@hankg @danyork I moved to Mastodon a year ago and wanted to read a tweet yesterday. I had a negative feeling when Xitter opened in my browser, as if my smartphone was about to explode ... that's how negative my attitude towards the platform has become, even though I still have my deactivated account.

Last weekend, I sent out Issue 3 of #OwnYourWeb. 🥳

This time, it was all about the question: (how) does a personal website change your life?

Plus links to talks, podcasts, and posts by @sophie, @paulrobertlloyd, @adactio, @fonts, Scott Tolinski, and Wes Bos.

Since search seems to suck so much these days—thanks seo!—I'd really prefer to have a personal search engine that just returns results from a list I've given it of my friends' websites and social media accounts.

I want to see if any of the my friends have been to [place], or read [book], or tried out [gear] so I can ask them personally what they thought about it.

Anything exist like that?

I have too many fediverse accounts and need to settle on one.

Should I stick with this server, another one, or go back to self-hosting?

My website is ActivityPub-enabled and wondering if that's the way to go?

Halp, please? 🙃

@matthiasott my website is made essentially using Hugo. However, it is wrapped around with my custom CMS (https://github.com/hacdias/eagle) for any dynamic needs (Webmentions, Micropub, search, etc).

I have used Hugo since 2015 and Eagle since the end of 2019, when I discovered the #indieweb.

Considering a URL shortener for my site. Likely something self-hosted. It's been a while since I thought about this. Any recommendations?

Not sure how much I care about analytics. Just something I can uses to expose links in print, presentations, email etc. Maybe I do care about analytics idk?

Also, happy Thanksgiving and all that. I hope it's pleasant.

For others looking for my RSS feed, everything will now go to my website. I tried to add some IndieWeb stuff to it, but it messed up my theme, but I like my theme and don't wanna change it just to make IndieWeb stuff easier, so RSS it is! https://robertkingett.com/feed/ #RSS #IndieWeb

Tis the season for blog posts! Here's another one, with my review on using Obsidian for note taking & research projects.

I was just thinking @davew ’s #Artcasting concept would be a neat way to consume a #PixelFed account’s content. (Feasible, @pixelfed ?) Even cooler if it could be used to power a photo frame or smart device widget. (Maybe #Widgetsmith could add this option @_Davidsmith ?) #IndieWeb #RSS

Just posted a rough draft of my digital content initiative to GitHub. When I say “rough draft” I mean rough. Just know that going in.

The digital content initiative (working title?) is an attempt to preserve my digital content and reclaim my digital identity. Feel free to check it out.

Fediverse Unlocked

@matthiasott I've had a personal site for the past 17 years. I've tinkered a lot with it, I find it a great way to learn new things.

I started with Joomla, then moved to WordPress, then Jekyll, then back to WordPress, then Ghost, then back to WordPress again.

It's always back to #WordPress in the end. :)

If I had to pick a few reasons why:

  • It's what I know best
  • I found that all the others lacked some features out of the box, and often required either third-party tools or a fair amount of tinkering to get to a level of features similar to WordPress.
  • It's easy to extend via plugins. Connecting my site to the Fediverse was very easy via the different ActivityPub / Webfinger plugins. Installing #IndieWeb features like Webmentions can also be done in minutes via plugins that are actively maintained.
  • It requires very little to no maintenance nowadays. I'm comfortable setting everything to auto-update so I don't even have to worry about updates anymore.
  • Setting it up was easy, especially compared with some of the other solutions I've tried, like Ghost.

@matthiasott A little late getting this to you (I just saw this post yesterday). Love the newsletter though!
