Weekend Happenings 01-20/21-2024

#indieweb

I'm considering being more public and open with my note-taking. What things are people using for creating a #digitalgarden ? Preferably not a proprietary, locked in platform of course. Looking to keep it fun, not aiming for an academic source of truth!

#ownweb #indieweb #selfhosted

I've become a kind of https://omg.lol super fan. The site allows you to be online in a way that is simple yet powerful. You get tools to let you create on the web, but in a relatively accessible way that expands as your level of sophistication grows. And it's only $20 for a year - a steal. #smallweb #indieweb

@hopeconf @2600 I would love to, but I can't make those dates due to a prior engagement. Happy for anyone else to workshop self-hosting though, the #selfhosting and #indieweb crowd on here are more than able to help.

この前、日本語圏で見かけた #クラフトインターネット みたいな話と #IndieWeb は、同義ではないだろうけど重なるところがありそう

Winer's Law of the Internet

Only 2 weeks left in this month's #IndieWeb Carnival! I posted the 3rd submission a couple of days ago

But there's still room for plenty more! Share your positive memories, and the feelings they invoke 🥰

I wrote a guide on how to teach Root (or at least how I teach it)! 😺️🐦️🐭️🦝️

https://teachroot.yay.boo/

I've taught Root to people a bunch of times. This was supposed to be a quick dump of my mental notes, but I ended up putting in so much effort that I decided I might as well publish it. Maybe it will help someone.

I include teaching tips, explain how I deliver the teach, and outline rough talking points in each section.

@xandra has shared another thought-provoking post as a follow-up to last week's discourse on making the web easier. She talks about websites that go beyond a simple blog.

Think about it: an About page wouldn't be needed if we filled our websites with our interests and hobbies.

Web surfers would quickly better understand who we are from browsing these pages rather than an About page.

So... I just started blogging again for the first time in 2+ years. Check it out!

It's chock full of inside baseball shoutouts to @astro, my old buddy @artlung, some new #indieweb buddies, and read on if you don't know what any of that means:

woohoo! a little late (due to my birthday weekend!) but third #blog entry is up. this one is all about making more webpages, not just blog entries, when we're making our own #website : https://library.xandra.cc/long-live-webpages/

Made some further improvements for the 'Writings' page. Now the category sections have their own containers, had some fun with inner shadows and gradients for them 👀 They look tasty ✨Now, onto the ‘Mosaic’ page.

Not sure if anyone noticed but there was a bit of a rollercoaster going on behind the scenes with Micro.blog’s queueing and ActivityPub the last couple of days. Lots of little tweaks later, much happier with everything. Faster and more reliable.

The case for easier IndieWeb

Reblog from my blog

The IndieWeb is great. Between WebMention and ActivityPub I feel like I have an audience again. However, I only have access to those protocols because someone smarter than me made WordPress plugins.

The truth is that, prior to this essay, all of IndieWeb felt entirely beyond me. I did not understand what it did sometimes. Even if I understood, I did not always understand what the point was. When I understood the point, I did not always understand the technical bits enough to implement or use it. That pretty much just left bits of microformats.

The IndieWeb ideas have transformative power. They allow us to make connections, own our data and online identity. There is even more it can do if someone would just show us the way.

If as a professional developer who thinks rolling up an object-oriented CMS from scratch sounds like a fun time (me) struggles, how much harder will it be for ordinary people with actual lives to live?

There needs to be a less intense onboarding process. IndieWeb must become something that is at least as easy as WordPress (ideally much easier) so that its power can reach the masses. Right now, we are far from mass market appeal but I think we can get there.

We need a whole galaxy of options.

So that next time we say to someone: “You should own your own domain, and publish on your own website,” and they answer with “How?”, we can give an answer that’s more than just: “Install WordPress.”

This is a single section from a much bigger post discussion of making the IndieWeb easier.

There’s one for sure - Fedipage - and I saw a number of tutorials/blog entries (especially from #indieweb community ❤️) for one or another feature #integration.
