        "html": "<p>I\u2019ve been in D\u00fcsseldorf since Friday evening, but not for <a href=\"https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/dusseldorf-2024\">Beyond Tellerand</a>. I was in Leeds at the beginning of May, but not for <a href=\"https://heypresents.com/conferences/2024/\">All Day Hey</a>. Being in the same city as a conference, yet not in attendance, is a running theme.</p><p>At <a href=\"https://border-none.net/2023/\">border:none</a> in Nuremberg last year, I spent most of the second day exploring the <a href=\"https://dbmuseum.de/en/nuremberg\">railway museum</a>. When I attended Beyond Tellerand in <a href=\"https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/berlin-2017\">Berlin in 2017</a>, I ducked out to visit the <a href=\"https://www.ddr-museum.de/en\">DDR Museum</a>.</p><p>I don\u2019t enjoy conferences, and I think I\u2019ve finally reached a point of acceptance where I stop buying tickets in the hope that I will.</p><p>What is it about conferences that agitates me?</p><p>Maybe I don\u2019t like listening to other people! I certainly find myself becoming overly critical, mentally marking the content of a talk against my own ideas and value system (such that it is), grumbling under my breath whenever I don\u2019t agree with something.</p><p>I also know that for a presentation to be engaging and effective, nuance can give way to oversimplification and exaggeration. Should a speaker start lecturing an audience \u2013 and a few do \u2013 I can barely contain my annoyance.</p><p>And I really don\u2019t like being around large groups of people.</p><p>But! If I\u2019m speaking at a conference however, my attitude changes. It\u2019s like a cheat code for my brain, forcing me to flip into a more open and engaging mode of operation. Of course, this could all be a matter of ego, preferring the sound of my own voice<a href=\"https://paulrobertlloyd.com/2024/135/a1/conferences/#fn1\">1</a> and being the center of attention.</p><p>Oh dear.</p><p>Thing is, I\u2019ve always enjoyed my own company and I much prefer being in smaller groups. I also learn by doing, which is the complete opposite of what many conferences offer.</p><p>While it\u2019s tempting to adopt a non-conference policy, to lean into the more unsociable and introverted parts of my personality, this isn\u2019t the way to live a healthy and fulfilling life.</p><p>Perhaps the answer lies in the <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference\">unconference</a>; smaller events with the option to present on a topic without it being a big pressured thing. That includes events like <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/indiewebcamp\">IndieWebCamp</a> \u2013 the excuse I used to visit D\u00fcsseldorf.
