, more joy.
This made me think about finally adding “card” metadata to my pages after me resisting these non-open standards for ages.
Of course, the Twitter dev docs have a Not Found in the middle of their Summary Card example: https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-for-websites/cards/overview/summary
Setting up my personal website to be a bigger part of the #IndieWeb and I'm still horribly confused over webmentions. If I, quite literally, don't want to have your data or even sell your data, is there a way people can comment on my blog without me having to host *their comments?* like, maybe they could comment on a Mastodon instance and my site just pulls it in? I still don't get web mentions at all VS Comments. Ah well, time to play with kittens! In the meantime, if someone can point me to a nice novel about web mentions VS comments, link me!
Try to set up a bare bones #ActivityPub server has proved a touch harder than I was expecting. Anyone have any good up-to-date guides? Preferably one with solid examples.
All I'm looking to do is making something that can be followed, and make posts that can be interacted with from #Mastodon at least.
Thinking about how to publish machine-friendly updates for my blog. I was trying to compare RSS vs Atom and I noticed ActivityStreams is a superset of the domain. Does ActivityStreams supersedes RSS/ATOM?
Yes
No
I like Jason’s guidelines—very in keeping with The Session’s house rules.
And I really like his motivation for trying out comments:
The timing feels right. Twitter has imploded and social sites/services like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon are jockeying to replace it (for various definitions of “replace”). People are re-thinking what they want out of social media on the internet and I believe there’s an opportunity for sites like kottke.org to provide a different and perhaps even better experience for sharing and discussing information. Shit, maybe I’m wrong but it’s definitely worth a try.
Yes! More experiments like this please! Experiments that aren’t just “let’s clone Twitter”.
