💙 Flashback Friday #3 💙 – Geocities & Angelfire

Before social media took over, Geocities and Angelfire were where the internet’s real creativity happened. These free web hosting platforms let people build anything they wanted—from personal diaries to deep-dive fan shrines to completely bizarre conspiracy hubs. It was the raw, unfiltered internet, and it was glorious.

These sites weren’t polished, but that was the charm. Backgrounds were painfully bright, GIFs were everywhere, and you’d often be greeted with a “WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE!!!” in giant, flashing Comic Sans. And honestly? That was way more interesting than the sanitized, templated internet we have today.

Geocities shut down in 2009, and Angelfire still exists but is barely recognizable. Yet, in many ways, the Sovereign Web and similar movement are bringing back what these sites stood for—a web that is personal, creative, and fully owned by its users.

👉 Did you ever make a Geocities or Angelfire site? If you could bring back one thing from that era, what would it be? Is there anything stopping you from creating a personal website simply for the fun of it? Let us know!

💙 Flashback Friday #1 💙 | Myspace

Myspace wasn’t just a social network; it was a digital expression of who you were. We spent hours tweaking HTML and CSS to perfect our profile layouts, adding glitter text, custom cursors, and autoplaying songs that set the mood. Your Top 8 friends were a serious status symbol (and possibly a source of drama). And let’s not forget the bulletin posts—those chain surveys that gave us a glimpse into everyone’s most random thoughts.

It was messy, loud, and personal in a way today’s social platforms aren’t. There were no algorithms deciding what you should see—your profile was your own space. Now, Myspace is a ghost of what it once was, trying (and failing) to be a music discovery platform. But honestly, nothing will ever compare to the golden era of profile songs and the thrill of getting a friend request from Tom.

👉 Did you have a Myspace? What was your go-to profile song? And do you miss having that much control over your online presence? What are some of your core memories that you loved about the Myspace era that you’d like to see brought back into mainstream social media? Let us know!

"A Dream for the Web" was shared today in the #powRSS feed.

"I dream of a web that’s small and strange and wonderful. Where personal websites grow like gardens – each one unique, crafted by hand, reflecting the beautiful weirdness of its creator. Where the web feels big because it’s made of small, individual voices."

Hello Mathstodon.

Any recommendations for RSS feeds when dealing with KATEX?

What do you do?

Stick with dollar signs in the post?

Make them into images?

Put a note at the top?

Other?

@reillypascal brought this up in Indie Web Camp's Homebrew today.

Probando el tema https://sr.ht/~bacardi55/MinIndie/ con las modificaciones que ha hecho @bacardi55 para su sitio web, y me está gustando como queda :-) #blog #indieweb #hugo
