WML, WAP & Microformats - had a bit of fun playing with some retro-markup which commemorates a brief window where it seemed like an alternate syntax for markup would be how we'd look at pages on our phones -- and also 20 years of microformats
https://lab.artlung.com/wml/faux #IndieWeb #retrocomputing

Was thinking I should maybe distinguish between actual notes and replies. The way I used to, before I moved to WordPress and a block theme some two or three years ago. Have my notes section again look more like, you know, Mastodon.

Maybe I should move my “bookmarks” into a section of their own, too. Create my own little Delicious clone.

I initially decided against “explicit post types” because, well, post types, as far as “social readers” are concerned, are anyway implied by posts’ microformats. (Technically, an article, note, like or listen on this site, regardless of its URL, could be … anything.)

But … I already decided most people probably don’t care about my “listens” or “likes” … and moved them into a corner of their own. So why stop there?

Speaking of microformats, half my bookmarks should probably quotations instead—but then again, who’s keeping score?

Speaking of microformats, I recently learned about implied properties. Like, here’s me carefully, or so I thought, marking up a reply context, only for microformats parsers to, well, assume things.

So, yeah, despite me working on things like automatically adding microformats to just about any modern WordPress theme, and having a thing for semantic markup in general, I’m not entirely sure they’re it. My money’s on ActivityPub.

💙 Flashback Friday #12 💙 – My Coke Studios

My Coke Studios was Coca-Cola’s surprisingly stylish venture into the world of virtual social platforms—a digital lounge that mixed brand marketing with early-2000s internet culture in a way that felt oddly ahead of its time. Unlike other virtual worlds of the era, which often leaned into pixelated chaos or fantasy aesthetics, My Coke Studios embraced a sleek, modern vibe. Players entered a polished digital space that looked more like a trendy nightclub than a cartoon playground. With smooth animations, glowing lights, and minimalist design, it stood out immediately as something different—especially for a project backed by a soda company.

The heart of My Coke Studios was social interaction, but with a twist: music was the core theme. Users could attend virtual concerts, hang out in music lounges, and engage with live-streamed content—all within their own customizable rooms. Branded furniture and exclusive Coke-themed items added a collector’s edge, giving players something to show off in their spaces. Much like Habbo Hotel or IMVU, there were elements of self-expression and status, but My Coke Studios had a more refined, futuristic touch. It wasn’t trying to be everything—it was trying to be cool. And, for a brief moment, it was.

What made My Coke Studios particularly interesting was how seamlessly it merged entertainment and branding without feeling overly commercial. Yes, everything was Coke-branded, from the furniture to the collectibles, but it didn’t feel forced. Instead, it was almost aspirational. The platform felt immersive, like a well-curated marketing campaign you actually wanted to be part of. Players weren’t just there for the freebies; they were there for the vibe, the music, and the social energy that made the space feel alive.

Unfortunately, like many experimental digital worlds of the 2000s, My Coke Studios was short-lived. The servers went quiet, the virtual lounges closed, and the sleek rooms faded into digital memory. But for those who experienced it, My Coke Studios remains a fascinating blip in internet history.

Did you ever hang out in My Coke Studios? What do you remember most about it? How do you think My Coke Studios compared to other virtual worlds like Habbo or IMVU? Do you still have screenshots, memories, or stories from your time in the digital Coke lounge? Feel free to share them!

I will always give open source developers grace and leeway because most of the time, they are doing the best they can with what they have... like the rest of us.

ActivityPub in WordPress is great. But as per usual, using it blindly can bring you into legal trouble, especially regarding GDPR, if applicable to you. This is due to its nature that it loads data from remote servers. But that’s fixable, so let’s fix it.

I have augmented my ridiculous WML page with #microformats which are 20 years old this year. This WAP/WML/XML page may be the only one so-marked up. I am not encouraging anyone else to do so but I am not discouraging it either. Maybe I'll try to acquire an old Nokia. #IndieWeb https://lab.artlung.com/wml/

I've started a New Web Thing. New for me anyway - a collection of links (a #linkroll) to stuff I've found interesting!

Loads of other personal sites publish this kind of content, but I'm imitating one of my favourite sites (and not for the first time) with this: @shellsharks maintains Scrolls, a weekly wrap-up in a similar vein.

I've called mine scraps!

Hacking Weblog Again

I have a new hack/automation that pulls my Mastodon statuses, including any attached images, into posts on weblog.lol. Sort of the reverse of what EchoFeed does. I wanted a way to automatically save my “microposts” for posterity. Not sure whether this makes long term sense but I’m trying it out.

And here is a picture of some street tacos.
