I decided my newsletter will in fact be an exploration of the old web!
Im calling it "I Miss The Old Web" and we'll discuss all the treasures, histories, and lores that cyberspace of yesterday had to offer.
I still have a lot of stuff to do to get going. For now, check out the new website and let me know what you think: http://imisstheoldweb.com

@m2m @chris @grueproof What advice would you all give to individuals without deep IT skills who would like elegantly coded, resource-light, understandable websites for:
- booksite
- archiving text+image articles originally published as social media threads (ideally with comparable ease of use for image sizing & consistent layout)
- web version of talks, words+slides
- permanent personal sites for academics & independent scholars
Searching for 21 months, still stumped...

This is a product of this very-old-school LOTR fan site: https://www.lotrfanmb.com
(It’s got a banner!)
This site is mostly to host the fan forums but it also hosts an archive of fan works like the above. There are some other good “sung to the tune ofs” on there to check out
Gotta love the home grown, creator-owned fan works on display… this was before the “Web 2.0” social media companies centralized and devoured fandom interaction
Hoping the #indieWeb keeps on bringing that spirit back!

Back in June I wrote about an exciting confluence of digital auth tech:
(1) The commodification of #OIDC infrastructure, (2) the emergence of #FedCM, (3) and the compatibility of both with #indieauth .
In short, it is now easier than ever to log into web applications using your own website as an identity provider. Or at least, it would be, if your favorite web apps supported these agency-enhancing technologies.

Hosting your own content is the core of the #indieweb, says @shellsharks
"f you are reading this, or you have a personal site, you are already part of it. Full stop. You don’t need to be shy. You have things to say and people WANT to listen, they want to read, they want to connect. You don’t have to be an “influencer” or have a big following. Your writing doesn’t need to be AMAZING. You don’t need to write to an audience. Write for yourself. Then share it. "

