Part II of a write up of a talk I gave on the whys and hows of this blog. Covers the basics of using the SSG #Hugo and sharing posts around on social media.

“This isn’t a time for competition. It is a time for cooperation.” — Evan Prodromou in a panel on different platforms at Fediverse House

Officially launching v1.0 of https://stygiantech.dev today!

Previously this was just a basic landing page, but now it’s got a lot more content to check out!

Just a few minutes in to arriving at Fediverse House and already it was super valuable. There is really nothing like meeting people face to face. It’s an exciting time for the open web and you can feel it in hearing what people are working on and thinking about.

Are there any #indieweb folks in the Columbus, Ohio area?

Big win: conned my health data tech person spouse into helping me get a new #11ty site/blog up and running when they have never done any kind of web building

Now I have to make it cute, learn how it works, write something, and get RSS on this blog. Hanging out in the #32bitcafe forum for more help and understanding. Ppl are so generous.

I want more barely tech literate weirdos like me on the #indieweb . It turns out ppl want to help us figure it out

Published new blog entry on my site: https://www.meeknot.es/p/be-daring/

This one is more on the personal side instead of tech so be warned.

#indieweb

What I absolutely adore about the indie/ personal/ small web: Everybody's approach is very different. There are super modern looking websites and there are the ones who seem to come straight out of the 1990's/ early 2000's. There are ones that are specially made to work on the oldest computers. There are ones with and ones without Java Script. Ones made by pro web devs and ones made my people who are just starting to learn the basics. There are people who've been there from the beginning and those who are very new. And everything in between. People of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.
In visiting personal websites you are seeing and experiencing the diversity of the world. And it's glorious!

Here’s how I really feel about the #IndieWeb “community”. https://davegoesthedistance.com/.well-known/

Common paths for web feeds

Do you follow any #blog about ancient world? Egypt, Rome and so. I’d love to foków some archeologists:-)

I've just tweaked my main RSS feed to incorporate both articles and micro posts... apologies if doing that flooded your feedreader or timeline like it did mine. #indieweb

Here's a roundup of some great indie/small web newsletters this week. Most of these were delivered to my RSS reader.

Is there a good, real way to keep search engines from indexing your site? The whole "nobots" thing everyone sticks in their headers, does that actually work?

ReadBeanIceCream Slash Pages

I recently asked for some tips on improving my site. In doing so, I learned about slash pages.

Thanks to @shellsharks for the recommendation!

+1 journalism

Would love to see some of these move to Ghost, or Buttondown, or other systems that are independent of tech enshittifiers like Substack. I'd bet some already are, do you know of any?

"London Centric is one of perhaps a half-dozen Substacks [sic]—with names like London Spy, The Londoner, Capital Letter, The London Minute—that have sprung up, mostly in the past year or so." https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/letter-from-the-uk/london-is-a-local-news-desert-what-comes-next (also at https://archive.ph/e1u7d ) #London #journalism #IndieWeb

I’ve experimented with print styles on my site. My resume is a PDF printable version of a page on my site. I also love the idea of a printed book of my website. I think there are a few (mostly defunct) services for that listed on the IndieWeb wiki somewhere.

I've been thinking about adding printing support for my #blog posts. So I'm curious about this: do you print blog posts or save them as PDFs for offline #reading?
