and one more small #blog update this evening
also while trying to link my bluesky to twitter I stumbled upon brid.gy classic
which led me to https://indiewebify.me
the idea of federated webmentions sounds nice, but oh dear is the execution flunked, or maybe the initiative just died half way
feels as complicated as internet felt when I first got online... maybe it's the bane of open standards and networks
walled gardens can be stupidly simple because the user has no choice, but in a open ecosystem you must give the user choice which necessarily complicates things
I wrote a post on my journey from Wordpress to Windrunner, my own custom static site generator.
Tried to keep it brief. Enjoy!
Jeff Veen: I still feel like literally anybody with an idea can start hacking on the web or making apps or things like that. That’s all still there. I think the nucleus of what we started back then still exists on the web, and it still makes me really, really happy. https://www.wired.com/story/we-were-wrong-oral-history-hotwired/ #indieweb
📝 Use cURL and jq to Send Webmentions from Hacker News
Hacker News doesn’t send Webmentions when a post is created like Lobste.rs will, and there’s not currently a service on sites like Brid.gy that will provide them for you. Even the Hacker News API doesn’t provide search or filtering by site. Luckily, there is a service provided by Algolia that ...

Hey bloggers and #WebDev if you want readers, if you want to make it easy to share your new thing, seriously stop hiding your RSS feeds. If I can't find your RSS feed, I just won't bother with following you or reading future work from you. If I absolutely need a blog in my life I will hunt it down but you get 5 minutes. If you hidden it so well I can't find it, your publication will never be read or shared again by me unless it crosses my path again and the chances of that happening are far slimmer than you think. Make it easy to follow you. Make it easy to keep up with posts without giving you my email. At least 99% of the stuff I share comes from RSS feeds. If you want more readers, wave your RSS feed like a banner! #RSS #Blog #Blogging #IndieWeb
It seems popular to mention ones Blue Sky account on social media locales that are not Blue Sky so here's my Blue Sky account: https://bsky.app/profile/artlung.com. -- The planet is chaos and I'm glad to also have my personal website with its blog and contact form chugging along fine since ~1999 and will outlast any silo that I happen to live longer than. So far https://artlung.com/ has defeated Friendster, Yahoo!Groups, MySpace, Google+, Del.icio.us, Orkut, etc etc etc etc etc etc

At one point in life, I realised that I could either spend 8 hours a day working as a software developer writing code - or I could spend that same time inspiring and helping other people from different walks of life to get excited about technology and learn development.
That's been my guiding principle for almost a decade now.
I wrote about it for this month's #IndieWeb Carnival, hosted by @xandra

@smsm1 @cryptadamist @cybeardjm That way you pay for your hosting and your consumption separately, so if Bluesky the client goes nuts that only disrupts the consumption part, not the publication part, and you can swap to a new consumption stack that’s run by someone else
Whereas in Mastodon – if you change your consumption stack you also need to swap your publication server
#IndieWeb is like Bluesky and handles publication and consumption separately
@smsm1 @cryptadamist @cybeardjm Whereas Mastodon is:
- One instance that’s data store, lookup service, aggregator and client all in one and which third party clients talk to through a non-standardized API
So Bluesky is more like the #IndieWeb in that you can easily self host your own “web site” / profile without having to also self-host the aggregators etc needed for consumption.
