        "html": "<p>A guide to <a class=\"u-in-reply-to\" href=\"https://unplatform.fromthesuperhighway.com/\">leaving social media</a>.</p><p>As with all of these things, there\u2019s a cohort of people for whom modern social media (\u201cWeb 2.0\u201d) <em>is</em> what they want out of the internet. For whatever reason, these people are no more likely to pull up sticks and join the indieweb now than they were to roll a blog or run a personal collective back in the early 2000s (or a newsgroup or BBS before that). They\u2019re also the people most likely to get annoyed by any attempt to get them to do so. This class of people also includes most anyone with an Extremely Online career \u2014 influencers, journalists, \u201ccreators\u201d and so on \u2014 which I think is why fedi and the indieweb tend to get such a beating in \u201cmainstream\u201d outlets (with \u201cmainstream\u201d being defined here in the modern sense of \u201canyone with, or trying to create, a monetisable broadcast channel\u201d).</p><p>So. This is not for them. Is <em>is</em> for anyone, however, who enjoys Doing Things Online as a hobby, not a career (potential or actual). For anyone who wants the small scale, the friction, the jank, the weirdness. Who wants to sit in front of text editors and command lines. Wants to do things the old way, the slow way. Wants to wrangle and learn technologies and protocols and processes older than they are, older than their <em>parents</em> are, maybe.</p><p>These people have always existed, will always exist; the punks and the weirdos and the outsiders. The internet used to be theirs near entire, and while that hasn\u2019t been true for a lifetime now, there\u2019s still plenty of us around, lurking in our neon-dark and pastel-bright corners. We\u2019re at a point where it\u2019s only prudent to view third-parties as guilty until proven innocent. Yet I have conflicting thoughts on it.</p>\n<p>I admire that the team is trying to think through the safety ramifications. I\u2019ve long said we should not blindly copy features from the big silo platforms. A platform like Mastodon that doesn\u2019t have ads also doesn\u2019t need engagement-driven features or anything that amplifies hateful behavior. Already in my opinion Mastodon has copied too much from Twitter.</p>\n<p>Quote posts as proposed will be the most visible change to Mastodon\u2019s ActivityPub implementation since the initial rollover from OStatus to ActivityPub. It is not just a new UI and post format, but a system of controlling which posts can be quoted and even optionally notifying users to approve quotes. It adds a lot of complexity.</p>\n<p>In Micro.blog, posts aren\u2019t some special kind of \u201csocial\u201d post the exists apart from the web. Micro.blog posts are blog posts. Quoting uses <code>&lt;blockquote&gt;</code>, and our web UI for embedding a post uses <a href=\"https://quotebacks.net/\">Quotebacks</a>. The most straightforward way to support Mastodon quote posts when we receive them from Mastodon will be to essentially convert them to use <code>&lt;blockquote&gt;</code>.</p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need permission to quote something on the web. It has always been assumed fair use to quote a snippet of someone else\u2019s blog post and add your own commentary. This is a foundational part of link blogs and IndieWeb-style blog conversations. It is already common to embed a Mastodon post by making it a <code>&lt;blockquote&gt;</code> with relevant attribution.</p>\n<p>So what is special about Mastodon that requires so much technical infrastructure to support something so simple? I think it\u2019s about speed and reach. For someone living in a social app like Mastodon, a quick boost or quote post that is shared to potentially many followers has an outsized impact relative to how little thought it requires. There is also a culture in Mastodon of treating posts as semi-protected within the Mastodon ecosystem. There is a strong sense of privacy and anonymity.</p>\n<p>Consider the following two scenarios. First on Mastodon, the scenario the Mastodon team wants to discourage:</p>\n<ol><li>User clicks \u201cquote post\u201d and adds the comment \u201cThis person is terrible\u201d, exposing the post to their followers for the first time. The followers might have no context for this new person.</li>\n<li>Followers immediately see the quote in their timeline and can react. Hit the like button, reply to pile on, boost.</li>\n<li>Suddenly the original person has a problem and unwanted attention. Negative replies flow in from strangers.</li>\n</ol><p>Compare to the slower, blog-centric workflow:</p>\n<ol><li>User starts a new blog post and pastes in the part they want to quote.</li>\n<li>At this point they could type \u201cThis person is terrible\u201d and call it a day, but\u2026 That doesn\u2019t usually happen. Instead, they add a little more commentary. Maybe a little more context or nuance.
