        "html": "<p>Everyone else is doing one so I\u2019d might as well too.</p>\n\n\n<h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_1_January\"></a>January</h3><p>This year started out with health concerns, which ended up setting the stage for the rest of the year.</p><p>I started out with an anxiety attack that felt like a heart attack, and while it was just an anxiety attack, it still led to a bunch of \u201coh by the way\u201d diagnostic concerns which ultimately turned out to be nothing major, heart-wise. But general health issues would continue to affect my entire year.</p><p>I also started hyperfixating on:</p>\n<ul><li>upcoming electric vehicles</li>\n<li>optimizing my espresso</li>\n<li>finding a better way to be employed and/or creative (i.e. feeling the full force of burnout)</li>\n</ul><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_2_February\"></a>February</h3><p>Lots of annoying frustrations with the heart-related diagnosis stuff, and the usual medical gaslighting involved in being overweight.</p><p>I made a bunch of music, and started a meditation/hypnosis podcast.</p><p>I went through the motions of trying to find a job. They\u2019re (mostly) much cleaner now. (I still need to touch the <a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/comics/\">comics section</a> though.)</p><p>The brief surge of elation from VRChat-related productivity soon gave way to a fibromyalgia flareup that took me a while to recover from.</p><p>And, I finally applied for disability benefits. (That process is still ongoing.)</p><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_6_June\"></a>June</h3><p>I turned 45.</p><p>I finally lost my battle with the Washington State Employment Security Department and never saw any of the money I was due from my unemployment that started in 2022.</p><p>I attended Furality, which was fun, but not the life-changing event that it was for some.</p><p>Lots of gender- and choir-related things.</p><p>I visited my family, and got what was probably COVID<a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#d_e10222_fn1\">1</a>, again, just like the last time. Fuck air travel.</p><p>COVID complications sent me briefly to the hospital, where they gaslit me and made no attempts to actually diagnose or treat me.</p><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_7_July\"></a>July</h3><p>I redoubled my efforts to be an avid consumer of music again. It didn\u2019t really last, but at least I had something to blog about for a while.</p><p>I researched one of the uglier truths about electric vehicles. (They\u2019re still a net benefit, by the way, it\u2019s just there\u2019s a few manufacturers and charging providers you should avoid if you care about the ecological impact.)</p><p>Chronic pain and chronic anxiety continued to affect my life profoundly.</p><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_8_August\"></a>August</h3><p>After having a frustrating time recording a small \u201clive\u201d set in my basement I decided it was time to finally organize down there, and that made a huge improvement to my workflow and quality of life and so on. There\u2019s still a bunch of stuff to be done but I\u2019m very glad I did as much as I did.</p><p>But my chronic pain hit a new high and I was extremely depressed.</p><p>I briefly got more active on <a href=\"https://cohost.org/fluffy\">Cohost</a>, but that didn\u2019t last. I have very mixed feelings about that place.</p><p>I had a blood glucose scare. Turned out my meter was bad and/or there\u2019s a reason test strips have an expiration date on them.</p><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_9_September\"></a>September</h3><p>I decided to refresh my Mastodon profile a bit and actually did some drawing as part of it.</p><p>I also did a deep-dive on some hand-wavey data science to determine the rough age demographics of Mastodon.</p><p>I hit a threshold with my concerns over the current capitalist hellscape dystopia.</p><p>I got a brief surge of interest in working on comics again, and specifically wanted to work with someone else as the artist, but nothing came of it.</p><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_10_October\"></a>October</h3><p>More good stuff with the choir!</p><p>Bandcamp imploded! Again! So I finally dusted off Bandcrash and made it actually usable for people who aren\u2019t me! I think I\u2019m still the only user! Why do I bother!!!