"html": "<p>I enjoy using my own domains \u2014 though I own a few too many! One of them, <code>rrier.fr</code> was originally purchased solely so I could use <a href=\"mailto:pc@rrier.fr\">pc@rrier.fr</a> as my E-mail address.</p>\n<p>Naturally, I wanted to also be known as <a href=\"https://rrier.fr/@pc\">@pc@rrier.fr</a> on the fediverse, as part of owning my online identity. Unfortunately, this turned out more challenging that I expected. Here are a few approaches I tried and what I learned along the way.</p>\n<h2>Forwarding WebFinger</h2>\n<p>My first approach, documented during <a href=\"https://xmit.dev/posts/pcarrier-com/\">my migration to xmit.co</a>, was to set up a WebFinger redirect. <a href=\"https://rrier.fr/.well-known/webfinger\">https://rrier.fr/.well-known/webfinger</a> redirected to <a href=\"https://mastodon.social/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct%3Apcarrier%40mastodon.social\">https://mastodon.social/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct%3Apcarrier%40mastodon.social</a>, the WebFinger URL for <a href=\"https://mastodon.social/@pcarrier\">@pcarrier@mastodon.social</a>.</p>\n<p>This let people search for <code>@pc@rrier.fr</code> and find an account. Unfortunately, that indirection would be resolved right there and then: they would then see and follow the <a href=\"https://mastodon.social\">mastodon.social</a> account. I couldn't move providers without breakage.</p>\n<p>I wanted more control over where my content is hosted and stored authoritatively. Onto what seemed like the natural solution.</p>\n<h2>Running <a href=\"https://joinmastodon.org/\">Mastodon</a></h2>\n<p>In my opinion, for a single customer, a server requires too much setup and maintenance work, and too many resources. I gave up a few steps into an installation when I realized the amount of memory my VPS would probably need, so I can't say much more.</p>\n<p>I looked around, and found what I think is a better solution for my needs:</p>\n<h2>Running <a href=\"https://gotosocial.org/\">GoToSocial</a></h2>\n<p>Setup was a breeze. Everything is lightweight and fast. I have minor complaints, notably lack of edit capability (already on the <a href=\"https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/blob/main/ROADMAP.md\">roadmap</a>), but it's a fantastic piece of software.</p>\n<p>It does, however, suffer from what appear to be limitations inherent to the design of the fediverse:</p>\n<ul><li>\n<p>My server is federated with over 2000 other instances, but I don't see their content when looking up or following a hashtag. My server only finds stuff that already appeared in the timeline of my lone user\u2026 Makes following hashtags pointless, something that I found super valuable when I was on a big instance.</p>\n</li>\n<li>\n<p>I can't boost or reply to toots of people I don't already follow, unless they were boosted by the accounts my server follows\u2026 Following them doesn't backfill their history on my server, so the existing toot remains out of reach.</p>\n</li>\n</ul><p>I'd love to learn that those issues can be addressed without protocol changes, or that such protocol changes are underway. One of them, rrier.fr was originally purchased solely so I could use pc@rrier.fr as my E-mail address.\nNaturally, I wanted to also be known as @pc@rrier.fr on the fediverse, as part of owning my online identity. Unfortunately, this turned out more challenging that I expected. Here are a few approaches I tried and what I learned along the way.\nForwarding WebFinger\nMy first approach, documented during my migration to xmit.co, was to set up a WebFinger redirect. https://rrier.fr/.well-known/webfinger redirected to https://mastodon.social/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct%3Apcarrier%40mastodon.social, the WebFinger URL for @pcarrier@mastodon.social.\nThis let people search for @pc@rrier.fr and find an account. Unfortunately, that indirection would be resolved right there and then: they would then see and follow the mastodon.social account. I couldn't move providers without breakage.\nI wanted more control over where my content is hosted and stored authoritatively. Onto what seemed like the natural solution.\nRunning Mastodon\nIn my opinion, for a single customer, a server requires too much setup and maintenance work, and too many resources. I gave up a few steps into an installation when I realized the amount of memory my VPS would probably need, so I can't say much more.\nI looked around, and found what I think is a better solution for my needs:\nRunning GoToSocial\nSetup was a breeze. Everything is lightweight and fast. I have minor complaints, notably lack of edit capability (already on the roadmap), but it's a fantastic piece of software.\nIt does, however, suffer from what appear to be limitations inherent to the design of the fediverse:\n\nMy server is federated with over 2000 other instances, but I don't see their content when looking up or following a hashtag. My server only finds stuff that already appeared in the timeline of my lone user\u2026 Makes following hashtags pointless, something that I found super valuable when I was on a big instance.\n\n\nI can't boost or reply to toots of people I don't already follow, unless they were boosted by the accounts my server follows\u2026 Following them doesn't backfill their history on my server, so the existing toot remains out of reach.\n\nI'd love to learn that those issues can be addressed without protocol changes, or that such protocol changes are underway. In the meantime, I've learnt to live with those grievances."

If even long-time production-tested complex systems frequently fail, why do some people still maintain the illusion that a newly developed complex system, with each component created by a different developer, will function flawlessly when its parts assemble in production for the first time within the expected deadline?

Thinking again on learning enough HTML to pass making a neocities site has been pretty rewarding so far, but I cannot stress enough that I have to be in "focus and problem solving" mode, which is sometimes not easy to be in, or stay in. (ADHD WOOOO)
https://www.w3schools.com/html
, and the neocities reddit have been great wells of knowledge for things that I know are simple, but still struggling with so far.
That being said. I fixed all the links from opening new tabs, THEN I set up a comment for myself in the future so I don't make the same mistake!
I'm liking this a lot so far, and even if I did have to rebuild my artist website, it suddenly doesn't feel so out of reach....

Freut mich sehr!

I'm talking about Aliens! But why aren't they talking back?
Read my blog summarizing a really cool hypothesis to the Fermi Paradox that was shared on the ArXiv last month.

I made a neat image annotation widget for my blog using OpenSeadragon and Annotorious: https://thzinc.com/2024/09/04/a-bike-tool-roll-made-from-a-canvas-bag.html
I tried to ensure this was still usable with a screen reader–I think I did okay?
