I figure it's time to write a new updated intro, now that I understand better how I'm using Mastodon. </p><p>I'm a programmer by trade who still loves tech despite the best efforts of the tech industry. As a result I gravitate towards the <a href=\"https://tech.lgbt/tags/IndieWeb\">#<span>IndieWeb</span></a>; I keep my own self-hosted blog (which is also in need of an update <img alt=\":blobcatsweat:\" height=\"16\" src=\"https://files.mastodon.social/cache/custom_emojis/images/000/242/279/original/2a264f98513452cd.png\" title=\":blobcatsweat:\" width=\"16\" /> ).</p><p>Regarding the tech industry, I seem to have found myself quite the <a href=\"https://tech.lgbt/tags/Luddite\">#<span>Luddite</span></a>. Namely, I get quickly frustrated when I try to pair-program with an unreliable machine, and I resent just how much GenAI has affected artists of all kinds. Plus, the Internet is now full of slop, thanks to Sam Altman inventing a new kind of stupid. </p><p>I fight quite passionately for <a href=\"https://tech.lgbt/tags/WorkersRights\">#<span>WorkersRights</span></a> and <a href=\"https://tech.lgbt/tags/TransRights\">#<span>TransRights</span></a>.         "text": "I re-watched Tomorrowland for the IndieWeb Movie Club May selection chosen by Tantek. I think I initially watched it around 2016, also on his recommendation. I recalled it being visually captivating and OK overall, but unfortunately the story did not stick with me so I didn\u2019t remember much of it going into this re-watch.\n\nNo major spoilers below, only brief description of an establishing scene which I don\u2019t think spoils anything.\n\nI\u2019m still left with an \u201cIt\u2019s just OK\u201d feeling about it. The moral of the story is decent and hopefully inspiring to people: let\u2019s dream, imagine, and work towards a better future. But it also felt a bit cliche in the ways it sets up and communicates that. For example, early on there are scenes of Casey in high school being taught about wars, climate change, authoritarianism, and everything wrong with the world, all from cynical teachers who sound resigned to it as if nothing could be made better. Driving that point home, they persistently ignore her raised hand until finally she asks, \u201cCan we fix it?\u201d Sure, doomers exist, but every teacher? Maybe I\u2019m expecting too much from a family-friendly PG movie, but it seems like it could be communicated with more nuance.\n\nThe storytelling felt a bit clunky in the ways it jumped between action scenes and dialogue and I found the resolution a bit underwhelming.\n\nStill, Casey\u2019s optimism and adventurous spirit is welcomed. It is nice to see a teen girl character portrayed like her. I hope she is inspiring to young people.\n\nHere are some quotes I liked from the movie and other tidbits:\n\n\u201cCan it just be fun?\u201d \u2013 young Frank responding to a question of why make something\n\t\u201cWhat if there\u2019s nothing there? What if there\u2019s everything?!\u201d \u2013 young Casey referring to traveling in space\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s hard to have ideas and easy to give up.\u201d \u2013 Casey\n\tI love to try visiting links that are shown in movies to see if they have easter eggs or still work. Props to Disney for maintaining blastfromthepast-houston.com that\u2019s shown in this movie. There are no easter eggs, though; it just redirects to disney.com.\n\tThe end credits animation done by yU+co was lovely\nIndieWeb Movie Club is a monthly blog carnival where a different host suggests a movie, people watch it, and then write about it.