</p><p>The first of two major delayed-onset catastrophes with my bathroom remodel from hell happened! This one was at least easy and cheap to fix.</p><p>More health-related crap, this time involving dental care as well. Also got a new glasses prescription.</p><p>I started roasting my own coffee.</p><p>I also discovered that my house\u2019s roof, while supposedly only a bit over 10 years old, was so shoddily-installed that I needed a new one, because it was about to collapse. Wish I\u2019d known this <em>before</em> I\u2019d gotten solar panels installed.</p><p>Oh, and I got hired as the staff composer for the VRC Trans Academy. (This is an unpaid volunteer position but hopefully it will lead me to even better things.)</p><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_11_November\"></a>November</h3><p>I only made a little music, for game jams, instead of my usual Novembeat hyper-output. I needed a break this year, I guess.</p><p>My house got a new roof.</p><p>I explored with some CDN options for Bandcrash users. While itch.io is still the best option for it, if you just want to host your player somwhere, B2 isn\u2019t too bad.</p><p>I hit a pain wall and decided Bandcrash is at a good stopping point for now.</p><p>The choir had an amazing show for Trans Day of Remembrance and I was very glad to be a part of it.</p><p>I started to ramp up using my 3D printer for making actual art that I could sell for money.</p><p>The disability application process continued to be terrible.</p><h3><a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10222-Year-in-review-2023#10222_h3_12_December\"></a>December</h3><p>Having close to a year of solar power gave me a good idea of how good of an investment it was. I still have <a href=\"http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/10864-Music-stuff-for-sale\">music gear</a> available though.</p><p>I also simplified my recording studio setup, and it feels good.</p><p>I launched <a href=\"https://fluffybusybee.etsy.com/\">my Etsy shop</a>. I haven\u2019t had many sales, but at least now I have somewhere to put all my 3D printing stuff in case someone wants to buy it.         "html": "<p> These are the concepts and ideas that have improved my life this year:</p><p><strong>POSSE + Personal Knowledge Management + Obsidian = Writing 5x faster</strong></p><p>I\u2019ve long realised that I don\u2019t write in a linear fashion. Meaning, my thoughts are chaos monkeys that flit from one topic to another, not following a flow or a timeline. </p><p>In the past, I\u2019d wait for the right moment to organize my chaotic thoughts into a proper article. But I  always end up staring at a blinking cursor, because these chaos monkeys have disappeared into another dimension. It took me so much longer to write articles this way, and it took a lot of brain power to do so.</p><p>A quick segue: The <a href=\"https://elizabethtai.com/2023/07/02/posse-and-pesos-better-ways-to-publish-content/\">POSSE system</a> is where you funnel all content from external sources into your website so that it becomes the single source of truth. I realised that I\u2019ve been pumping so much of content into social media, and they often get lost or ignored. However, what if I repurpose them instead?</p><p>So, this year, I gathered all my thoughts and social media into my Obsidian vault.</p><p>And I found that blog posts or articles practically writes itself this way. </p><p>All I had to do was just do a light edit, shuffle a few blocks of content around, and wala, a blog post is created. No longer do I have to stare at a blinking cursor, trying hard to remember my ideas or thoughts, because I had exported it to my second brain \u2013 my Obsidian vault. This has resulted in much faster output.</p><p>I use this method to quickly write reviews for my Chinese and Korean drama blog, <a href=\"https://dramatea88.wordpress.com\">Drama Tea</a>. While I have figured out how to do this for Chinese drama reviews, I\u2019ve not quite figured out how to do so for more general articles like the one I write in this blog. But I think the same principles should apply. </p><p>I\u2019m just a bit stumped on how to organise it in my Obsidian vault so that I can find it easier next time.