Of course, if you don't know what "VPN" means (or if you can't be bothered because it reminds you of work too much) that's cool too!
Just pick an instance you feel fine about and remember moving your account to another fedi instance is a thing, and it's not hard to do, so if you no longer feel at home where you are, it is no big deal.
Software/IT professionals/enthusiasts/curious: do you have a handful of bucks/quids/euros to spare a month? Can you find your way around ssh
?
Then you should consider running your personal fediverse instance, just for yourself: it is honestly pretty damn simple.
Get yourself a tiny VPN (1 cpu/2 GiB RAM is plenty), a domain name if you're felling fancy, and deploy your own @gotosocial server: it's incredibly light, super easy to install and update, and perfectly tailored for single user/tiny instances (and consider sparing some change to the devs, as they really do an awesome job!)
Do you want a sustainable web that's independent from big predatory platforms? Because that's how you get a sustainable web that's independent from big predatory platforms!

Surprendido de que nenhum leitor RSS suporte #webmentions (e, em particular, #FreshRSS).
Seria genial poder estar lendo um feed, dar-lhe ao coraçom, e enviar um like à entrada no blogue original.
KrautPress Website Club
https://notiz.blog/2025/02/24/krautpress-website-club/
I see the personal website as being an antidote to the corporate, centralised web. Yeah, sure, it’s probably hosted on someone else’s computer – but it’s a piece of the web that belongs to you. If your host goes down, you can just move it somewhere else, because it’s just HTML.
Sure, it’s not going to fix democracy, or topple the online pillars of capitalism; but it’s making a political statement nonetheless. It says “I want to carve my own space on the web, away from the corporations”. I think this is a radical act. It was when I originally said this in 2022, and I mean it even more today.
today is officially *THREE* weeks until the submission deadline for Good Internet magazine!
Good Internet launches in May 2025. it's a volunteer-run, not-for-profit print and digital quarterly magazine for personal website owners and those interested in using the internet as a means of self-expression, art, and recreation.
🔍 we're looking for 1,500-4,000 word articles about anything related to that!
you could write about:
* #internet history
* personal #websites
* #accessibility on the #indieweb
* finding inspiration for a #blog
* #webdesign trends
* running from the #enshittification of the #web
* lessons or post-mortems from #webdev projects
* news or overviews of #opensource projects
if it relates to hobbies on "this side of the web," whether you call it the #smallweb or indieweb, we probably want to run it!
you can have your article as low-media (meaning only text and images) or interactive, where you code an entire webpage to help tell your story.
if you're interested in learning more, you can sign up for our email list for when we launch or you can check the submission guidelines @ https://goodinternetmagazine.com!
(please boost if you can! <3)
give the brain a lil break today by hacking on the microblog. my books now show up in the activity feed and the reading list RSS feed.
now i'm going to go read my goofy dungeon crawler book
I’m stuck between two names for my blog/zine. Brewmaster (like in homebrew but also the monk variant) or some variation of Barrow-wight. I like intelligent undead and Fellowship of the Ring is amazing plus it is a subtle white box/White hack reference with “wight”.

Announcement: I have a new logo, website, and email address!
You can read more on my New Site Design post: https://futurehorizondesign.net.au/updates.html#new-site-design
This means you can follow my new Mastodon account at https://indieweb.social/@travisj or wait until I set up the alias in a few days. I know I moved to indieweb.social under the 'scope filter' name only recently so I hope the inconvenience is temporary and relatively painless for those who follow me.
Announcement: I have a new logo, website, and email address!
Summary of improvements:
- light and dark mode
- visible skip link
- monochrome isometric icons
- breadcrumb navigation
- long alt text now visible to all users
- indieweb microformats
I see this change as an overall upgrade in functionality, accessibility, and visuals. You can read more on my New Site Design post: futurehorizondesign.net.au/updates.html...
The IndieWeb doesn't need to "take off"
https://blog.x-way.org/Misc/2025/02/23/The-IndieWeb-Doesn-t-Need-to-Take-Off.html
@balint Imagine if a major web search engine service started including page download size including all subresources (from an empty-cache starting point) as an inverse ranking signal.
As in: all else equal, larger pages rank lower.
Forget time to first byte, or time to first render. Let's have time to last byte and time to completed render instead!
Made a custom 404 page for my personal site today to get my mind off…things

@nsmsn recently launched a personal site he rebuilt with #WebOrigami: https://www.nicksimson.com/posts/2025-ye-olde-blogging-questions-challenge
By design Origami’s audience includes creative people that don’t think of themselves as engineers, or primarily as engineers. It’s gratifying that Nick “was able to get this to work the way [his] brain works” and that he finds it fun to use. #indieweb
There! My web site and little corner of the World Wild Web now has a dark mode, too, for those who prefer that. 🌚
It keys off of the visitor's browser preference (using a CSS prefers-color-scheme media query) so should work readily without requiring any special action from anyone.
Also a few other usability and appearance tweaks including easier-to-hit targets on mobile and some font adjustments, and two brand new pages.
I spent last night writing about the things on my site that I am the most proud of https://shellsharks.com/devlog/build-then-smile
The #IndieWeb allows us to express ourselves in many ways, through our writing, through our site aesthetics, etc... over the last 5 years+ I've built a place on the web that I really enjoy hanging out at. So for everyone out there similarly building a digital "home" on the web, remember to look back and smile at what you've accomplished!
