Thanks to this handy guide, I worked up a new #mastodon share button on my website! It posts the link and tags me. The #fediverse and #indieweb are so freaking cool! https://www.bentasker.co.uk/posts/documentation/general/adding-a-share-on-mastodon-button-to-a-website.html

I'm old enough to remember the web before clickbait, unedited AI-generated content, algorithmic timelines and so on. That's not to say that there haven't been massive changes for the better since I first launched Netscape Navigator - I definitely don't miss dial-up modems!

I'm hoping that Mastodon will continue to be a place where interesting voices aren’t drowned out by the noise.

I'm interested in following and interacting with accounts about #fediverse #indieweb and #cricket

#introduction

For citizens of the #OpenWeb, I think it means deciding what we love about it and then fighting for those things.

For me, it's the quirky platforms that comprise the #OpenWeb#Omglol #Feedland, #microblog, and many others. It's also all the personal sites, blogs and #digitalgardens, on the #indieweb.

Hello helpful friends of the Fediverse! I am considering a major rearchitecture of my site, https://shellsharks.com (and adjacent properties) and wanted to get some advice/tips from the wider #indieweb, #blogging, #openweb, #webdev, #webdevelopment communities out here. (Sorry for the long read!)

Currently, my site is hosted on Github Pages which uses #jekyll for static site generation. I've been using this for nearly 5 years and for the most part have no complaints. The service has decent uptime, is pretty customizable (custom CSS, JS, etc...) and after all this time I am pretty comfortable using it. Some things I am interested in though in terms of re-architecting...

- Fediverse / ActivityPub compatibility - #wordpress has gone live with their AP plugin and sites like micro.blog (I think) have some direct AP functionality. I'm interested in exploring this but it's not necessarily a must-have. More on Fediverse point of presence later...

- IndieWeb functionality - I've baked in as much IndieWeb stuff as I can reasonably do with Jekyll hosted on Git Pages but would be interested in WebMention and other more advanced capabilities if offered by another platform / static-site generator.

- I've toyed with the idea of self-hosting the blog (on AWS or something), while still using an SSG of some kind. There could be some benefits with adding more dynamic content or having more autonomy over my site but not sure if it'd be worth additional costs or headache trying to manage.

- Writing (or generally producing "content") has always been something I do out of pure enjoyment but I've considered trying to monetize in some way. What are some platform considerations if I wanted to monetize say, a podcast, newsletter, video courses, premium articles, etc...

--

Other adjacent properties I'm looking to "re-design"...

- My #podcast is currently hosted on #Podbean, which I have liked so far but I'd like to further embrace the Fediverse so have considered moving to #Castopod. Any advice on hosted vs. self-hosted? Are there other non-Castopod fediverse options?

- As of right now, my presence in the Fediverse is mostly on infosec.exchange where I post stuff from my site. I've considered hosting my own instance of Mastodon (or something similar) to be my main account or even just as an official "shellsharks the site" account. I've seen accounts of people going down this path and ultimately bailing due to costs, time overhead, etc...

--

If there are noticeable benefits to making any significant changes I'd be willing to take that on as a project for 2024. Otherwise, I might just stick with what I have and focus on writing/research =). Thanks so much to anyone who takes the time to read / respond!

Is this so-called #gentrification of the #openweb, or the #indieweb, such a bad thing though? That depends on the town's goals.

There are compelling pro-gen arguments— more infrastructure, ability to attract talent, and overall improved business.

I'm back! Where was I? Oh yeah, the open web is kinda like a small quaint town.

The #openweb, and the #indieweb has become trendy again.

I'm never the earliest adopter to new trends. I usually fall somewhere between pioneer and basic, or as the kids say, "cheugy."

So when I got here, all these cool tools to explore the open web already existed. Like one of my favorites, Wiby. I could press the "surprise me" button all day (and I do sometimes).

Just saying https://omg.lol is a great way to begin your journey to self hosting and #indieweb stuff

@operationpuppet

My search engine has never heard of this. Are you sure you didn't just come up with it?

Regardless, count me in. #SmallWeb #Selfhost #IndieWeb #MeshNetworks etc.

Just signed up for a yearly Patreon for my instance, IndieWeb.social, at the $5/month level.

I’ve been a happy user for a year and have, in that time, greatly appreciated IndieWeb’s idealistic-yet-pragmatic approach to interoperability and support for an open web.

Good things often require money to operate, however, so here we are.

Thanks for your hard work, @tchambers, and my apologies for freeloading for so long. 😄

Considered moving instance to indieweb.social for a while. I see the admin @tchambers seems hopeful about the Threads federation. I really like the ethic of https://indieweb.org, independent #openweb and believe independence sometimes has a price. I'm looking for a similar instance that has signed the #fedipact, blocks federation with Threads or at least has a very clear contingency plan for when they would do so, if they're still in wait-and-see mode. Any recommendations? #indieweb

@parismarx

Ghost is definitely a good fit for you. You should consider running your own VPS to regain full control… by using Cloudron for setup, admin and updates you don't need to worry about getting into time-consuming code and maintenance issues.

IndieAuth for WordPress 4.4.1 Released - December 21, 2023

As the year winds down, thinking about the fediverse, I want to do a better job in 2024 of making the case for independent blogs. Lots of platforms with thousands of users on each server talking via ActivityPub is great, but more blogs also helps with portable identity and a more distributed web.

Great article from David Pierce at The Verge about the potential of the fediverse:

Forget the hand-wavy protocol stuff for a second — one of the best things about embracing ActivityPub is that it sticks a crowbar into a single Voltron-ic product like Facebook or Twitter or Snapchat and pries it apart into its component pieces, each one ripe for innovation and new ideas.

I'm not a web dev. The design process would often be the hardest bit. I even picked up React because it was *the* way to build interactive stuff. I would stop looking at the source once the site looked good enough (it never looks finished anyway).

In hindsight, that was overkill. If I could start over, I would go static and build on #11ty or #hugo.

So, in my interpretation, @gRegorLove is issuing a token to my user...wpdev.gwg.us, but in his, he's issuing a token to his user that I'm allowed to use. I'm assuming his conception is based on his being the owner of the resource.

In my interpretation, when I grant a token to a client like indiebookclub, I’m issuing the token to that client and the token has my information in it. Similarly, with Ticketing, I’m granting a token to an individual site and the token has my information in it. In both cases the token is used to access something on my site.

I’m open to do this differently, but currently I don’t understand why it would be different. The issuer, subject, and resource seem to communicate all the information about who the token is for and how to use it.
