It seems they\u2019ll pivot to a smaller team, acknowledging that maybe Tumblr can\u2019t be competitive with other massive social networks, but could do just fine as a more niche platform:</p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are shifting from the mode of \u201csurging\u201d on Tumblr with tons of people to get it to exciting growth, to working on how we can run Tumblr in the most smooth and efficient manner. Pretty amazing things in the social and messaging space have been accomplished with small teams, so I\u2019m actually quite curious to see a smaller and more focused Tumblr\u2019s performance in 2024.</p>\n</blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m a little confused about what Tumblr has been up to in the four years since the acquisition. Automattic had ambitious plans both for ActivityPub and to rebuild the foundation of Tumblr on WordPress. But there are a lot of smaller things they could do, like add support for IndieWeb standards Micropub and Webmention, simple protocols that are straightforward to implement.</p>\n<p>Even so, Automattic is a great home for Tumblr. But here\u2019s the main things I\u2019m trying to get working/have already and love.<br /><br />- Nunjucks and Markdown Templating Support<br />- Some kind of decent support for getting a post from iOS pushed to whatever repo stores the site and triggers a build<br />- Ability for multiple post types (ex. Posts as one category and notes as another)<br />- API connections to other services to grab extra metadata without custom functions (ex. Adding a book ISBN to the metadata and being able to pull whatever expected data for the book into the post itself)<br /><br />My reqs./wishes are a bit odd and eventually I\u2019ll build my own system (<a href=\"https://alpha.polymaths.social/tags/indieweb\">#<span>IndieWeb</span></a> FTW) but I have literally zero free time to work on it. Maybe over the summer but that\u2019s also very much up in the air (waiting on internships but I won\u2019t hear about the one that I\u2019m really banking on until like March).</p>",
