        "text": "Deliberate use of entropy, randomness, even changing routines \ncan provide a layer of defense for cybersecurity.\n\nMore Steps for Cybersecurity\n\nHere are three more steps \n(in addition to \nThree Steps for IndieWeb Cybersecurity) \nthat you can take to add obstacles to any would be attackers, \nand further secure your online presence.\n\n\nDifferent email address for each account, \n  AKA email masking.\n  Use or create a different email alias for each service you sign-up for. \n  With a single email inbox, like any username at Gmail, \n  you can often append a plus sign (+) and a brief random string. \n  If you use your own \n  \n     #indieweb \n  domain for email addresses, pick a different name at that domain \n  for each service, with a bit of entropy like a short number.\n  Lastly, another option is to use an email masking service \n  \u2014 try a web search for that phrase for options to check out.\n  Each of these works to limit or at least slow down an attacker, \n  because even if they gain control of one email alias or account, \n  any \u201cforgot password\u201d (AKA password reset or account reset, \n  or sometimes called recovery) \n  attempts with that same email on other services won\u2019t work, \n  since each service only knows about an email address unique to it.\n\n\nDifferent password for each account. \n  This is a well known security technique against \n  credential stuffing attacks. \n  I.e. if someone retrieves your username and password \n  from a data breach, \n  or guesses them, \n  or tricks (phishes) \n  you into entering them for one service, \n  they may try to \u201cstuff\u201d those \u201ccredentials\u201d into other services. \n  Using different passwords for all online services you use \n  can thwart that attack. \n  Note however that different passwords with the same email address \n  will not stop an account reset attack, \n  which is why this tip is second to email masking.\n\n\nUse a password manager to autofill. \n  All modern browsers and many operating systems have built-in \n  password managers,  \n  most of which also offer free sync services across devices.\n  There is also third party password manager software and \n  third party password manager services which are designed to \n  work across devices, browsers, and operating systems.\n  Regardless of which option you choose, \n  always using a password manager to autofill \n  your login username (or email) and password can be a \n  very effective method of reducing the chances of being phished.\n  Password managers will not autofill forms on fake phishing domains \n  that are pretending to be a legitimate service.\n  Password managers can also help with keeping track of unique email addresses \n  and passwords for each service. \n  Most will also auto-generate long and random (high entropy) passwords for you.\n\n\nI\u2019ll close with a reminder that \nPerfect \n is the enemy of good. \nThis post has been a draft for a while so I decided to publish it as a summary, \nrather than continuing to iterate on it. I\u2019m sure others have written much longer posts. \nSimilarly, even if you cannot take all these actions immediately everywhere, \nyou can benefit by incrementally taking some of these steps \non some accounts.         "html": "<p>\nDeliberate use of entropy, randomness, even changing routines \ncan provide a layer of defense for cybersecurity.\n</p>\n<h2>More Steps for Cybersecurity</h2>\n<p>\nHere are three more steps \n(in addition to \n<a href=\"https://tantek.com/2025/052/b1/steps-indieweb-cybersecurity\">Three Steps for IndieWeb Cybersecurity</a>) \nthat you can take to add obstacles to any would be attackers, \nand further secure your online presence.\n</p>\n<ol><li>\n<b>Different email address for each account</b>, \n  <abbr title=\"also known as\">AKA</abbr> <i>email masking</i>.\n  Use or create a different email alias for each service you sign-up for. \n  With a single email inbox, like any username at Gmail, \n  you can often append a plus sign (+) and a brief random string. \n  If you use your own \n  <a href=\"https://indieweb.social/tags/indieweb\">\n     #<span class=\"p-category\">indieweb</span></a> \n  domain for email addresses, pick a different name at that domain \n  for each service, with a bit of entropy like a short number.\n  Lastly, another option is to use an <em>email masking service</em> \n  \u2014 try a web search for that phrase for options to check out.\n  Each of these works to limit or at least slow down an attacker, \n  because even if they gain control of one email alias or account, \n  any \u201cforgot password\u201d (AKA <i>password reset</i> or <i>account reset</i>, \n  or sometimes called <i>recovery</i>) \n  attempts with that same email on other services won\u2019t work, \n  since each service only knows about an email address unique to it.\n</li>\n<li>\n<b>Different password for each account.</b> \n  This is a well known security technique against \n  <i>credential stuffing</i> attacks. \n  I.e. if someone retrieves your username and password \n  from a <i>data breach</i>, \n  or guesses them, \n  or tricks (<i>phishes</i>) \n  you into entering them for one service, \n  they may try to \u201cstuff\u201d those \u201ccredentials\u201d into other services. \n  Using different passwords for all online services you use \n  can thwart that attack. \n  Note however that different passwords with the same email address \n  will <em>not</em> stop an account reset attack, \n  which is why this tip is second to email masking.\n</li>\n<li>\n<b>Use a password manager to autofill.</b> \n  All modern browsers and many operating systems have built-in \n  <i>password managers</i>,  \n  most of which also offer free sync services across devices.\n  There is also third party password manager software and \n  third party password manager services which are designed to \n  work across devices, browsers, and operating systems.\n  Regardless of which option you choose, \n  always using a password manager to autofill \n  your login username (or email) and password can be a \n  very effective method of reducing the chances of being <i>phished</i>.\n  Password managers will not autofill forms on fake phishing domains \n  that are pretending to be a legitimate service.\n  Password managers can also help with keeping track of unique email addresses \n  and passwords for each service. \n  Most will also auto-generate long and random (high entropy) passwords for you.\n</li>\n</ol><p>\nI\u2019ll close with a reminder that \n<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_is_the_enemy_of_good\">Perfect \n is the enemy of good</a>. \nThis post has been a draft for a while so I decided to publish it as a summary, \nrather than continuing to iterate on it.
