I'm about to go to sleep but I just wanted to share one last thought I had regarding Google Gemini, AI/LLM search, and the future of the web.
I've been feeling pretty pessimistic about it, but one positive thing I considered is that this might force content creators and publishers to become less reliant on Google and traffic from search, and instead make their websites a more user-friendly destination.
The #indieweb has the right Idea. Hopefully mainstream content creators will catch on so we can save the web.

"html": "<p>As <a href=\"https://paulrobertlloyd.com/2024/135/a1/conferences/\">mentioned in my last post</a>, I was in D\u00fcsseldorf last weekend for <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2024/D%C3%BCsseldorf\">IndieWebCamp</a>. Organisation was haphazard and last minute meaning attendance was low, but it was a good opportunity to meet and catch-up with other members of the community.</p><p>The first day of an IndieWebCamp is used for discussion and for the final session of the day <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/2024/D%C3%BCsseldorf/Principles\">I proposed a discussion around principles</a>. The IndieWeb has <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/principles\">11 principles</a>, but having faced scrutiny and <a href=\"https://darthmall.net/weblog/2024/indieweb-is-for-devs/\">criticism</a>, I wondered if now was the time to review their relevance and composition.</p><p>I was curious how they originated and whether they still match the aspirations and goals of the community as it stands in 2024. When people ask what is the IndieWeb, and who is it for, do its principles hinder more than they help?</p><h2>First principles</h2><p>The first principle states:</p><blockquote><p><strong>Own your data.</strong> Your content, your metadata, your identity.</p></blockquote><p>There are few issues with this. Firstly, the language (data, metadata, identity) speaks a narrow audience. Furthermore, while owning your identity is mentioned, it could be considered a separate principle, not least because having your own domain name makes owning your data online possible.</p><p>The second principle states:</p><blockquote><p><strong>Use and publish visible data.</strong> For humans first, machines second.</p></blockquote><p>Again, this addresses a narrow audience, appealing more to spec authors than people who want to publish online. Principles 3 to 10 continue in a similar vein.</p><p>It\u2019s only when you get to the final principle that you\u2019ll find something a little more creatively-minded:</p><blockquote><p><strong>Above all, have fun.</strong> When the web took off in the 90\u2019s people began designing personal sites with tools such as GeoCities. If you have a website at your own domain \u2013 and you\u2019re having fun with it \u2013 you\u2019re part of the indie web.</p><p>If you\u2019re building a service that makes it easy for people to publish content to a website at their own domain while providing them with access and control of their content, you\u2019re part of the indie web.</p><p>If you\u2019re designing a protocol to help people authenticate, publish and communicate online using their own domain name, you\u2019re part of the indie web.</p><h2>Development principles</h2><p>The simplicity and broader applicability of these core principles allow for a separate set to be aimed squarely at those designing and building IndieWeb software, protocols and formats:</p><ol><li><p><strong>\ud83c\udf69 Make it user-centred</strong><br />Usability is more important than protocols, formats, data models, schema etc. Start with user needs, and figure out how to build the simplest, easiest and most minimal solution that can address them.</p></li><li><p><strong>\ud83e\udd6a Make what you need</strong><br />Don\u2019t design for a hypothetical user as they may not exist. Make something that satisfies your own needs, first.</p></li><li><p><strong>\ud83c\udf7d\ufe0f Use what you make</strong><br />Personal use can help you uncover problems and areas for improvement more quickly. Focus on solving real problems instead of theoretical ones.</p></li><li><p><strong>\ud83c\udf6d Make it your way</strong><br />We can innovate faster if everyone builds what works for them and we figure out how to interoperate between different approaches later. Having a plurality of projects makes the indie web more inclusive than other open source efforts.</p></li><li><p><strong>\ud83c\udf2e Make it open</strong><br />Building software collectively and in the open instead of privately and in the abstract means it is more likely to be used. Making your code open source means other people can build upon what you\u2019ve made.</p></li><li><p><strong>\ud83c\udf71 Make it modular</strong><br />The more modular your code is, the less dependent you\u2019ll be on a particular device, interface, API, programming language, storage model or platform. Modularity increases the chances that parts of it will be re-used and improved, changes which you can reincorporate later.</p></li><li><p><strong>\ud83d\udcd6 Document what you make</strong><br />Document your process, ideas, designs and code. Help others benefit from your journey \u2014 including your future self!</p></li><li><p><strong>\ud83e\udd6b Make it last</strong><br />If society can preserve ancient papyrus, Victorian photographs and dinosaur bones, we should be able to build durable web technology that doesn\u2019t require destroying everything every few years in the name of progress.</p></li></ol><p>This is a slight reworking of the remaining principles, updating titles to include \u2018make\u2019 so they work as a cohesive set and help identify their target audience<a href=\"https://paulrobertlloyd.com/2024/136/a1/indieweb_principles/#fn1\">1</a>. They could be expanded upon or possibly even condensed.</p><p>A way to summarise these might be to say that IndieWeb software should address the needs set out in the core principles by being user centred, interoperable, modular, open, documented and durable.</p><h2>Putting these principles to the test</h2><p>Is a profile on Mastodon part of the IndieWeb? No. What if you\u2019re using your domain name in your username? Still no; you don\u2019t have control of your own data, even though there\u2019s a degree of portability. What if you\u2019re running your own ActivityPub server? Maybe in this case, yes \u2013 though I doubt you\u2019ll be having much fun!