✍️ New on the blog: some musings on the weird traps you can fall into with "drafts" folders, specifically on the web. I'm particularly pleased with the title here (being an ex-Geologist and all 😅)

(also yes, that is back-to-back posts. 2024 energy or something)

A bunch of #IndieWeb blogs are participating in this #AppDefaults trend. I thought it would be interesting to see what people on the fediverse are using. So tell me, what are your default apps on your devices?

“Websites offer an adaptable canvas for self-expression and sharing, … beyond the conventional structure of a blog. Sure, they could be smashed into blog format, but they would lose appeal and charm.”

yes! i totally agree with @flamed here—folks can get caught up in the idea of #blogs being the way to get more ppl into the #indieweb but diversifying the #web (to me) means having more *webpages* that celebrate your hobbies, interests, etc.

gilest.org: Make the indie web easier

#tech #indieweb

https://gilest.org/indie-easy.html

Well, since my personal website is live and published (https://philipptemmel.com) I thought I should update this thread again, since I haven't done it in a while 😅 This will also become my personal and public update thread now in which I share what I am working on regarding my website. 👍

Therefore, I also updated the initial post to reflect the change. 🙌

I run a small web directory for tabletop RPG generator websites. I've also been neglecting it a bit. This year I plan on tending it much more frequently.

Does anyone know of other hand-curated web directories out there?

Jumping on internet discourse again 🔥

"Make the indie web easier" - > If we truly want to open up the web for everyone to publish on, we have to make it easier. Let’s give people choices. Let’s give people options for tools they can set up and use, with no more knowledge than the knowledge they already have.

@devnull I was under the assumption that e.g. #wordpress or @textpattern entering this space would result in lots of federated single-author / single-actor sites.

So the receiving backend doesn't have many targets to parcel delivery but rather just one.

How do you expect this situation to turn out?

This post is part of the 32-Bit Cafe's Holidays 2023 Event (https://32bit.cafe/holidays2023/)

I've left it to the last minute; submissions close tomorrow!

Coming back to say, @nerdyblinddude that neither the blog URL nor the handle you mentioned in your post show up when I do a search on my instance. For others, looks like we have a newcomer to the #IndieWeb space so check out https://tnbd.xyz/

bridgy_logo.png

Bridgy Fed now supports all web sites! You can now use it from the fediverse to see and follow any site, regardless of whether it has microformats2, webmentions, or WebFinger. Bridgy Fed extracts as much profile info as it can, generates fediverse posts from Atom and RSS feeds, and so on.

Web sites start out bridged to the fediverse as [domain]@web.brid.gy. For example, to see new nature.com articles in your fediverse feed, follow @nature.com@web.brid.gy. And as always, if you have a web site, you can upgrade Bridgy Fed to use its domain in its fediverse handle, like mine at @snarfed.org@snarfed.org.

(I’ve loved seeing other similar bridges recently too, including @twilliability@genart.social‘s RSS Parrot and @dave@podcastindex.social‘s pi-activitypub-server. We’re all pulling in the same direction!)

This is one more step toward making Bridgy Fed support people wherever they are, on any network, fully bidirectionally. Stay tuned for more!

for those of us that live in a city, what if we all created a guest network on our routers called “- The Peoples’ Wi-Fi -“ and set the password to ‘Liberate-The-Net’ so anyone anywhere could access the internet regardless of their location or situation?

Lots of people had lots of interesting things to say about my last blog post, so I tried to sum it all up as best I could:
