It's actually pretty fun... when you know what you're doing or what you want to do at least. Every day I've been spending a little bit of time after work hacking away at it. It's been a nice distraction from work and doom-scrolling just playing around with CSS &amp; HTML again.         "html": "<p>Sometimes I miss <a href=\"https://cybercultural.com/p/internet-1998/\">the old days of the web</a> when I\u2019d randomly stumble across cool, fun, and sometimes useful sites. And that just so happens to be what I was feeling earlier this year when I stumbled across <a href=\"https://home.omg.lol\">OMG.lol</a>, a cool, fun, and useful IndieWeb playground that also happens to remind me of the old days of the web.</p><p>It\u2019s built and maintained by just <a href=\"https://adam.omg.lol\">Adam</a> and <a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/staff\">a handful of diverse volunteers</a>. Every single tool that OMG.lol provides is there because he wants it to exist, not because he\u2019s looking to get rich at just $20/year. He\u2019s always available, supportive, building or improving something, and standing up to bigots.</p><p>There is quite a lot provided, and I don\u2019t even use it all, so here\u2019s a small breakdown of what I do use:</p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https://social.lol/about\">Social.lol</a></strong>: One of the reasons that I ran into OMG.lol is that I wanted to move to a paid <a href=\"https://joinmastodon.org\">Mastodon</a> server, after having fled a few that felt under-supported and/or under-moderated. Social.lol is neither. It\u2019s a social safe space on the web, and <a href=\"https://social.lol/@macmanx\">I\u2019m very happy there</a>.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://some.pics\">Some.pics</a></strong>: I stopped posting to Instagram a year ago, but folks still wanted to see my photos, and both my Mastodon and <a href=\"https://macmanx.tumblr.com\">Tumblr</a> presences are a bit noisy for that. With some.pics, I can share <a href=\"https://macmanx.some.pics\">my photos</a> and provide <a href=\"https://macmanx.some.pics/rss\">an RSS feed</a> that\u2019s just my photos (which I also cross-post to Mastodon with <a href=\"https://echofeed.app\">EchoFeed</a>). It reminds me of early photo sharing sites.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://status.lol\">Status.lol</a></strong>: This reminds me of early microblogging. <a href=\"https://macmanx.status.lol\">I just pick an emoji and share short text</a>, and folks can follow <a href=\"https://macmanx.status.lol/feed/rss\">with RSS</a> or see my cross-posts on Mastodon.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/info/profiles\">Profile Pages</a></strong>: The profile page is clean and simple. <a href=\"https://macmanx.omg.lol\">Mine</a> just has my avatar, some words, links with icons, and latest status and photo.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://url.town\">URL.town</a></strong>: Speaking of that old web feel, this is right out of the old days of web directories. Before search engines existed, we had searchable link directories that folks managed. Some even got pretty big, like <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo\">Yahoo!</a> URL.town is a searchable link directory that any OMG.lol member can add to, and <a href=\"https://url.town/@macmanx\">I\u2019ve been pretty busy</a>.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/info/community\">The Community</a></strong>: There\u2019s a vibrant and supportive <a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/info/irc\">IRC community</a> (yes, <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC\">IRC</a>), where folks not only chat about a variety of things, but also watch and sometimes even help Adam work. There\u2019s also <a href=\"https://discourse.lol\">a Discourse forum</a>.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/info/purls\">PURLs</a></strong>: It\u2019s a URL redirecting (and I suppose shortening, depending on the original link) service. I have quite a few of these set up. Changing the 1 redirect link\u2019s destination is easier than changing a bunch of links in a bunch of places.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://paste.lol\">Paste.lol</a></strong>: There\u2019s even a pastebin service! I haven\u2019t made much public use of it yet, but I have used it to quickly share code from time to time.</li></ul><p>Those are just the things I use. There\u2019s actually so much more, from <a href=\"https://weblog.lol\">a whole blogging platform</a> to <a href=\"https://terminal.land\">sort of a text adventure game</a>.</p><p>I would be remiss if I didn\u2019t close by mentioning the generosity of the community. <a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/giving\">Back in May</a>, a generous community member offered to match most donations, which resulted in the community donating a total of $19,540.54 to causes we cared about. And, <a href=\"https://tiltify.com/@rknightuk/stjude2025\">until the end of September</a>, Adam is donating half of everything OMG.lol makes (not just half of the profits) to another community member\u2019s fundraiser for <a href=\"https://www.stjude.org\">St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital</a>, which has so far raised over $12,000. While I\u2019m not optimistic that this will be on Mastodon\u2019s radar soon, I think it\u2019s worth continuing to push for.</em></p>\n<p>Hi Johannes and everyone,</p>\n<p>This has been a good discussion, and I wasn\u2019t going to chime in, but I feel that someone should make the case for eventually standardizing on simple domains and subdomains for handles. I bring this up because it could influence what the answer to Johannes\u2019s question is.</p>\n<p>Right now, the clear convention is Mastodon / WebFinger-style handles:</p>\n<p><code>@manton@example.com</code></p>\n<p>There are two problems with this: it looks like an email address, even with the \u201c@\u201d prefix, and it implies identity is usually tied to a server that someone else is running. There is no natural progression for solo instances in the way there is with subdomain \u2192 domain name .</p>\n<p>I would love to see a gradual transition to:</p>\n<p><code>@manton.example.com</code></p>\n<p>And simply:</p>\n<p><code>@manton.org</code></p>\n<p>This is obviously a big change and won\u2019t happen soon, but I think it\u2019s worth working toward. There have been proposals to map it in a compatible way with existing software too, e.g. special names with an underscore like <code>?resource=acct:_@manton.example.com</code>.
