I really like personal homepages and have quite a list of them bookmarked. I'll post one every week unless I fall behind this schedule. 😉 So here's Cool Personal Homepages #CPH Vol. 36: "Ninji's Website" https://wuffs.org/

@cory Yeah for links there's kind of so much overhead to it I am happy to outsource it. I almost did my RSS reading there but that has been okay on my own machine. I may switch from PikaPods but for now it's performant, cheap, and a great relief from doing ops/"admintax" as we say in #IndieWeb circles.
And I still dig Linkding. Terrific tool, amazing to be able to inspect my links across time to find stuff I forgot and want to remember. https://artlung.com/blog/2024/10/31/owning-my-own-bookmarks-over-20-years/

Does anyone know of a tool that randomly pulls older posts from a blog's archive via RSS?
Sometimes I discover a blog and I think it's interesting to see the older posts. So if a tool could show me an older post from the archive every day, that would be great!
I’ve been tagged in a good ol’-fashioned memetic chain letter, first by Jon and then by Luke. Only by answering these questions can my soul find peace…

Why did you start blogging in the first place?

All the cool kids were doing it. I distinctly remember thinking it was far too late to start blogging. Clearly I had missed the boat. That was in the year 2001.

So if you’re ever thinking of starting something but you think it might be too late …it isn’t.

Back then, I wrote:

I’ll try and post fairly regularly but I don’t want to make any promises I can’t keep.

I’m glad I didn’t commit myself but I’m also glad that I’m still posting 24 years later.

What platform are you using to manage your blog and why did you choose it? Have you blogged on other platforms before?

I use my own hand-cobbled mix of PHP and MySQL. Before that I had my own hand-cobbled mix of PHP and static XML files.

On the one hand, I wouldn’t recommend anybody to do what I’ve done. Just use an off-the-shelf content management system and start publishing.

On the other hand, the code is still working fine decades later (with the occasional tweak) and the control freak in me likes knowing what every single line of code is doing.

It’s very bare-bones though.

How do you write your posts? For example, in a local editing tool, or in a panel/dashboard that’s part of your blog?

I usually open a Mardown text editor and write in that. I use the Mac app Focused which was made by Realmac software. I don’t think you can even get hold of it these days, but it does the job for me. Any Markdown text editor would do though.

Then I copy what I’ve written and paste it into the textarea of my hand-cobbled CMS. It’s pretty rare for me to write directly into that textarea.

When do you feel most inspired to write?

When I’m supposed to be doing something else.

Blogging is the greatest procrastination tool there is. You’re skiving off doing the thing you should be doing, but then when you’ve published the blog post, you’ve actually done something constructive so you don’t feel too bad about avoiding that thing you were supposed to be doing.

Sometimes it takes me a while to get around to posting something. I find myself blogging out loud to my friends, which is a sure sign that I need to sit down and bash out that blog post.

When there’s something I’m itching to write about but I haven’t ’round to it yet, it feels a bit like being constipated. Then, when I finally do publish that blog post, it feels like having a very satisfying bowel movement.

No doubt it reads like that too.

Do you publish immediately after writing, or do you let it simmer a bit as a draft?

I publish immediately. I’ve never kept drafts. Usually I don’t even save theMarkdown file while I’m writing—I open up the text editor, write the words, copy them, paste them into that textarea and publish it. Often it takes me longer to think of a title than it takes to write the actual post.

I try to remind myself to read it through once to catch any typos, but sometimes I don’t even do that. And you know what? That’s okay. It’s the web. I can go back and edit it at any time. Besides, if I miss a typo, someone else will catch it and let me know.

Speaking for myself, putting something into a draft (or even just putting it on a to-do list) is a guarantee that it’ll never get published. So I just write and publish. It works for me, though I totally understand that it’s not for everyone.

What’s your favourite post on your blog?

I’ve got a little section of “recommended reading” in the sidebar of my journal:

Split
Web! What is it good for?
Seams
Hyperdrive
Design doing
Iron Man and me
But I’m not sure I could pick just one.

I’m very proud of the time I wrote 100 posts in 100 days and each post was exactly 100 words long. That might be my favourite tag.

Any future plans for your blog? Maybe a redesign, a move to another platform, or adding a new feature?

I like making little incremental changes. Usually this happens at Indie Web Camps. I add some little feature or tweak.

I definitely won’t be redesigning. But I might add another “skin” or two. I’ve got one of those theme-switcher things, y’see. It was like a little CSS Zen Garden before that existed. I quite like having redesigns that are cumulative instead of destructive.

Next?

You. Yes, you.",

In late 2023, I gave myself a very loose challenge to listen to one distinct album each day(-ish). I wrote a post about the first week and after that I tried to keep track of them offline in Obsidian. I didn’t do it every day or always keep track of it very well, but that’s alright.

The handful that I did track were pretty balanced between new-to-me albums and new releases by artists I follow. I had forgotten about a couple of these since they were one-listens — not usually because I didn’t enjoy it, but it’s easy to get distracted by old and new favorites. There’s always so much music!