</p><p><strong>For the love of the Fediverse and Substack</strong></p><p>I\u2019ve never been happier and mentally healthier on social media, but I now have this problem again: I\u2019m getting addicted to social media again \ud83d\ude05 This is reflected in the declining number of books I\u2019m reading this year. I used to be able to read up to 100 books a year. This year, I barely reached 15. Gah! It\u2019s not that I\u2019m reading less, but I\u2019m reading a lot more social media content, which includes blog posts. The Fediverse and Substack has enabled me to discover writing on newsletter and personal blogs, and it\u2019s a beautiful place to be, reading the writing of average Joes and Janes rather than the anointed demigods of the publishing world.</p><p><strong>Rekinidled my \u2764 for <a class=\"u-tag u-category\" href=\"https://elizabethtai.com/tag/cdramas/\">#CDramas</a></strong></p><p>I\u2019ve been watching Chinese dramas since the 80s, but I stopped due to lack of access and also what I thought was declining quality in Chinese dramas. However, apps such as iQIYI, Viki and WETV, and ahem, third party sites, have reopened the doors for me, so 2023 was the year that I watched almost exclusively CDramas. It made me realise how much I missed watching and absorbing perspectives similar to mine and to revel in my Chinese roots.</p><p>I love Chinese Dramas so much this year that I started a <a href=\"https://dramatea88.wordpress.com/\">blog</a> and a <a href=\"https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/drama-tea\">podcast</a> about it! Can you believe it? Yeah, I can\u2019t either.</p><p><strong>Technical writing </strong></p><p>A friend, with perfectly good intentions said that I was wasting my writing talent writing user guides. But I feel like I\u2019m now in my sweet spot, career- and creativity- wise. Technical writing gives me the opportunity to be exposed to one of my big loves \u2013 software and technology. I was that kid in school who learned BASIC and coded in her free time. It is very nice to blend that side of me with my writerly self.\u2002</p><p><strong>Alternate Day Fasting and exercise consistency </strong></p><p>Honestly, weight loss has been elusive to me. So much so that I\u2019ve stopped making weight loss resolutions every year. But in 2023 I told myself that I had to lose the pandemic weight that I had gained. And I did, losing 6kg. The secret was consistency. </p><p>I started out super small, promising myself that I\u2019ll walk 5000 steps a day. By the end of the year, I was walking 10000. </p><p>The intermittent fasting lifestyle has been great for me. Although I\u2019ve not been as consistent with my fasting as with my exercise, I\u2019m slowly understanding what I need to do to get there, so 2024 is all about being consistent with my exercise + fasting patterns. I hope to lose at least 50% of the 10kg I gained since 2018 due to work stress. Sigh. </p><p><strong>Digital Gardens rekindled my \u2764\ufe0f for blogging</strong></p><p>I wrote about blogging the <a href=\"https://elizabethtai.com/2023/07/06/being-an-imperfect-gardener-of-my-digital-garden/\">digital garden way</a> previously. I used to treat my personal website like a content marketer, every post carefully crafted to attract leads that could improve my career or get freelance opportunities. However, it robbed me of a lot of joy. Now, I treat my personal website as my \u201cdigital home hub\u201d. I\u2019m much happier as a result.</p><p><strong>Walking pads. Why did I wait so long to get one?</strong></p><p>Since I heard about them, I wondered about getting one. I could walk on them while watching TV, for one. I was also having difficulties meeting my 7000 steps goal due to the weather being too hot or rainy. When Lazada had a sale and I spotted an RM350 walking pad, I bought it. But I had very little faith that it would work as it was so cheap. Sometimes the travel was to see family. Sometimes the travel was to spend a week working from a different country\u2014Italy and Spain in 2023; I\u2019d like to do more of that in 2024.\n\nI played mandolin in a lot of sessions in 2023. I plan to play just as much in 2024.",

Sometimes the travel was to see family. Sometimes the travel was to spend a week working from a different country\u2014<a href=\"https://adactio.com/journal/20128\">Italy</a> and <a href=\"https://adactio.com/journal/20468\">Spain</a> in 2023; I\u2019d like to do more of that in 2024.</p>\n\n<p>I played mandolin in a <em>lot</em> of <a href=\"https://adactio.com/journal/20676\">sessions</a> in 2023. I plan to play just as much in 2024.</p>"