</p><p>Is ActivityPub an IndieWeb technology? Maybe? It\u2019s an open standard. Whether it\u2019s interoperable, modular and durable, I\u2019ll let others be the judge. It\u2019s also difficult to implement, but building a Webmention endpoint is no walk in the park, either.</p><p>Is a website on Squarespace part of the IndieWeb? If it\u2019s at your own domain, I guess so. But what if Squarespace were to disappear tomorrow (who knows what horrors lie in store <a href=\"https://investors.squarespace.com/news-events-financials/investor-news/news-details/2024/Squarespace-to-Go-Private-in-6.9B-All-Cash-Transaction-with-Permira/default.aspx\">now that it\u2019s set to go private</a>). Are you able to export your content, and can it be hosted elsewhere? Possibly, but it all feels very proprietary, with a good deal of lock-in (but that\u2019s true of every CMS).</p><p>Is Squarespace an IndieWeb technology? Absolutely not. It\u2019s closed-sourced, not interoperable or modular, and if you look at the code it generates, hardly built to last.</p><h2>Feedback</h2><p>What do you think? The IndieWeb has 11 principles, but having faced scrutiny and criticism, I wondered if now was the time to review their relevance and composition.\n\nI was curious how they originated and whether they still match the aspirations and goals of the community as it stands in 2024. When people ask what is the IndieWeb, and who is it for, do its principles hinder more than they help?First principlesThe first principle states:Own your data. Your content, your metadata, your identity.There are few issues with this. Firstly, the language (data, metadata, identity) speaks a narrow audience. Furthermore, while owning your identity is mentioned, it could be considered a separate principle, not least because having your own domain name makes owning your data online possible.\n\nThe second principle states:Use and publish visible data. For humans first, machines second.Again, this addresses a narrow audience, appealing more to spec authors than people who want to publish online. "html": "<p>I\u2019ve been in D\u00fcsseldorf since Friday evening, but not for <a href=\"https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/dusseldorf-2024\">Beyond Tellerand</a>. I was in Leeds at the beginning of May, but not for <a href=\"https://heypresents.com/conferences/2024/\">All Day Hey</a>. Being in the same city as a conference, yet not in attendance, is a running theme.</p><p>At <a href=\"https://border-none.net/2023/\">border:none</a> in Nuremberg last year, I spent most of the second day exploring the <a href=\"https://dbmuseum.de/en/nuremberg\">railway museum</a>. When I attended Beyond Tellerand in <a href=\"https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/berlin-2017\">Berlin in 2017</a>, I ducked out to visit the <a href=\"https://www.ddr-museum.de/en\">DDR Museum</a>.</p><p>I don\u2019t enjoy conferences, and I think I\u2019ve finally reached a point of acceptance where I stop buying tickets in the hope that I will.</p><p>What is it about conferences that agitates me?</p><p>Maybe I don\u2019t like listening to other people! I certainly find myself becoming overly critical, mentally marking the content of a talk against my own ideas and value system (such that it is), grumbling under my breath whenever I don\u2019t agree with something.</p><p>I also know that for a presentation to be engaging and effective, nuance can give way to oversimplification and exaggeration. Should a speaker start lecturing an audience \u2013 and a few do \u2013 I can barely contain my annoyance.</p><p>And I really don\u2019t like being around large groups of people.</p><p>But! If I\u2019m speaking at a conference however, my attitude changes. It\u2019s like a cheat code for my brain, forcing me to flip into a more open and engaging mode of operation. Of course, this could all be a matter of ego, preferring the sound of my own voice<a href=\"https://paulrobertlloyd.com/2024/135/a1/conferences/#fn1\">1</a> and being the center of attention.</p><p>Oh dear.</p><p>Thing is, I\u2019ve always enjoyed my own company and I much prefer being in smaller groups. I also learn by doing, which is the complete opposite of what many conferences offer.</p><p>While it\u2019s tempting to adopt a non-conference policy, to lean into the more unsociable and introverted parts of my personality, this isn\u2019t the way to live a healthy and fulfilling life.</p><p>Perhaps the answer lies in the <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference\">unconference</a>; smaller events with the option to present on a topic without it being a big pressured thing. That includes events like <a href=\"https://indieweb.org/indiewebcamp\">IndieWebCamp</a> \u2013 the excuse I used to visit D\u00fcsseldorf. I certainly find myself becoming overly critical, mentally marking the content of a talk against my own ideas and value system (such that it is), grumbling under my breath whenever I don\u2019t agree with something.\n\nI also know that for a presentation to be engaging and effective, nuance can give way to oversimplification and exaggeration. Should a speaker start lecturing an audience \u2013 and a few do \u2013 I can barely contain my annoyance.\n\nAnd I really don\u2019t like being around large groups of people.\n\nBut! If I\u2019m speaking at a conference however, my attitude changes. It\u2019s like a cheat code for my brain, forcing me to flip into a more open and engaging mode of operation. Of course, this could all be a matter of ego, preferring the sound of my own voice1 and being the center of attention.\n\nOh dear.\n\nThing is, I\u2019ve always enjoyed my own company and I much prefer being in smaller groups. I also learn by doing, which is the complete opposite of what many conferences offer.\n\nWhile it\u2019s tempting to adopt a non-conference policy, to lean into the more unsociable and introverted parts of my personality, this isn\u2019t the way to live a healthy and fulfilling life.\n\nPerhaps the answer lies in the unconference; smaller events with the option to present on a topic without it being a big pressured thing. That includes events like IndieWebCamp \u2013 the excuse I used to visit D\u00fcsseldorf. It has a format that involves active participation and provides a more creative and collaborative space.\n\nI almost proposed a talk for this year\u2019s UX Camp Brighton, should I commit to attending next year\u2019s event?FootnotesI don\u2019t.