New to me

Sleater-Kinney, Little Rope (2024): A band I’ve known of for a while, but had never really listened to much.
The Rentals, Lost in Alphaville (2014): A vinyl guy on TikTok was raving about this album. It lived up to the hype and is one of my favorite finds of the year. Somehow I had not heard of The Rentals, despite it being Matt Sharp, formerly of Weezer.
The Warning, Keep Me Fed (2024): A really solid rock album by some mujeres Mexicanas. I’m a sucker for ladies who rock.
Chappell Roan, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (2023): Another favorite of the year. I hope it wins the Grammy. “Um, can you play a song with a fucking beat?!”
julie, my anti-aircraft friend (2024): I came across a fellow GenX on TikTok who publishes the blog “New Music for Old Heads” and this album in one of their best-of posts caught my attention because shoegaze.
Aside: I love the idea of that blog and recommend it:

“This is a place for people who want to get into new music but feel overwhelmed by it, or maybe even think it hasn’t been good since [insert whatever decade it was that you were in your 20s]. Basically, I’m trying to get you excited about music discovery again.”
— New Music for Old Heads

New-ish by artists I follow

Interestingly, several of these were one-listens, but writing this reminds me to listen to them more.

Oh Land, Loop Soup (2023)
Casandra Jenkins, My Light, My Detroyer (2024)
DK the Drummer, Lockers Volume 1 (2024): Darren King, former drummer of Mutemath. This is a fun, high energy album with a lot of great collaborations.
Thomas Powers, A Tyrant Crying in Private (2024): solo album from singer of The Naked and Famous
Lauren Mayberry, Vicious Creature (2024): solo album from the singer of Chvrches
Concerts

I only attended a couple concerts this year: Zoe Boekbinder’s Covid cautious backyard concert and Five Iron Frenzy with their old-school set. Both were a lot of fun!

I had a ticket for Sixpence None the Richer at the end of the year but unfortunately missed it. :/

Scrobbles

If you’re not familiar, “scrobbles” are the song listening data you can send to Libre.fm, Last.fm, or similar services. I’ve been on Last.fm for a long time, but I haven’t checked it in quite a while. There was a time when scrobbling stopped working on Android due to some security updates, so a good chunk of my listens from my phone weren’t reported. I just played around with some settings and got it working again, though! That’s why my 2024 listening report is kind of slim.

My top artist was Cinnamon Chasers, mostly Dopamine (2024): great electronic music to work to
Runner up was BT, The Secret Language of Trees (2023): some chill ambient music, also great to work to
2,791 listens; 309 artists; 452 albums; 2,154 tracks
54% new artists; 72% new albums; 55% new tracks; among my small set of friends on Last.fm, I apparently came in first for percentage of new artists
My first track of the year was apparently “Speak to Me” by Pink Floyd. I’m not a huge Pink Floyd fan, but I was talking to someone who had never listened to them before so decided to give it another listen.
I apparently listened to 14 tracks with “fire” in the title
I joined Libre.fm in September, so only have a few months of listens in my 2024 recap. I’m glad there’s an indieweb version of services like this. Boards of Canada came in first over there, since I finally listened to most of their catalog for the first time (I know).

What were some of your (new or old) favorites that you listened to last year? Happy new year of music!",

Ok, so this is what I'm thinking about building for blogs & posting:
* an #11ty static website
* a web frontend to write markdown
* when content is longer than masto/bluesky character limits, posts get broken into threads in a side panel
* on submit, send to a #micropub endpoint, masto, and bluesky
* micropub endpoint saves .md in a private repo, triggering an 11ty rebuild and deploy with the new post

First Blog post is up on the site, talking about the tools I use to create the site.

I made sure to assign blame to certain folks, granted they hold only 0.01% of it, the rest is on me. This as good as those sysadmin wings coming in @jimsalter

This "remote text" shortcode in Tabi is pretty cool. Basically I can embed any text, from my repo, or even over http, and render it into my markdown file before my site is being built.
https://welpo.github.io/tabi/blog/shortcodes/#remote-text
I'm using it for the code snippets on this page: https://nizzlay.com/blog/changes-2025-01-23/
Which now means that if I updated the code, my article would update automatically as well, never needing to manually keep it up to date. 🥳

Let's go on with the roundup of my #tinyLibreTools of the past year. MyFFFonts is a local-first, browser-based webfonts manager. Dedicated to quickly enabling the testing of webfonts you own/downloaded, it has evolved into a font gallery that manages uploading and downloading of fonts packs + stylesheet, ready to be tried out in your #indieweb pages. The name stands for My Formidable Free Fonts, and is a solemn declaration of my immense gratitude for all the wonderful free font creators out there. Thanks. A. Lot. The code is here: https://codeberg.org/julienbidoret/myfffonts, the demo there: https://myfffonts.accentgrave.net/

I'd love to hear from folks who have been thinking about making a website for themselves and finding existing tools and tutorials less approachable.
What kind of websites are you interested in making? What tools have you tried? What didn't work for you?
