Webcomic #97 is out now:

I have learned that AOL's Dial Up service is finally ending. I knew about the fact that it was still providing the service because I was researching about making my dial up section of the website viewable. AOL is indeed the very first time I've entered into the internet. It's been a long time.

For weeks I’ve been thinking about IndieWeb post types and a Casey Muratori video I watched recently and maybe I should work my website architecture towards “team fat posts.”
“I suspect that not everyone is interested in knowing all the gritty details of which posts I've liked and reposted. So where to go from there?”
Came across this while searching indieweb.org for some prior thinking on differentiating post types along the lines of content (articles, notes, etc.) and actions (likes, reads, watches, etc.). Desmond has some good thoughts here.
I have a humans.txt file on my site (https://reillyspitzfaden.com/humans.txt), and I wanted to get it to update the “modified” date only when I actually modify the file, not every time I update the site.
@benji suggested the Eleventy `Last Modified` variable (https://www.11ty.dev/docs/dates/) and that was helpful. One interesting thing about it is that I have to write `{{ page.date | date: "%Y-%m-%d" }}` instead of just the `date` variable itself. Now it works and it's super useful!

Notes from yesterday's FrESH are archived here. https://indieweb.org/events/2025-08-12-front-end-study-hall #IndieWeb #Webdev #CSS Thanks all who participated. Next one linked from https://events.indieweb.org/ (and if you have questions or comments feel free to reach out in any way you feel comfortable)
The indieweb (specifically Neocites and Nekoweb) was a fucking mistake. Script kiddies running the fuck around making the most cookie-cutter-ass webshits with the only differences being what brightly-colored, rapidly-flashing GIFs they put up. and if you call them out on it they scream and cry that you're stifling their creativity.

One week early, but I'm not going to touch the computer much next week, so here we go.
A short post to celebrate 7 consecutive years of my #personalwebsite.
Authors who inspired you – a writing and reply challenge/competition
I’d like to challenge you to write about the authors who inspired you. I’ll pick my top favourite answers at the end of the challenge, but I will honourable mention every reply.
How this works
Anyone can take part. There’s no charge at all (much like a dead battery). You can enter as many times as you wish. Write about all the authors you love.
You can join this challenge in one of three ways.
The last day of this challenge is the 30th of September. After that, I will collate all of your lovely replies and pick a “winner” or two.
If you have nowhere else to publish your entry, you can use our general chat forum.
If we get a large number of entries, I’ll write a roundup post of the entries so far. So get in sooner rather than later for the most attention.
How I pick a winner will be based on a mix of how much I enjoyed reading your writing as well as the number of comments, likes, shares, boosts, mentions, replies, and so forth.
Prompts about your author (all optional)
I look forward to reading your entries.

In this short post @mark_schmeiser explains what our mission is and why we started Sociabli in the first place:

Buying independence beyond platforms.
👇
"Relying on any single platform—no matter how writer-friendly—means ceding control over the stability of our audience. Our solution is not to abandon ship, nor to retreat into isolation, but to prepare. Preparation means taking agency to build an independent presence: A home for our words no algorithm can bury, a way to stay connected even if the digital tides turn."

Even though I hate the layout of this site, the annoying trend of making every word a heading, and even though I don’t like rings very much, this could be useful to someone though! I personally like directories more but check out Webring Studio - Modern Webrings for Indie Creators https://webringstudio.com/ #WebRing #WebRings #IndieWeb
If you don’t like reading, or can’t read, litterally, I have a podcast with narrations of my posts. The tip jar pays for narrators. I do not use AI for narrators. https://weirdwritings.pinecast.co/ #Podcast #Podcasts #Blogs #Audiobook #Audiobooks #Blog #IndieWeb
Currently indulging myself by reading about the enshittification of Substack lol.
It's sad, but predictable, how if you bring social media dynamics to a once-cosy platform of writers, things go to hell.
A well-known writer I follow who has 39k followers wrote about how things have drastically changed the last few months. Journalists, celebrities are now dominating the platform and small fry writers are no longer seen.
For me, I've seen an uptick of outrage content and reply guys and debate bros. It's sad how the moment one writes a narrative that the mob doesn't agree with, they pile on you.
This is the opposite of what Substack stood for in the past.
I will still use Substack, because I'm a practical person nor do I choose platforms based on its morality or ideals, but how it serves me. But it's sad because I remember how it was before the bigwigs tried to change it to the next Twitter.
However, this is a very good reminder for me to double, triple down on my website and remember NOT to "build a presence" and do more digital sharecropping than necessary on Substack.
Is there a #indiewebcarnival about #vim / #neovim?
Would you want to write about it ?

Yes
No
No, I use Emacs
No, I'm lost, and I use Vscode
It's late and I'm too tired to think of a comment about this. Uh, #email is cool, I guess.

I was reading Jack Baty’s blog the other day via RSS and saw his post, “25 years of blogging”. That was three years before I started on Blogger, in the pre-Google days. I had a website before bloggin
