Recent thing on my website, How to sync Lire with Miniflux https://robertkingett.com/posts/6493/ #IndieWeb #SmallWeb

It has occurred to me that I've had this profile for a good minute now, and haven't done an introduction yet. Soo...hi! I'm Piper.

I'm a professional illustrator and underground cartoonist (who you may know under a slightly different former name), as well as a musician, (former) chef, and resident jazz DJ over on https://datafruits.fm.

You can find my illustration work portfolio over at https://sarahallenreed.com (until I move the domain name over to my current moniker; I'll update this once I've found the time to do so). I also keep a little #Indieweb -esque blog over at https://truckstop.coffee, if you want to read it.

I tend to use Mastodon more for unfiltered thoughts, goofin' about and makin' friends than for promotion, but you'll occasionally see me postin' stuff I'm working on, things I'm putting out into the world, and that sort of thing.

Mostly, though, it'll be things I'm hacking on, food I've cooked, cigars and pipe tobaccos I've enjoyed, records I'm listening to, glamour shots of my beloved typewriter and word processor collection, and cute pics of my even-more-beloved doggo, Polyhymnia.

With that stated, here's a few photos of things I think represent what I'm on about fairly well, as well as a photo of me and my beloved fuzzy idiot. Feel free to say hi down below. I look forward to interacting with all of you!

Tomorrow at 8am CET I'm publishing a post/newsletter about how ChatGPT 4 solved that Captcha. Except it didn't.

A few things:

* We should stop being surprised by digital algorithms solving digital challenges faster than humans.
* Captchas were being solved by computers back in 2013. Eleven years is a long time for us to then get a tool like ChatGPT that could not solve it.
* Captchas were never easy to solve for humans (and by design impossible for many)
* One reason Captchas kept being pushed was because we were all being used as free labor by Google for training AI, since 2014. Before training AI, we were transcribing books.
* It's estimated that 500 human years are wasted every single day — just for us to 'prove our humanity'.
* Tech progress isn't as fast as everyone is led to believe. It's either heavily misrepresented, or sometimes we're just late at becoming aware.
* An AI trained on George Carlin's material wrote new material. Not. Because actually humans wrote it.
* I've also added a video of Musk promising full self-driving "next year", every year since 2014.

I write a lot about digital ethics and human rights in tech. If you're curious I'd love to see you as a subscriber.

There's a traditional newsletter or you can opt for the RSS feed(!). You actually don't have to disclose personal data to subscribe to my content, which I believe was always what I loved about the early blogosphere.

Also, it's free and open to anyone:

More on why you should have a website

A website, or anything interactive, is inherently unfinished. It’s imperfect—maybe sometimes it even has a few bugs. But that’s the beauty of it. Websites are living, temporal spaces. What happens to websites after death, anyway? What are you waiting for? …

@tantek.com A good read, thank you!

One change I’ve been making myself over the past few years in this vein is to switch, as much as possible, to serving statically built sites using JS only as progressive enhancement, and serving them over #IPFS.

IPFS means anyone else can play a part in storing and serving my sites for as long or as little as they want, and I can (and do!) offer to “pin” other #IndieWeb sites on my #homelab 😊 https://byjp.fyi/indieweb-ipfs

Maybe this helps a little!

New this week: the #IndieWeb community deployed a major modern update to the design, usability, and cross-device support of the https://indieweb.org/ home page and wiki in general! In brief:

* Updated MediaWiki install, updated themes, better mobile device support
* New default theme: Vector (2022), the same as English Wikipedia
* Lots of CSS fixes for content, sidebars, etc.
* Home page content simplification and more pleasing design update

Lots more details on the 2024 homepage and design update project page:
* https://indieweb.org/2024/homepage

This was a community effort, with many people pitching in with major & minor contributions, spending weeks, days, hours, or a few minutes here and there helping out.  From server work, to PHP coding, to HTML+CSS (re)coding, to testing variants of MediaWiki themes, browsers, and devices.

Huge thanks in particular to @PaulRobertLloyd.com (@paulrobertlloyd@mastodon.social) for both driving this design update (e.g. said project page) and doing the heavy lifting of debugging, patching, and testing the latest MediaWiki Vector theme, documenting before & after screenshots, and @AaronParecki.com (@aaronpk@aaronparecki.com @aaronpk) for all the server-side software updates, PHP/IndieAuth wrangling, and critical devops too.

Go try the new https://indieweb.org/ on any browser, on any device, and share your experience!

2023 Blogging Project Recap

In 2023, I attempted to write 100 posts of at least 100 words, inspired by some other blogging projects I saw promoted as part of the IndieWeb revival.

Unsurprisingly, I fell a little short. It’s unsurprising because there were some summer months where I really stepped away from this blog and only got maybe one entry in per month. Then there were weeks […]

I made a thing in php. https://social.marisabel.nl still a lot to add like automatic links, callbacks, and images. But once it is all I want, I can try to make it federated. It's fun, but HARD. At least it has rss. #indieweb
