Inspired by the #Indieweb and #Emacs carnivals, I wanted one about #Vim / #Neovim, and here it comes. It will start in September, so you have two weeks to think, and blog about it.

In the wake of the “GitHub CEO stepped down, no longer independent” news, I’m reminded that not enough people know about @Codeberg — free Git hosting run by a non-profit organization.

No tracking, no ads, no corporate buyout risk. Just open-source, community-driven software hosting.

Give it a try → https://codeberg.org

Today on NovaLandia, I have a few things I want to say about this apparent growing movement of mobile-hostile "webdevs" in the indie/oldweb scene

I built floppytop to prove the data on my site is being served from a floppy, in the early stages, more to come.

I have learned that AOL's Dial Up service is finally ending. I knew about the fact that it was still providing the service because I was researching about making my dial up section of the website viewable. AOL is indeed the very first time I've entered into the internet. It's been a long time.

For weeks I’ve been thinking about IndieWeb post types and a Casey Muratori video I watched recently and maybe I should work my website architecture towards “team fat posts.”

“I suspect that not everyone is interested in knowing all the gritty details of which posts I've liked and reposted. So where to go from there?”

Came across this while searching indieweb.org for some prior thinking on differentiating post types along the lines of content (articles, notes, etc.) and actions (likes, reads, watches, etc.). Desmond has some good thoughts here.

I have a humans.txt file on my site (https://reillyspitzfaden.com/humans.txt), and I wanted to get it to update the “modified” date only when I actually modify the file, not every time I update the site.

@benji suggested the Eleventy `Last Modified` variable (https://www.11ty.dev/docs/dates/) and that was helpful. One interesting thing about it is that I have to write `{{ page.date | date: "%Y-%m-%d" }}` instead of just the `date` variable itself. Now it works and it's super useful!

Notes from yesterday's FrESH are archived here. https://indieweb.org/events/2025-08-12-front-end-study-hall #IndieWeb #Webdev #CSS Thanks all who participated. Next one linked from https://events.indieweb.org/ (and if you have questions or comments feel free to reach out in any way you feel comfortable)

The indieweb (specifically Neocites and Nekoweb) was a fucking mistake. Script kiddies running the fuck around making the most cookie-cutter-ass webshits with the only differences being what brightly-colored, rapidly-flashing GIFs they put up. and if you call them out on it they scream and cry that you're stifling their creativity.

One week early, but I'm not going to touch the computer much next week, so here we go.

A short post to celebrate 7 consecutive years of my #personalwebsite.

Authors who inspired you – a writing and reply challenge/competition

I’d like to challenge you to write about the authors who inspired you. I’ll pick my top favourite answers at the end of the challenge, but I will honourable mention every reply.

How this works

Anyone can take part. There’s no charge at all (much like a dead battery). You can enter as many times as you wish. Write about all the authors you love.

You can join this challenge in one of three ways.

  1. You can post a reply right here. But you want to own your own content, right?
  2. You can answer with a blog post or web page (or even a forum post) of your own. Just link to this page and put the URL in the ping form at the bottom (unless you have automagical WebMention pings set up).
  3. You can also reply via any ActivityPub blog or social media (Mastodon, for example).

The last day of this challenge is the 30th of September. After that, I will collate all of your lovely replies and pick a “winner” or two.

If you have nowhere else to publish your entry, you can use our general chat forum.

If we get a large number of entries, I’ll write a roundup post of the entries so far. So get in sooner rather than later for the most attention.

How I pick a winner will be based on a mix of how much I enjoyed reading your writing as well as the number of comments, likes, shares, boosts, mentions, replies, and so forth.

Prompts about your author (all optional)

  • When did you first discover your author?
  • What book from your author did you read first?
  • Where did you read this book?
  • How was that first reading?
  • What about this author inspires you?
  • Why did you first pick up a book by your author?
  • What do you admire about them?
  • What’s a perfect quote from your author?
  • Which book by your author should new readers try first?

I look forward to reading your entries.
